Hey Ron... Do you remember where you got the "Exclusively for My Friends" box and for how much? I remember looking at it when it came out but it was running for $60 or so in stores.... Can you provide a little more info about those recordings? Band? You said it was live - Where and when? How would you rate it compared to the 1990 Telarc set??? thanks MAN, you ask a lot of questions. The 4 CD's in the box actually cover several sessions recorded from 1963 to 1968. They were recorded for a German record producer in his private studio in his villa, in front of a few invited guests. So, while they're live recordings, there is a very intimate feel to them (as if you had Oscar and friends come play for a few friends in your house). The first 3 discs are all trio performances with, depending on the session, Ray Brown or Sam Jones on bass and Ed Thigpen or Bobby Durham on drums. The fourth disc is just Oscar perfoming solo. I haven't done an A-B comparison of "Exclusively for My Friends" and "Live at the Blue Note," but in general I'd say that "Friends" is a bit more mellow than "Blue Note" and, as I said, it has a more intimate feel. The recording of "Friends" probably doesn't have the immediacy and presence that "Blue Note" has, as you'd expect given the different times in which they were recorded, but it sounds great. I got my copy of "Friends" from . . .[drum roll] . . . CAIMAN! They have it now for $43.43, as does jazzclassicaloperashop (from whom I've also made several purchases and who is EXCELLENT--IMMEDIATE first class shipping with tracking). BTW, speaking of Caiman, the Farlow set was delivered today. thank you sir.... that's VERY helpful... No more questions from me.... I will have to check out that set.... I'm glad you got the Farlow... I assume mine will come shortly...

As I mentioned earlier... I had one of the CD's. I read through the boxed set's liner notes and the package itself and it doesn't mention anything about being remastered. I don't seek any new tracks.... If you've got all 4 it's probably not worth it... but if you don't - $25 for 4 live OP CD's is a great deal.... Hope that helps...

okay clearly I need to go back and finish my glass and perhaps the bottle but I was just listening to Telarc's new boxed set of the Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the Blue Note recordings. These were issued as individual discs in the 1990's. The set was recorded in 10/1990 with Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Bobby Durham. I had one of the individual discs and decided to buy the set since Telarc was selling it for less than $30.... Fabulous set.... Anybody get it??? I have to say the more I listen to O.P. the more I can help but enjoy his stuff... I was checking out several select sets and started wondering about this. Clearly this board has superior jazz minds on it (a few odd minds, but definitely knowledgeable about jazz.... and I wondered how many of you/how often you get a Mosaic set and post a review on their site???? I do think those reviews make a big difference and I do admire people who critically analyze the music. (Some of those posts are inappropriate and I have sent an email to Mosaic a few years ago about them monitoring the reviews...) I have about 11 sets (not couting Select sets) and I've probably posted about 4 reviews... Your thoughts????? Okay off to finish listening to Oscar Peterson and my glass of Cabernet....

I do keep mine in jewel cases vertically... but why is it preferred???? I never heard that before????

okay I gather from our discussions about various box sets, that some of us here have very large either LP and/or CD collections... For those of you who have large collections - I'm talking over 1000 LPs and/or CD's, what do you do for storage???? I'm looking for a better way to store my stuff.... thanks

... in my particular case, because I wasn´t aware of them when many of those sets went OOP. Now I regret it. But my wife´s happy with it! B-) this is kind of my point... I do have a problem with someone whose primary INTENT is to make a profit off of Mosaic's (and the artist's) work. At the same time, people "find" Mosaics at different points in time... I didn't learn about until about 10 years and I missed out on several good sets... I get that this is capitalism..... That doesn't mean I have to like it....

okay so excuse me if this topic has been covered already... but I'm over at allaboutjazz checking out their bulletin board and this guy posts a note that he just paid $900 on e-bay for the Mosaic OOP Nat King Cole. So I read the thread and by the end of it I'm just ticked off.... here's the URL if you are so inclined.... http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=8054 I'm sorry but this guy is foolish but more importantly I have a BIG ethical problem with people who buy Mosaics primarily to speculate about their price and sell them on e-bay to make an individual profit. Not only are they driving up the price of OOP Mosaics but they are taking 1 of 5,000 copies (at least) from someone who really wants the music! People learn about jazz, Mosaic and specific artists at different points in time and it p**ses me off when people deny someone else the right to experience a particular musician through Mosaic. I mean I can kind of understand a jazz fan who once in a (very) long while decides they didn't like a set and tries to sell it. But it seems to me that there are people out there - who this is what they do! Can I get a little feedback here? Am I overreacting? Me.... I keep all the Mosaics I have because in 5 years I may play a set that I didn't like and find out that I love the stuff. It's about the music and your personal relationship with the music.... Sorry if I'm offending any members of the Board... but I just have an ISSUE with this.... GROWL>>>>>>>>

thanks again to Ron and ALL who gave me advice on this thread... I figured if I was being mentioned in the same breath as a crack addict, it was time to ***t or get off the pot... Due to Ron's Eagle Eyes.... (and the gift card given to be my wife:) I ended up purchasing the Tal Farlow boxed (Import), the Gerald Wilson box and the Andrew Hill Select for a total of $80 out of pocket.... I think that's about as good as it gets.... This should tide me over for a while....

No more gloating about the sports heaven that Boston has become... (Knowing us it will take ten minutes before we start complaining about Randy Johnson and the Yankees...) [i will say the one thing I LOVE about the Patriots is that there are no "me-first" guys on that team..... ] Okay on to more pressing issues.... Ron, I have several of the sets in your wish list and here are more thoughts about them... 1. J.J. Johnson - I found it very disappointing. Now this could be me... (I admit I only gave it one full listen through....) Generally I like expanded versions of songs (6-8 minutes) and many of these tracks were 2-3-4 minutes... I just couldn't get into it... (and I generally like J.J.) I can't really explain it but it just didn't grab me. 2. Johnny Hodges... - Just bought that set, haven't listened to it yet... 3. Horace Parlan - LOVED IT! A local DJ here has a show which opens with one of Parlan's tunes... It's just a very solid set... 4. Thought about the Stitt set... As all of you know... I've been debating about this. I listened to some of the Stitt I have and it's good... but not great! And 9 CD's is a lot of Stitt. I also looked at the sidemen... Nothing to write home about (particularly in the quartet dates...) So I think I've backed off about the Stitt. Thanks for the help on that. I would add one more to your list to think about.... I always was (before he had a Mosaic set) a big fan of Stanley Turrentine. LOVE the boxed set. There's a couple of tracks with he and Lee Morgan (which I think may be one of few times they recorded together) that are slammin..... As for my purchase... I'm leaning heavily toward the Gerald Wilson and the Andrew Hill select... Hope that helps...

I live in Boston and I kinda knew what was going to happen... but jeez do the Eagles know how to run a 2 minute drill???? Great game though.... You guys played us a lot tougher than they EXTREMELY OverBLOWN AND OVERHYPED Peyton Manning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going for a three-peat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
