    Leon Spencer

Little bit of trivia: Leon is Lou Donaldson's godson
  2. Two tracks on High Blues Pressure contain IMO Freddie's most adventurous compositions: "For B.P." and "True Colors."
  3. A legitimate concern, but all I can tell you is Cedar called me early this morning with the news.
  4. Early this morning.
  5. Jackie McLean - Tenor - A Long Drink of the Blues Charles McPherson - Tenor - Bulls Eye (Barry Harris) Johnny Griffin - Alto and Baritone - Blue Stroll (Ira Sullivan) Roland Alexander - Piano - High Step(Coltrane /Paul Chambers Transition date)
  6. Dennis Irwin
  7. "All Night Long" was just on TMC recently. Had never seen this before. What some drummers will do just to get a gig!
  8. I used to play this a lot Fire Eater Prestige 10014 Idris Muhammed, Wilbert Longmire and Leon Spencer
  9. Sweet cat. I used to play with him at the Get Me High Lounge when I was in town with Griff.
  10. This is the first time I played and soloed on a CD that was nominated. Category 86 - Best Instrumental Arrangement "St. Louis Blues" (Brookmeyer) Category 49 - Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album "Monday Night Live at the Village Vanguard" (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra)
  11. What the hell?!?!? Screech trumpet??? This is bizarre in the truest sense of the word. Haven't heard this track, but while Brisbois could play "insanely high," he did not (in my experience) screech. I've always assumed "screech trumpet" is commonly used term for ....insanely high trumpet playing.

  13. I'd love to hear this, out of morbid curiosity. My sentiments exactly.
  14. NPR: JazzSet with DeeDee Bridgewater, November 20, 2008 Also from NPR, "Johnny Griffin: In Memoriam"
  15. Wow. Lot o' shit here! Or as Danny Moore used to say, "That's some hellova shiat."
  16. So Templejazz, after all your comments, where were you last Wednesday?
  17. They were joined at the hip! I know that he used to. A regular I met there said he doesn't come out so often anymore. Unfortunately, to my surprise, it wasn't advertised. The gig was part of a masterclass I gave earlier in the day at Temple University's jazz department, who have their own weekly night at the club. So it was mostly students and a few regulars in the house.
  18. Thanks for asking. Aside from a piano that needs lots of work, it was very enjoyable. The rhythm section was really first rate: bassist Madison Rast and drummer Dan Monaghan. Not only did they learn my music, but they played their ass off too.
  19. Heard Cecil Taylor at the Vanguard last night, sounding no less inspired than his engagement there last July. Pound for pound (or note for note - every one of them intentional and precisely executed), I don't think there's another pianist out there today who individually delivers that much music in 60 minutes.
  20. I'll be playing trio at Ortlieb's this Wednesday, November 12. 8:00p - 12:00a. Hope some of the Philly contingent can drop by.
  21. Here's a link to thumbnails of about 100 pics taken at the Hermes reception: http://www.patrickmcmullen.com/website/pmc...?event_id=12983
  22. I attended the gallery opening reception at Hermes last night. Barry Harris had a trio with Ray Drummond and Leroy Williams. Ira Gitler and Gary Giddins were there but I didn't see any other musicians. The original polaroids were framed and there were several pictures that didn't make it into the book including one of Cecil Taylor. It was quite a spiffy affair - champagne, fois gras, caviar.... Nica kept all her notes in an Hermes leather-bound book. It also helped that some Hermes directors are jazz fans.
  23. I think the 1953 Birdland broadcasts contain some of the best Bud ever recorded. Certainly the most harmonically advanced - check out the intro, coda and head of My Heart Stood Still!
