  1. Even with all of those early albums when you could hear him with Gato and Johnny Hammond Smith and that Friends album and Lookout Farm and so on, it was still the Timeless album that really hit home in a beautiful way. I remember a few people coming up to me in high school - students and faculty - asking about *that* tune I played on the radio the night before. This was in a town that had a population of less that 5000. He had this beautiful lilting tone that was so completely - distinctively - alluring that even those who had no experience with jazz could come away feeling his sound footprint. Sonic impressions left by the best artists that make you want to seek out more are the real aural gifts that they can leave after they're gone.
  2. Loved Dick Gregory. Strong, moving force for many who would almost give up hope, then discovered and ran with the humor of "the situation." Robin Tyler is known as the first "out" lesbian comic and was a frequent performer in those days. I think she's still keeping women's and LGBT issues in the forefront of her activities. "If it wasn't for Abe Lincoln, I'd still be on the open market."
  3. "This is the full performance of Dancing In The Street on the 'Your All American College Show' by the Carpenters in 1968. Hear Richard confirming that no, it is not an organ 'It's an electric piano'... and check out that awesome drum work by 18 year old Karen... And if that isn't enough for ya... you get to see the trio (yes, the Dick Carpenter Trio, to be exact) win the top trophy and prize money handed out by none other than Zsa Zsa Gabor, and William Shatner!! This was the performance that caused Mr. John Wayne to think that Karen would be perfect for the female lead in his upcoming film 'True Grit'. Karen did read for the part but was beaten out by popular Kim Darby for the role." better quality, but shorter:
  4. The one thing to know about that box set is that it needs to be experienced like a 17 hour hörspiel - something that mixes interviews, commentaries and influences along with the actual Ra tracks, so it doesn't really represent only rare and nearly lost recordings of Ra in all cases. For example, I don't remember if Anderson makes the case that Ra is actually playing on the Tom Archia All-Stars sessions or if it's even his arrangements (I'll have to check the box and listen to the excerpts), but it might be easily assumed even tho it's pretty evident that it's the Chicago pianist Willie Jones playing - who influenced Ra (and Andrew Hill too).
  5. Michael Anderson is all over this fine box set:
