  1. No more gloating about the sports heaven that Boston has become... (Knowing us it will take ten minutes before we start complaining about Randy Johnson and the Yankees...) [i will say the one thing I LOVE about the Patriots is that there are no "me-first" guys on that team..... ] Okay on to more pressing issues.... Ron, I have several of the sets in your wish list and here are more thoughts about them... 1. J.J. Johnson - I found it very disappointing. Now this could be me... (I admit I only gave it one full listen through....) Generally I like expanded versions of songs (6-8 minutes) and many of these tracks were 2-3-4 minutes... I just couldn't get into it... (and I generally like J.J.) I can't really explain it but it just didn't grab me. 2. Johnny Hodges... - Just bought that set, haven't listened to it yet... 3. Horace Parlan - LOVED IT! A local DJ here has a show which opens with one of Parlan's tunes... It's just a very solid set... 4. Thought about the Stitt set... As all of you know... I've been debating about this. I listened to some of the Stitt I have and it's good... but not great! And 9 CD's is a lot of Stitt. I also looked at the sidemen... Nothing to write home about (particularly in the quartet dates...) So I think I've backed off about the Stitt. Thanks for the help on that. I would add one more to your list to think about.... I always was (before he had a Mosaic set) a big fan of Stanley Turrentine. LOVE the boxed set. There's a couple of tracks with he and Lee Morgan (which I think may be one of few times they recorded together) that are slammin..... As for my purchase... I'm leaning heavily toward the Gerald Wilson and the Andrew Hill select... Hope that helps...
  2. I'm about to hijack my own thread.... Hey Ron S.... Sorry about your Eagles man.... I live in Boston and I kinda knew what was going to happen... but jeez do the Eagles know how to run a 2 minute drill???? Great game though.... You guys played us a lot tougher than they EXTREMELY OverBLOWN AND OVERHYPED Peyton Manning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going for a three-peat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Hopefully? I just never ordered from them before... I've done other Amazon merchants and its' always been fine... so I'm sure this will be great... thanks for the tip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. okay thanks to Ron S... I (hopefully) will have the Farlow set.... I was checking out the Gerald Wilson set.. songs online are smoking.... Does anyone have the set???? And/or a review??? Hmmmmmm B-) I must admit this has become quite the dilemma....
  5. oh... and I'm trusting your word Ron S.... And please don't tell me you were the guy who said there were "Weapons of Mass Destruction" in Iraq.... (or) that you were guy who said "I did NOT have sexual relations with THAT woman, Ms. Lewinsky!!!" aside from that.... thanks... Will let you know when the set arrives...
  6. Okay THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And especially Ron S.... I took his advice and coughed up $50 of my own to get the Farlow set.... Holding onto a $100 Mosaic gift card is like holding on to good stock... (only going to get better in time.....) THANKS FOR THE ADVICE ALL ,.... especially Ron!!!!!
  7. I must admit (as the originator of the non-hijacked thread)... I did find the hijack (and the useful non-hijacked info)... very engaging.... I will say when my computer hit the Mosaic Select Kenny G, it re-booted...!!! (I guess I have trained it well)... I'm leaning toward the Farlow... but wanted to ask your opinions about one other set... Anybody got the Max Roach set???? I used to be into Roachie but I saw him live a few years back with the "Beijng Trio" and it was a DISASTER!!!! I know the Mosaic is his "prime" but that dreadful performance really turned me off.... But I'd love to get feedback about his set... thanks!>>>> (And instead of hijacking my own thread... I'll start another on a related topic...
  8. hmmmm.... thanks for the tremendous input.... I greatly appreciate it... I pulled out some of the Sonny Stitt and Tal Farlow I have and gave them both a listen... I'm leaning toward the Farlow... any other suggestions????????????? (Except Gomer Pyle type ideas ((((((((
  9. got a $100 Mosaic gift card.. what would buy? My choices are... A) Cough up another $50 and get the Sonny Stitt B) Get the Tal Farlow or Roy Eldridge (I have a few single Farlow discs and a Proper boxed set of Eldridge) C) the columbia swing sessions D) the Art Pepper and Andrew Hill select set... Also got a question... I just got the Johnny Smith set... how does his and Farlow's playing differ??? thanks
  10. guess I got my answers... and then some.... thanks
  11. Here's a question that I've been perplexed on for a while... My wife and I own a house and when we signed up for our homeowner's insurance I wanted extra protection for my jazz CD collection... (Quite large... with many Mosaics) and the insurance guy said he couldn't do a specific line item for my CD's. I explained and said that there's a lot of OOP stuff, records only released overseas, Mosaics, etc... He still couldn't/wouldn't do it. Does anyone actually have any insurance on their collections, esp. Mosaics???? Any suggestions??? thanks!
  12. completely understandable...
  13. Are we EVER going to see the McCoy Tyner set????
  14. I lean toward getting the Stitt set myself.. but here's my dilemma... The larger Mosaic boxes seem to have much more variation in them than the smaller sets.. (e.g., albums that could have been left out and were of questionable quality...) For example... I have the... Sarah Vaughn set (8CD's)... several of those records could have been left out... (even Mosaic in their liner notes admits that some of the material is not great... "Not every track will be to every taste – Roulette was a label built on hits and chased them with material that ranged from cotton candy to near-legit.") To me they could have left out at least 2 or 3 CD's worth of material and had a MUCH more consistent set of excellent material... Similar complaint on the Complete Roulette Live Count Basie (8CD's).... How many versions of "One O'Clock Jump" can I hear??? (I know this is as much Basie's repetition of his repetoire as anything else...) However, Mosaic could have been more selective... Yet on the opposite side... The Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions (8CD's) I find absolutely marvelous... I wouldn't delete one track!!!!!!!!!! So my experience is that Mosaic's smaller sets (4-5 even 6Cd's) tend to have a more consistent high quality with few "questionable" tracks included, whereas the 8 or 9 CD sets are hit or miss in that category... Which all brings me to say - that this is why I've hestitated on the 9CD Stitt set... Your thoughts??? (Particularly about this issue of their larger vs. smaller sets...) I may just beg my wife to buy it for me.... thanks for the feedback.
  15. taken from the 1-8 update on jazzmatazz.com "The Jazz Crusaders - The Pacific Jazz Studio Sessions (Mosaic) late 2005 " anybody got any more info????
