  1. My mother would make the rounds to various Chicago supper clubs before and after I was born (she was pregnant with me while seeing Jamal at the Pershing). I have vague memories of seeing people like Ramsey Lewis, Quartette Trés Bien, either Jo Jones or Jonah Jones - I'm guessing Jo Jones because of my interest in drums, and others. I remember singers at Mister Kelley's and more adventurous music at the London House, but the one that I remember much more clearly is the December 22, 1965 Miles at the Plugged Nickel over on Wells. It was my mother's 40th birthday and I managed to spill a drink all over her that night. She used to tell me of another "show" where the next Miles tune that was announced was, "Miles and Miles and Miles of Miles" (don't know which date or club) and the band proceeded to play for what seemed like an eternity. She liked his music, but apparently it was a bit on the indulgent side that particular night (wherever it may have been).
  2. I didn't say all of them on each album - mostly, just the leaders.
  3. Dead people are taking up my listening time these days.
  4. Leo Cupers (1947 - 2017) LEO CUYPERS - piano WILLEM BREUKER - saxophone, B clarinet ARJEN GORTER - bass HAN BENNINK - drums, C soprano saxophone, trombone
  5. By a pretty amazing coincidence, a first-time staging of Tom Phillips' 1969 opera, Irma, will be performed on the 16th and 17th of this month at the South London Gallery. Some of you may know of the Obscure Records recording that was released back in '78 - which is interesting, but really more of an excerpted segment from a not yet fully fleshed out final opera.
  6. Holger Czukay (1938 - 2017) Random Radio for Radio Marfa Memorial
  7. Earl Lindo (1953 - 2017)
  8. Listening to a childhood friend that uses a set of madrigals that the (now) late John Ashbery wrote for this Salzman work while I sift through his spoken word recordings this morning.
  9. Halim El-Dabh (1921 - 2017)
  10. Good Sunday kinda feelin' with that gospel, soul and blues. Something different now. Reading some John Ashbery (because he has died today at the age of 90) while listening to the following. Tomorrow, I'll bring out audio recordings of Ashbery, himself, reading his work.
  11. Yeah, that kinda looks like him...
  12. New, and I think I've listened to this about 9 times already.
