It's now July 7, 12.49 AM over here, so: have a great day!
-
The 1962 date refers to the year the session was recorded. I guess you're right. AMG also lists 1962 as the release date at the bottom of this page under "album releases", but they aren't that reliable either...
-
This site seems to suggest it was released in 1962. I couldn't find any other release date in my reference books or anywhere else.

Storyville will reissue The New York Contemporary Five as a 24-bit remastered CD on July 8 (Storyville 101 8385)

Which (in my opinion) means they're not good enough.

I'm with you, J.A.W. That Greek team reminded me of the German teams from the Franz Beckenbauer era. Not really exciting to look at but effective. Yes, the Greeks deserved to win. They had the stamina to endure those difficult games. But after all is considered, the Euro2004 is more than a bit worrisome about the current state of soccer in Europe. No real individual great appeared among the younger elements. And the Old Guard grew older. They gave us plenty of joy several years ago, but no more. Not sure the next generation of players will be more exciting now that money has taken over soccer. yup, the type of football the Greeks played was cetainly not to my liking. Only on a higher level of observation where it obviously kicked the ass of all those big names. And with what? with a type of football the modern, fast game of the nineties supposedly had dealt with succesfully. The modern game had corroded itself, though, so back to the drawing board there and make sure it doesn't get rusty that fast again. I agree with you there (sigh) ()

I couldn't agree more.

I was merely talking about the "great" football of the fairly recent (1998 World Cup) and more distant past. I agree that the current "great" teams didn't play "great" football, on the contrary; the last two tournaments (2002 World Cup, Euro 2004) were a major disappointment in that respect, and I also hope the "majors" and their often arrogant and spoilt players () will have learnt their lesson - I'm not so sure about that, though... As for the Greek team, they deserved to win, of course, if only for the lack of an effective response from their opponents, and I admired the way they played as a team, but I really hated their "German" style of defensive play and counter football. But hey, that's just me...
-
Greece had the best collective, but I didn't see them play much great football (and that's an understatement), and by "great" I mean some wonderful individual actions and attacking play. I'm a fan of attacking football as played by teams like, for instance, France, Argentina and the Netherlands in the 1998 World Cup, the great Brazilian and Dutch teams of the past and the like, and I don't like the kind of football the Greeks played, however effective.

I'm glad the board's back up. Let's hope it'll stay that way... -
I'm not too fond of Rosolino's albums as a leader. I picked that one up because of Kamuca.

You know we all had such problematic childhoods - we're desperately in need of a strong but loving father A figure like Wilhelm Tell, who almost shot his kid...

Give me a break, Hans. I've worked on AAJ 10-14 hours a day for the last eight years. Database design, programming, web design, publishing, needs assessments, requirements planning... that's my job. I haven't got a problem with that, but saying that "AAJ’s look will also be a bit more refined" is quite a statement. More refined than what?

As long as you don't send them my way, I don't care... I was just on my way to the Post Office...

Ha, you should see the number of (early) Elvis recordings in my collection!

It's one of the better late-period Hawk albums. For what it's worth, the Penguin Guide (6th ed.) gives it 4 stars, AMG four and a half.

I think you should get Body and Soul, it is THE classic Hawk recording! (By the way, it celebrates its 65th birthday on October 11) Anyone with even the remotest interest in jazz tenor saxophone should have it, it's a milestone. Hans, is this disc good enough to get, even if might go the Chronological Classics way some day? I think it is. The recordings were remastered from the original metal parts and mastertapes at the RCA Studios. It contains 19 tracks: 4 recordings (including Body and Soul) from 1939, 4 from 1940, 2 from 1946, 4 from 1947, and 5 (2 with strings) from 1956. The usual disclaimers apply, of course It's available from CD Universe ($9.99) and CDConnection - and others, of course.

This one's absolutely essential, of course (in spite of the 1950s recordings with strings), since it contains the classic 1939 recording of Body and Soul: Body and Soul - RCA Also essential: Coleman Hawkins / Chu Berry - Tenor Giants - Commodore The Essential Keynote Collection, Vol.6: The Complete Coleman Hawkins - 4CD, EmArcy Hollywood Stampede - Capitol
