  1. What a bizarre find. The music's pretty damn good, especially from the pen of a seventeen year old. What happened to him? "Torah Jazz" - who woulda thought?
  2. Yo! What am I, chopped liver?
  3. Just a bump for this weekend...
  4. Tom Harrell Quintet last night at the Vanguard. Wayne Escoffrey - tenor Danny Grissett - piano Ugonna Okegwo - bass Jonathan Blake - drums One of the best working bands out here. Aside from an excellent set of original tunes and a couple of others (KD's "Straight Ahead" and "Body and Soul"), the solos, accompaniment, group dynamic and creativity was all of the highest quality. Totally stimulating from the first note to the last – a rare thing these days!
  5. I know to you ornithologists this is like saying "Ever heard of a trumpeter named Miles Davis?" but a few weeks ago, I thought that damn mockingbird was back again to keep us awake until the next frost, but discovered this time it's a cardinal. He doesn't carry on all night like the mockingbird did, but he gets started around 4:30am. Has quite a range of calls, clucks and such.
  6. I'm looking at it now, & I'm guessing Ann Arbor, for no reason other than just because. I'm guessing Germantown, vicinity of Morton Street.
  7. The photos on that Shandar LP volume 2 were taken at the Fondation Maeght. Fabulous place, worth a trip! Photos on volume 1 also taken there! That's what I thought. I knew you would know, Brownie. Looks like a big tent.. Now if only someone could tell me where that outdoor concert is on the Magic City LP....
  8. I haven't found any of these liner photos from the Impulse and Shandar LPs online. Sorry.
  9. Trivia question Please identify the locations of these Sun Ra LP photos: #1 BYG - Solar Myth Approach Vol. 2 Shandar - Nuits de la Fonadation Maeght Vol. 2 photos by Jacques Bisceglia Is it from the Fondation Maeght? #2 Impulse - The Magic City Impulse - The Nubians of Plutonia photos by Francis Ing thanks
  10. Martyjazz used to live down the hall. Sidestep into subtopic - "musicians as neighbors" At one time or another my neighborhood included Cecil Taylor, Lester Bowie, Bob Brookmeyer, Curtis Fuller and Billy Hart. Ronnie Mathews is still here and Cedar Walton too as is Matt Garrison.
  11. Ah so. Thank you!
  12. Is anyone familiar with a person who's nickname was "Face." I don't know if he was a musician or not.
  13. Well feel free to recommend us to your local jazz promoter, but we might not qualify as a beach bar band. Hope to see Detroit area Organissimo-board members this time around. There might even be a comp ticket or two available.
  14. TASHI performs Quartet For the End of Time this Sunday at Town Hall, free!!
  15. Music Hall's Jazz Café, May 23 and 24. Michael Weiss - piano, tunes Jon Gordon - alto, soprano Ugonna Okegwo - bass George Fludas - drums Daniel Sadownick - percussion 350 Madison at Brush Street Sets at 9:30PM and 11:30PM. $14 in advance, $19 at the door.
  16. If there's a pre-existing topic for this post feel free to move it. Here's Clark Terry sitting in with Wayne Shorter at Newport 1986 on "The Three Marias." De noive! Actually the results are interesting to say the least. http://www.musica2010.com/video/x1zfpQRt-h...artet-1986.html
  17. "Midnight in Carlotta's Hair" from the CD High Life
  18. So you were there for that week? Unfortunately it wasn't so much a two-tenor gig as it was two quartets with the same rhythm section (only paid for one, of course), but playing (the Joe Henderson Songbook) with Joe was great. We did a week at Yoshi's after Chicago.
  19. We played the Vanguard 1988-1992. But from 1993 through 1998 we were at the Blue Note. We didn't return to the Village Vanguard until 1999. Must have been late summer or early fall of '91 then... does that sound possible? September 24-29, 1991
  20. MartyJazz probably has the best ears of any non-musician I know. I remember him being able to identify several tunes without ever hearing the melody. Even Bird tunes.
  21. We played the Vanguard 1988-1992. But from 1993 through 1998 we were at the Blue Note. We didn't return to the Village Vanguard until 1999.
  22. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea Sorry to be a spoiler.
  23. An audience member was pestering Tommy to play "Chelsea Bridge." Flanagan finally replied, "Take a leap."
  24. One of my favorite pieces. Another one, often overlooked, is Trois Petites Liturgies. This is an incredible piece. I heartily recommend this recording:
