  1. Actually, they really aren't. The discs--and the booklet--in the Universal set (at least in mine) say "Mosaic" all over them, indicate they are made in the U.S., and appear in all ways to be Mosaic products (except that "Mosaic" does not appear on the outside of the box). It appears that ALL of these sets--Mosaic and Universal--were manufactured by Mosaic, and some portion of the 10,000 to be issued are merely being distributed by Universal. Also, all indications are that the Universal sets sold in the US are perfectly legal and are being distributed in conformity with any distribution agreement Mosaic has with Universal. And if they are not, Mosaic should say so. And I agree with Michael Fitzgerald that this is a manufacturer's (whoever that may be) problem.
  2. Nor mine (also purchased from Caiman), as I said above. But it's apparently on enough copies of this disc--purchased from Caiman and other merchants--that the company that produced/manufactured them should replace the defective discs, IMO.
  3. Aaaaaaaah, but Lonson my friend, always remember, it is better for stereo equipment to LOOK good than to sound good!
  4. Hmmm . . . based on aesthetics, only, I think I prefer the Victrola--unless you're into that 2001 Monolith kinda look:

  6. Finally got that Victrola to play your oldest 78's?
  7. I emailed Mosaic about the defect. Here is their response: We have checked the CD. The sound you are hearing is on the original source and [we] believe what you are hearing is brushwork. Regrads, Mosaic Records Perhaps you could email them back and attach this link to the defective sound (with rostasi's permission--he created the link). I'm sure whoever listened at Mosaic was listening to a disc without this defect--when I first tried to listen for it on my nondefective disc, I erroneously assumed those who heard it were just hearing the brush strokes and tape hiss. I still think that even though Mosaic didn't directly retail these Universal-distributed sets to consumers, they should replace the defective discs or, if they weren't responsible for manufacturing the discs, direct consumers to the appropriate contact number of whatever entity manufactured/produced/distributed the defective CD's. In the past, I've contacted Sony (which provides a quality assurance contact number in their CD's), Blue Note (Mosaic's "cousin"), and Fantasy about defective CD's, and they've always stepped up to the plate as manufacturer/producer and remedied the problem. ESPECIALLY with a large box set and a widespread manufacturing defect as apparently exists here, it's unreasonable to expect the retailers--whoever they may be--to remedy the problem.

  12. The whistling might be a bit easier if you try "H-A-Double R-I-G-A-N spells HARRIGAN." I think Cohan found that a bit easier, also.
  13. Well, FWIW, Hodges was known as Jeep--and "The Jeep is Jumpin'" was written-- before the war. E.g., "Jeep's Blues" and "The Jeep is Jumpin'" were both recorded by "Johnny Hodges and his Orchestra" (an Ellington small group) in 1938.
  14. Err.. Johnny Hodges=Jeep. Not sure if your were kidding or not! . . . and of course, also Rabbit. Interestingly, I was listening to the Ella Fitzgerald Song Books the other day (as Lon knows), and in the midst of directions he gives on a rehearsal track in the Ellington Song Book, I'm pretty sure Duke calls Hodges "Rabbit." B-)
  15. Which reminds me: how many Aggies does it take to make a birthday cake? Sorry, but once they start flowing, it's hard to stop 'em!
  16. Happy Birthday, Mark! And as a fellow member, let me officially welcome you to Club 48! B-) (If you come to Philly this summer, I'll buy you a deferred birthday beer at a Phillies game. )
  17. After hours, I'm banished to a virtual basement:
  18. Turnout was less than for the Golson show. Maybe about 70 people. Substantially less.
  19. DAMN, I wish I'd been in town for that. How was the turnout, Alan--was it as good as for Golson?
  20. I can call them about it someday when I get a chance but didn't I read somewhere that these non-Mosaic Farlow sets are from Europe? If this is true and they are from Europe, then sure, they're technically illegal in the US because Mosaic holds the exclusive rights to sell this set here. BTW, Mosaic still makes money off those sets too. I think the only reason they are cheaper here in the US right now is because of the strong Euro. This scenario is nowhere near what's happening with these LA-area dealers. The European Farlow sets are legit, just not being sold where they're supposed to be sold. Not apples to apples. Kevin Thanks. I'd be curious to know what you find out. Incidentally, I bought one of these sets, and everything in it is marked as made in the US. I would have thought that, like other European issues of US titles/labels, it would have been much cheaper to produce these in Europe if they were intended exclusively for European distribution.
  21. Kevin, Do you know if there's a story behind the Universal-distributed Tal Farlow Mosaic sets being widely sold in the US for half--or less than half--of Mosaic's price? If there's anything improper about it, it seems to me that Mosaic would want to get that story out. Ron
  22. Didn't think you guys KNEW any simple tunes.
  23. I think you missed one.
  24. Bevo says: "Happy Birthday!" [and asks: "How many Aggies does it take to light a birthday candle?" ]
  25. You realize, or course, that this was the great cinematic breakthrough for Pia Zadora. [WHO??? ]
