  1. does anybody have this??? A review would be greatly appreciated.... I assume this was done before Mosaic got licensing (or whatever it is) to use the Verve tapes??? If that's correct, how does the production of this set compare to what would have been a Mosaic set (a few years later)... Also is this the set where Disc 8 is basically an interview with Lester?... Is that just filler or is it useful??? thanks
  2. I've been trying to avoid this as well as buying OOP Mosaics off ebay... I try to take the position that if I want it - buy it... and if I missed it... oh well...
  3. Johnny Smith - Disc 1.... A little uneven so far... but some of the ballads are really nice... -_-
  4. yes that's my point... they are an incredibly different contrast... still very interesting... just very different... the cd's are "Always Let Me Go" and "Inside Out."
  5. messenger... you gotta finish listening to the whole set... ! It really is fantastic... One of my favs is "Bop Be." To the original poster... if you are curious play this set... then play their "Inside Out" 2CD set... very interesting... I concur though this is a really a good set.... and the previous post about this being before Jarrett's pre-CFS is an accurate point... I'll just forewarn you.... on some of those longer 20+ min clips... you might find yourself dancing around the house..
  6. I'm on Disc 2 and really enjoying some of Cables' solos... He did a really nice/creative job on "As Time Goes By..." Works for me... No disrespec to Kenny Drew
  7. well said sal... I have a few Dex records with Kenny Drew... but to be honest when I'm listening the bulk of my attention is on Dexter... I have enjoyed what I heard from the Select set... For those of you who have both the Select and the individual CD's - how do they differ?
  8. I was gonna post this in the What set am I listening to know.. but I realized that I've haven't seen a single thread on this Select set... So far it's great.... Dex sound very strong and imaginative. The band (particularly George Cables) sound complimentary but good... I'm only on Disc 1... The sound seems a little off to me... but it's probably because I've got crappy speakers in my car.... So why so little conversation????
  9. thanks to you and JS for the explanation... I'm looking forward to the Mosaic set... as this group was/is brand new to ME?
  10. I don't know if you guys know this... but why did the Jazz Crusaders (the Mosaic set's focus) switch from that style of music to "Street Life" and whatever they are doing now.... ?
  11. sounds like a plan to me.... see my earlier post...!
  12. Sorry to not answer your question Alan but I have to say this... You guys are gonna kill me... but I just called Mosaic and asked them if they were taking pre-orders for the Jazz Crusaders set... and they said "We are now!" So... I zapped down my info.... I know its silly but I would LOVE to get like any set under the #50.... It's 5:05pm EST and they're closed now... so those of you interested (and want to plunk down the cash now) may want to call them tommorrow... But you didn't hear it from me... B-) Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. How do you know all of this??? Are you a Cuscuna INSIDER or something??? Anyway... in my anticipation of the box set... I just went out and bought the two live sessions currently out on Cd....
  14. so jazzbo... does this mean you're not going to buy the new Basie set? Hm....
  15. Can you guys compare this to the Live Roulette Box set??? I've got that one and I originally wasn't interested in another Basie box... but as I listen again to the Roulette set.... making me slightly reconsider... Anybody got both previous Basie boxes???? Hm... this one's got me perplexed. -_- -_-
  16. Count Basie Live Roulette Recordings Disc 3 - trying to decide I want the new set...
  17. thanks - that was helpful.. I'm definitely intrigued.... Hm... (As they said in the Godfather... "Just when I'm out - They pull me back in"
  18. okay so I, like all of you I read the Mosaic email about the upcoming releases and noted the Jazz Crusaders set... I'm not that familar with their stuff so I did a little research. I got the gist of their "conversion" in the 70's and 80's (and up to today)... And I do actually remember "Street Life" but... that's not what this Mosaic set is about (thankfully)... But here's my 2 questions... 1) Why do you think Mosaic DIDN'T include any of the Live at the Lighthouse Pacific Jazz releases? According to AMG there's at least another 6 LP's of live material (including Newport...) Should we lobby them to include that stuff?? 2) Anybody got a good website where I can get some samples of this material to listen to before I (very likely" pre-order ANOTHER set? thanks!!!
  19. so both jazzmaztazz and cduniverse note that there are 4 cheap Verve sets about to be released.. these include... Jazz In Paris I: Champs Elysees 1917-1949 (3 Cd's) Jazz In Paris II: Montmartre 1924-1939 (6 Cds) Jazz In Paris Ill: Rive Gauche, Rive Droite 1956-1959 (8Cd's) Jazz In Paris IV: Saint-Germain-Des-Pres 1946-1956 (3CD's) and a street date of 4/12... They are generally in the $30 price range... Anybody got any more info???? Is this just a repackage of old stuff? Or is there any new stuff in there? Any body know who's playing on any of these??? thanks - I suspect it's kinda a waist of $$ knowing what Verve has been coming out with lately and given the price tag... but I'm curious....
  20. What was it about the Select that didn't move you? I just found it incredibly uneven... Some very complex yet melodic pieces and then some "free-jazz" pieces that IMHO is just a lot of disconnected blowing....
  21. they claim they've sent me the replacement set.... Their website says it shipped so hopefully I'll recieve it next week....
  22. A while back I had a $100 Mosaic gift card and solicited your opinions about what should get with the cash... After mucho convincing I ended up with the Andrew Hill set (Not a good choice)... and the Gerald Wilson set.... (and thanks to Ron's eyes the European version of the Tal Farlow for another $50)... Just finished listening to the Wilson set and I would agree with most of you... there's some great music on this set... Some swinging arrangements and individual playing. Overally I give this a B+... Disc 3's cover of "Watermelon Man" is excellent.... The only blips on the radar screen were mainly in Disc 5 (the final disc). The pop tune covers some were okay, some were mediocre and there's a vocal track on Disc 5 that just did not work for me... I also didn't particularly like the organ pieces (but that's a minor complaint)... Overall a very swinging set... I would heartily recommend... so thanks..
  23. As I've heard before on this board... Do I need this??? Got 3 of the Miles boxes.... Not familiar with this period... Is this the post Bitches-Brew period???? I didn't buy that set since I already have the original CD issue.... How does this compare to that??? Anybody got any more info??? thanks
  24. how is that Stitt set??? I've waffled for a while as to whether ot not I should get it...
  25. Gerald Wilson Box Disc 1 ... as I grade papers... This should make my students happy...
