  1. Announced at the Vanguard tonight - Eddie past away over the weekend. A beautiful cat who was an important and treasured presence in the NY jazz community for a very long time. Will be sorely missed by many.
  2. The tune titles include George Russell. Can anyone post complete personnel?
  3. Meditations - just Trane. Interested in his transposing sequences. His sound got so big the last couple of years - it really changed.
  4. Nice oboe solo.
  5. Can anyone recommend a BBQ restaurant... 1. between Dallas and Waco? 2. In Waco? 3. San Marcos? 4. Between Austin and Dallas?
  6. Unless she has a dressing room on wheels parked in front of the club, this may be the first time she had a dressing room like the Vanguard's kitchen since she first played there. I can't wait to hear about it the following Monday.
  7. Pretty much what hit me from note one...Johnny Griffin was a NATURAL man! All his life. Always liked to have a good time. Even in his Dusable yearbook he's got that devilish grin.
  8. Thanks for the interest but unfortunately, my activity in Austin is just clinics. A worthwhile performance opportunity hasn't materialized so far.
  9. I'm blowing in for a few clinics and concerts in October - 12-13 Baylor U., Waco 14 Texas State U., San Marcos 15 Austin
  10. Scacciadiavoli 2004 Sagrantino di Montefalco @Chambers Street Wines
  11. That's what I'm talking about. I went to Del Posto last year - nice experience. When I was in Assisi with the Vanguard band last week, I had a chance to try several different Sagrantinos (as Montefalco is so close by), as well as some aged grappas di Barolo, at a great wine bar, all the while listening to Blue Note compilation CDs and Miles videos!
  12. Someone sent me a link with a podcast of our set at NorthSea: http://cgi.omroep.nl/cgi-bin/streams?/radi.../maandag-22.wma Keep in mind you have to wait for a while for it to load, but it will.
  13. Hi Durium, Thanks for your corrections. But while you're at it you might as well correct the spelling of my name - WEISS - with two S. I thoroughly enjoyed Cecil's performance. I was there from beginning to end as well as backstage with Cecil before the set and for the rest of the evening afterwards. It was a spectacular set and as you pointed out, Cecil maintains a high degree of concentration, totally unruffled by the comings and goings of the audience, as is typical at Northsea. I find Cecil's music very accessible - melodically, harmonically, rhythmically, dynamically, and with great variety of orchestration as well. I think the audience that stayed through the performance was equally impressed. I just wish more jazz musicians would be currently informed about his music. instead of relying on old memories of old records. Attending a concert like the one at NorthSea would really turn some heads around.
  14. Durium, I read your review of the VJO's concert on your website. Gary Smulyan soloed on our last selection of the evening, My Centennial (Thad). Contrary to your report, we never played the tunes "Stella By Starlight," "Lady Luck," "Round Midnight" or "Blue Minor." These were selections were performed by Hank Jones' trio, who followed us on the same stage. So I guess you left in the middle of our set and then came back. As you pointed out, there is great diversity among the groups presented by North Sea. But it does little justice to either the VJO or Cecil Taylor to characterize our respective music with the word "versus" in between. Not only are there are more commonalities than you give us credit for, but there is no competition involved.
  15. Rented "Blues in the Night" from Netflix. Included in the DVD were "Jammin' the Blues" and a 1936 Lunceford short I never saw before, "Jimmie Lunceford and his Dance Orchestra." Earl Carruthers and Joe Thomas do some amazing steps too. Great to see film of this great band.
  16. That piano ended up at the Jazz Gallery.
  17. A must for any Tyrone Washington fan:
  18. We paid tribute playing a little "Rock With You" last night at Smalls.
  19. Michael Weiss - piano, compositions Dick Oatts - alto, soprano David Wong - bass Justin Brown - drums Smalls 183 West 10th Street NYC Friday & Saturday June 26 & 27 10:30 & 12:00 Don't think I'll be opting for the live video podcast so you'll just have to come in person.
  20. Anyone have a recording date for this?
  21. Art Farmer Junior Cook Bill Hardman Pepper Adams Red Garland How about another thread titled Good Composers Under the Radar
