hmmm.. Shaken, But not Forsaken (from the soundtrack to a scrapped Bond movie) - 11:30 McCoy & Bond.... what a match!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what was the scapped Bond movie???? Please tell me that it wasn't a Bond movie with Sean Connery (not that fraud Bond - Roger Moore)???? Hey on a related question... Art Blakey had a slammin' record called "Soulfinger" (spinoff of Bond movie "Goldfinger") which I've never been able to find on CD.... Here's the info from AMG... "After six years of very consistent personnel (with only a few gradual changes), Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1965 were in a state of transition. This particular LP found both Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard making farewell appearances on trumpet, pianist John Hicks and bassist Victor Sproles joining up as short-term members and veteran Lucky Thompson being well featured on both tenor and soprano sax. The music is more relaxed than usual but still contains some of that distinctive Jazz Messengers fire. This rare set is worth searching for." Anybody have it? Know where to get it???

I understand your point.... and it's a good one... but this hasn't stopped Cuscuna before.... If you look at the Hank Mobley box, several of those sessions were out on CD (and still in print) before the box set came out. For example - both "Hank Mobley and his All Stars" and "Peckin' Time" were already out on CD. I think "Poppin" was also... They did this again with the Lou Donaldson set..."Sunny Side Up" and "Gravy Train" and "Blues Walk" had all been out... So I don't think that's unusual... Also we don't know what "extra" stuff they have in the vaults (e.g., alternate takes, any unreleased recordings, etc.) So that's why I was hoping for a full box.... I too will buy the Select though... BTW since we know now it will be out on 1/2006, do we know when it will be avialable for pre-order on the Web??? (November???)

very mixed feelings.... I'm delirious as a big McCoy fan...especially since the only one of that set that I have is Extensions... but I'm totally bummed about the lack of the full box set.... Do we know what actually happened prohibiting the full box??? I know jazzmatazz said it was in doubt due to the infamous "licensing issues,'" but that doesn't really say much... anybody now the inside story... Of course I'll preordered the Select set....(maybe even 2) .... B-)

I desperately have mixed feelings... I was SO hoping the full BN box was coming to come out... For example "Time for Tyner" (although briefly released as a CD a few years back) is one of my favorite McCoy records..... I'm sure they could have found some extra stuff... I just zipped over to AMG and they list some of the following as 1960's BN dates (that presumably would have been on a box set).. The Real McCoy Tender Moments Time for Tyner Expansions Cosmos Extensions Asante Although I have 3 of those (The Real McCoy, Time for Tyner & Extensions) I definitely would have bought the box.... Wasn't "Tender Moments" also released on CD?? Do we an ETA on the Select set?? (Other than next year?) Should we start a lobbying campaign for the box set????

generally I have only bought Mosaic sets which focus on an individual. I have 15 or so boxes on mostly be-bop related folks (E.g. Turrentine, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, etc.) I have stayed away from Mosiac sets which focus on a particular period of time and/or a label for 2 reasons. One, it seems to me there's a lot more selectivety of what Mosaic chooses to include (or not)... and two, generally speaking that tends to be a lot of the pre-1950 stuff (which I'm not that familar with).... I was looking at these two sets (not that I've got the $$ to get either of them now).... but if I do get one of these in the near future, which would you recommend and why??? thanks....
-
I am so impressed with this music... I must admit two musicians who are standing out to me - who I didn't know that well prior to this set... are Barney Kessel and Flip Phillips.. Wow!!! Did anyone get the Flip Phillips Mosiac set from years back???? What Cd's would you guys recommend as the best works of Kessel and Phillips (seperately)?

do you post reviews on Mosaic's site?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
wow .. .no replies... I guess that means no one does... (other than me...) the reason I asked is it does seem to me that the reviews on their site are very influential.... but I guess I'm just a crazy kinda guy.... hmmmm -
Please tell me I spent my money wisely.

It's amazing how many birthdays/celebrations/my wife messed up (so buy me off with a Mosaic gift card) moments you can have???? I too have been a CD binge lately... but okay... I'm gonna commit heresy here... When my wife was pregnant with our daughter last year, I deliberately went on a binge and called in almost every favor since I knew when was our daughter was born... my disposable cash was gone.... At the moment I'm savoring in several unopened to be listened to Mosaic sets.... And I actually DO have a birthday coming up this year Can you imagine that??? -

I'm going to follow this thread carefully and please give us your complete thoughts once you've recieved and listened to the set... I'm kinda in the same boat as you are ... not that familiar with her stuff..... I haven't bought the box yet but am curious... FYI... I bought and DID not like the Curtis Amy stuff... The cuts with the organ were the worst... I am much happier with the Carmell Jones select set... Buy that! -
thanks man.... appreciate that...

OH... My bad.. thanks for clearing that up....

I agree with you about Verve packaging... the sad thing is MOST of the people who will buy these box sets are us.... jazz fans who care about the content. You would think they would cater their packaging to us.... And btw.. I shipped back the Farlow to camain.com today.. Will see how long it takes to get a replacement set... Even for $50 I want the best I can get...i -
Well, no , it doesn't mean that. It just means they probably got 1500 in at least, and that's the one they grabbed. Why do you think they send them out in numerical order? Okay here's what I'm thinking.. when you get a regular Mosaic box you get #3222 of 5000... I'm not saying that its' mailed out in the exact sequential order. I'm saying that of the 5000 they're printing, you've got #3222. The other 3221 have already gone out... (in whatever order they went out...) So there would be then 1778 left... So with the Andrew Hill set... my point is that they have already sold (based on preorders alone) at least 1372 or 27% of their production total... Which (to me) means this set is selling really well.... Am I making sense?

tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
you're absolutely right... Ron.... there is a significant drop in sound quality on the 3rd disc.... It's a bummer since the music is great.... I thought I heard the dreaded...... "hiss," at the beginning of cd 3.... this was one of the reasons (that and $$$) I begged off the JATP Live boxed set a few years ago... (poor recording quality...) but the music is really hot... -
okay like all of you who preordered the Hill set, I just got my copy today... I glanced at the boc and it was #1372 of 5000. That means 27% of their supply was preordered... Damn!!!!!!!!!! I looked at the Dexter Gordon set I ordered when that first came out, an my set was #493 of 5,000. Now I know that that there's a lot of Dexter out there but this Hill set must be hot!!!! Impressive.........
-
hmmm... that's very good to know... I've just emailed them to ask about their return policy.... (and replacement...) Will keep you informed... thanks for quelling my queaziness about these guys.... (I think I deserve a point for have 2 Q's in one sentence... !!

no I couldn't get the smudgeprint off..... It's on the label side of the CD so I'm assuming the actual music/track info is untouched.... otherwise it was exactly as you described... thanks
-
B-) And I am a VERY happy camper... Managed to get this 5 cd box for $45 or so right before it came out... It's listed for $44.29 + $1.40 for shipping.... on overstock.com ... here's the URL if you're interested.. http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PA...PROD_ID=1032419 I'm just on Disc 1 and it's slamming...

hey ron... got my tal farlow set yesterday... thanks again for the tip... It arrived almost exactly as you described.... (One major smudgeprint on one of the CDs though...) thanks...
-
hmm.... this is making me nervous.... I assume all else (particularly the music/tracks/band) is the same....?

Hey Ron... Do you remember where you got the "Exclusively for My Friends" box and for how much? I remember looking at it when it came out but it was running for $60 or so in stores.... Can you provide a little more info about those recordings? Band? You said it was live - Where and when? How would you rate it compared to the 1990 Telarc set??? thanks MAN, you ask a lot of questions. The 4 CD's in the box actually cover several sessions recorded from 1963 to 1968. They were recorded for a German record producer in his private studio in his villa, in front of a few invited guests. So, while they're live recordings, there is a very intimate feel to them (as if you had Oscar and friends come play for a few friends in your house). The first 3 discs are all trio performances with, depending on the session, Ray Brown or Sam Jones on bass and Ed Thigpen or Bobby Durham on drums. The fourth disc is just Oscar perfoming solo. I haven't done an A-B comparison of "Exclusively for My Friends" and "Live at the Blue Note," but in general I'd say that "Friends" is a bit more mellow than "Blue Note" and, as I said, it has a more intimate feel. The recording of "Friends" probably doesn't have the immediacy and presence that "Blue Note" has, as you'd expect given the different times in which they were recorded, but it sounds great. I got my copy of "Friends" from . . .[drum roll] . . . CAIMAN! They have it now for $43.43, as does jazzclassicaloperashop (from whom I've also made several purchases and who is EXCELLENT--IMMEDIATE first class shipping with tracking). BTW, speaking of Caiman, the Farlow set was delivered today. thank you sir.... that's VERY helpful... No more questions from me.... I will have to check out that set.... I'm glad you got the Farlow... I assume mine will come shortly...

As I mentioned earlier... I had one of the CD's. I read through the boxed set's liner notes and the package itself and it doesn't mention anything about being remastered. I don't seek any new tracks.... If you've got all 4 it's probably not worth it... but if you don't - $25 for 4 live OP CD's is a great deal.... Hope that helps...

okay clearly I need to go back and finish my glass and perhaps the bottle but I was just listening to Telarc's new boxed set of the Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the Blue Note recordings. These were issued as individual discs in the 1990's. The set was recorded in 10/1990 with Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Bobby Durham. I had one of the individual discs and decided to buy the set since Telarc was selling it for less than $30.... Fabulous set.... Anybody get it??? I have to say the more I listen to O.P. the more I can help but enjoy his stuff... Here's the Telarc link for those interested... http://www.telarc.com/Jazz/title.asp?gsku=...K6RUAJXLX7PE6K0 camian.com at Amazon.com has it for $24.68 and cduniverse.com has it for $27.35... NOW.... I'm going to finish my wine... !!!!

I was checking out several select sets and started wondering about this. Clearly this board has superior jazz minds on it (a few odd minds, but definitely knowledgeable about jazz.... and I wondered how many of you/how often you get a Mosaic set and post a review on their site???? I do think those reviews make a big difference and I do admire people who critically analyze the music. (Some of those posts are inappropriate and I have sent an email to Mosaic a few years ago about them monitoring the reviews...) I have about 11 sets (not couting Select sets) and I've probably posted about 4 reviews... Your thoughts????? Okay off to finish listening to Oscar Peterson and my glass of Cabernet....
