  1. I'll be playing trio at Ortlieb's this Wednesday, November 12. 8:00p - 12:00a. Hope some of the Philly contingent can drop by.
  2. Here's a link to thumbnails of about 100 pics taken at the Hermes reception: http://www.patrickmcmullen.com/website/pmc...?event_id=12983
  3. I attended the gallery opening reception at Hermes last night. Barry Harris had a trio with Ray Drummond and Leroy Williams. Ira Gitler and Gary Giddins were there but I didn't see any other musicians. The original polaroids were framed and there were several pictures that didn't make it into the book including one of Cecil Taylor. It was quite a spiffy affair - champagne, fois gras, caviar.... Nica kept all her notes in an Hermes leather-bound book. It also helped that some Hermes directors are jazz fans.
  4. I think the 1953 Birdland broadcasts contain some of the best Bud ever recorded. Certainly the most harmonically advanced - check out the intro, coda and head of My Heart Stood Still!

Do you remember what he said? IIRC it was pretty callous.
  6. Thanks for the well-wishes Valerie. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of enthusiasm Berklee students have for this music.
  7. I'd be happy to come down to FSU.
  8. On Monday I'll be presenting a masterclass at Berklee on Wayne Shorter's compositions from "High Life." It's free and open to the public. Details here.
  9. At the Angry Squire gig he could barely get enough air into the horn to play it. Of course there was a piano player. I think it might have been Duke Jordan. I don't think Hank played any original tunes. I believe it was Lodi Carr's gig.
  10. Surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this book here. A definite "must have." Today's NYTimes did a big piece on it. There will be a photo exhibit at the Gallery at Hermes on Madison Ave. beginning October 30.
  11. Miles at Paul's Mall, Boston, August 1974.
  12. I bought a mint copy of that LP, still in its shrinkwrap, for 20 cents last week, at the Music Exchange liquidation sale in Kansas City. It was in a box with showtunes and Christmas records--such is the nature of this liquidation sale. I'll give you a quarter for it.
  13. I found Chris Albertson in my filing cabinet.
  14. Sorry about that. I moved the photos around in photobucket.com and it messed with the links.

  18. At least as strange as Milton Berle introducing Ornette Coleman on Saturday Night Live. Remember that?
  19. Given all that the Masterlink can do, I'm sure it's worth the $$. I was just looking for an inexpensive way to get my aging reel-to-reels and cassettes to disc and replace my dead Adcom CD player simultaneously. I went ahead with the Teac. Just hope it lasts at least as long as the Adcom did.
  20. I'm very happy for you and your machine which costs four times the one I'm looking at.
  21. I don't imagine anyone else here is just arriving at this situation in late 2008, but.... Anyone familiar with the Teac CD-RW880? It's only $200. As an alternative, I'd get a USB Audio Input Interface from AltoEdge (for Mac) but my CD player is shot so I need a new one anyway. Got lots of reel to reels and cassettes to convert. Thanks for any input.
  22. CELEBRATING JOHNNY GRIFFIN A TRIBUTE IN WORDS AND MUSIC Reminiscences from fellow musicians, family and friends Johnny Griffin's compositions performed by Johnny's longtime rhythm section (Michael Weiss, John Webber and Kenny Washington) with Eric Alexander. Additional performances by Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton, Ray Drummond and Ben Riley. SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 7 p.m. St. Peter's Church 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street New York, NY
  23. Just saw Ocean's Eleven on TV last night. Who's playing in Red Norvo's band? Looked a little like Al Cohn, (Jerry Dodgion??) playing alto. Jimmy Wyble on guitar.
