  2. No, it was the mention of the word "American" that caused jeers from the Leeds Marxists. How out of touch can you get in a jazz audience!
  3. In the 60s I saw the Polish Modern Jazz Quartet (alt, pno, bs, dms) in a Leeds club. The usual jazz audience was swelled by a number of students from the very left-leaning Leeds University of the day, who were clearly there for the politics, not the music. When a number was announced "by the American pianist, Bill Evans", the group was booed! More palatable was listening to a "conversation" at the keyboard between the pianist and my late piano-playing friend Paul Woodrow in which the only shared vocabulary was the names "Wynton Kelly" and "McCoy Tyner". International co-operation at its best with jazz as the key!

  5. I saw Billie Holiday live on British television in the Spring of 1959 when I was 19. I was in Manchester. I guess she was in London. Another I saw (1957) who's been gone a very long time (1964) was Jack Teagarden.
  6. Sounds like me, Peter. On my phone (my current listening source) Mark Sherman is rubbing shoulders with Professor Longhair and the Jazz Couriers.
  7. I certainly can't tell what key music is in, Gheorghe, but there may still be hope for me. This morning I heard a single note from the piano in the next room and I thought "That's a C". When I went in I found that my 4-year-old granddaughter had placed a small toy figure on the C key 2 octaves below middle C!
  8. Many of my favourites: "Celia", "I'll Keep Loving You", "So Sorry Please", "Strictly Confidential", "Oblivion" and some by LaVerne. Now playing: Jones/Lewis, Potpourri
  9. Nice to see a younger player chosen. I see her a lot on YouTube, though her style might be a little too postbop for my decidedly conservative tastes. Now playing:
