  1. I've thought about selling it someday, but the label on Side A of the first cassette was missing when I bought it new back in '87 and so that (and it being on cassettes) may make it hard to sell, so I keep it. (There is a guy on Discogs who's asking $480!)
  2. My car has a cassette player in addition to the 6-disc built-in changer. Soooo many cassettes here - some of which need to be transferred because the stuff is probably only on someone's reels at a radio station. I even have this on cassette:
  3. The first LP in the set is a collection of various pre-released pieces by Columbia, but the rest of the LPs were all newly released IIRC.
  4. That's the wonderful 5-LP set released in celebration of what would've been Ives' 100th birthday. I have other Ives recordings, but this has always had a special place in my collection since then.
  5. Talk of Ives has sent me back to this gem:
  6. As a twelve year old, the sonic colors of that album were a real joy to hear. The album wasn't very long, but it was played over and over at our house. The original cover had the text on the front.
  7. George Crumb's "Ancient Voices Of Children" on Nonesuch was a real favorite of mine as a youngster.
  8. Article honoring Monk's centenary.
  9. The PDF on the page at the link can be read without actually downloading it, but this may be dependent on your circumstances. (Un)popular music and young audiences: Exploring the classical chamber music concert from the perspective of young adult listeners. "This empirical study explores the responses of 40 young people to a chamber music concert, considering how their greater experience of popular music listening formed a frame of reference for their responses to live classical music. Using qualitative methods including the ‘Write-Draw’ technique to investigate the young people’s responses before, during and after the concert, we demonstrate how the emotional, responsive listening of popular music conflicted with the etiquette of the concert hall and the structures of classical music. Our study sheds new light on the continued decline of young audiences for classical concerts and presents a challenge to music education to equip young people for all kinds of live musical experience."
  10. "Has anyone ordered a set and did not receive it eventually? Has anyone ordered a set and received it more than one month delayed? If not, then is a bit of shaky communication that much of a big deal?" I have received all the sets I ordered, but I may possibly not have this last time if I had not opened two refund cases against them thru Paypal. Somehow, they did receive that email. As I said above, this was almost two months after my order and a few emails asking about my order(s). The product eventually showed up almost 11 weeks after I placed the order. Again, this was an isolated incident - maybe due to inattention on various people's parts and/or the sudden influx of orders. I will still order from them. I'll just be more aware of the possibilities of screw-ups. It's not a black and white issue. There's a place in California that I order from that takes its time getting product out - probably because it's run out of this woman's house and she may be her own sole employee. That means I anticipate at least a two to three week wait whenever I order from her and act accordingly.
  11. Since I mentioned a Mosaic delay earlier, I'll add my red nichols and five pennies to the discussion. I understand situations being tight when you might suddenly have an influx of orders, but not replying to an email when someone, at first, casually asks about the status of their order and then has to keep emailing because they're not getting replies is pretty unacceptable. The dialogue has to go on between customer and provider even if there's a snag. This is what I pointed out to the HVAC guy the other day when he originally stated that he'd be here at 1PM and when 3:15 (and he) arrived, he said that he'd had a busy day (and this was the owner of the company). Good for you! ... but TELL ME THAT in a phone call, etc. So, Scott W. stated that he never got the emails (that's a prob) and the order was already nearly two months late. So, communication and delivery problems both ... BUT, I could've accepted the delivery problem (within reason) if there was some kind of back-and-forth: "Oh, man! I'm really sorry! We are just swamped." or some-such communication, but *communication* is the key and when I don't get that, I get irritated. Same two month+ wait and communication problem with Strut Records too on an order that finally arrived today. Just wasn't my season these past few months, but, really, it RARELY happens - and I can't think of any other unfortunate buying events with Mosaic since the 80s. In other words, I'm not the kind of guy who runs to Yelp after one problem at a restaurant.

  15. Scanner - Nomadic Concrete "In the light of the recent death of composer Pierre Henry (9 December 1927 – 5 July 2017), I found out this live recording from Berlin in 2003 when I was invited to create a kind of live mixtape using my own materials combined with recordings of Henry. I processed, stretched, treated, and reworked original recordings and created this live fluid mix in the theatre. I once travelled with Henry across Belgium, to a tiny ancient chapel, where we played a concert together. He slept almost the entire car journey. At the show that evening he performed an elegant and engaging tape piece, and when I took the stage I was quite nervous, clearly keen to impress this legendary figure. As I looked up I saw him sitting there in the audience, contentedly deep asleep again. Let's hope he's sleeping happily wherever he is now too."
  16. Pierre Henry (1927 - 2017) It's going to be a Pierre Henry weekend here at home. He was the composer of my second favorite composition of all time.
