  2. AMG Mississippi Sheiks review (sound quality included B) )
  3. I was about to post that, but you beat me to it...
  4. The Hill is a great session; good to see it on CD - finally! The Rivers and Wilson aren't bad either.
  5. AMG review of the Hopkins release.
  6. AMG review of the Carr set.
  7. According to the third edition of Dixon & Godrich's Blues & Gospel Records, 1902-1943 Leroy Carr recorded about 175 sides for Vocalion between 1928 and 1934, and 8 sides for Bluebird in 1935.
  8. Excellent news for blues lovers! According to the May issue of ICE magazine (page 22) Sony Legacy, who own the recordings, will release a Leroy Carr 2CD-set with 40 of his Vocalion recordings, Whiskey Is My Habit, Good Women Is All I Crave. It can be pre-ordered from CDUniverse for $17.49. They're also releasing 20 of Lightnin' Hopkins' early recordings on 1 CD, Hello Central: The Best of Lightnin' Hopkins, which can be pre-ordered from CDUniverse for $8.39. The street date of both releases is May 18.

Not even Django? Or Wes? I suppose my recommendations of Keiji Haino have had no impact? Wow. I pressed the 'Quote' button but I think I should have hit 'Report!' Of course, how could I forget Wes! He's one of my favourites. Thanks for reminding me

Sorry to disappoint you, but no, I don't like acoustic guitar at all, at least not in jazz. Classical: OK, blues: great, but not in jazz.

Ah, good to hear Gokhan, I'm feeling a bit less lonely here now...

OK, I like Jerry Hahn's sound a little better, though I don't like his Arhoolie CD, which is the only one I've heard. You'd better stop wasting your energy, Д.Д. (I appreciate the effort, though) I'm not really a jazz guitar fan, except for the few names I mentioned above.

How about Derek Bailey? Awful... Shit. Elliott Sharp? Nope.

The only guitarists I like in jazz (though in small doses) are guys like Tal Farlow, Jimmy Raney, Sal Salvador, René Thomas, and Kenny Burrell.

Д.Д. I simply don't like the "guitar sound" in many free / improv discs, however different it may be (remember my rant about Stangl on Koglmann's l'Heure Bleue?) By the way, I didn't imply that Adams' playing wasn't good or anything like that, it's just that I don't like that sound... I fully and wholeheartedly agree with you on the Metheny sound.

Re Ghostly Thoughts, I think it was John Adams' guitar that put me off this CD.
  18. I've had some serious problems with www.jpc.de. Every time I ordered CDs from them, they immediately charged my credit card, before they even knew whether or not they'd be able to supply the discs. The amounts they charged were always higher than the actual amount of the order. I found out what they had done when I was confronted with an overdraft on my card I knew nothing about. When I asked jpc about this they replied they'd refund the overcharge once the order was completed (which could take some time). I never ordered anything from them again.
  19. Same here...

No, it doesn't, but I didn't say so; not being the only one who liked it was your argument, not mine. As for your "Question of the Day", you forgot a third possibility: people might feel indifferent about it

I'm sorry, but that doesn't convince me, and neither does it prove that it's a good album.

I respectfully disagree re Paul Dunmall's Ghostly Thoughts. I hated it and sold it a while ago. Don't ask me why I hated it, I banned it from my memory; it's been a long time since I've heard it and don't want to listen to it ever again.

  24. My condolences to you and your family.
