My good friend Sem van Gelder, who owns and runs "Swingmaster", the only specialist blues and jazz records and CDs store here in Groningen, is thinking of retiring next year, after 25+ years.

Whoa, that's tough. Makes one wonder why. -
Your post made me check my copy again, just in case I missed it the first time - it's fine, so it's not a pressing fault that affects the whole run.

Same complaint here. They're doing it to get their hands on the money asap, a disadvantage of the current Amazon Marketplace system.
-
Many Amazon stores incorrectly list items as being "in stock", while in reality they have to get them from their suppliers first, which in some cases takes a long time. It's a nuisance and I've complained about it a few times, to no avail.

Tried to post a link, but it doesn't seem to work. This one does: Amazon link AMG review

New jazz box sets on the horizon?
J.A.W. replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This has got to be the solo stuff. The Brown/Roach stuff was on the 4 cd first volume. In true intelligent record company fashion, this is nowhere to be found on the Hip-o website! Vol.2 contains the master takes of the recordings with Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Helen Merrill: AMG. You're right. It even states this in the Hip-o site's description of the 1st volume. I guess this means there will be a third volume containing the jam sessions and string date? The master takes of the jam sessions (4 tracks) can be found on disc 2 of Vol.1 and the master takes of the string dates with Neal Hefti's Orchestra (12 tracks) on disc 3. -

The main advantage I see to not worrying about duplicate threads is that it encourages those not only new to the board, but those new to jazz. The boards I go to that seem to be growing, living boards don't worry about duplicate threads, and newbies seem to stick around a lot more, growing in knowledge and in contributing to the board. The boards that worry about duplicate threads and insist that newbies use the search feature, post on the appropriate thread, etc., seem to run of the noobs quickly, and soon become an "old gang" board. I agree with Tom Storer in that, in this day of facebook, bulletin boards may be up against it, but there are boards that are doing fine. Of course, the other advantage to not worrying about duplicate threads is less work for you... As I see it duplicate threads are a nuisance when they're posted shortly after the original thread, especially when there's a discussion going on in the earlier one. The starting point here is to keep all info and opinions on a particular subject in one thread as much as possible, which makes a discussion a lot easier to follow (and take part in) than when it is fragmented between threads and it also makes it easier to do a search.

The transfers for the big Sony Armstrong box that was released in 2000 were done by Steve Berkowitz, Michael Brooks, Ken Robertson and Phil Schaap and the mastering was done by Seth Foster, Ken Robertson, Tom "Curly" Ruff, Phil Schaap and Mark Wilder. There's no mention of Harry Coster and Darcy Proper, so I guess the upcoming box was newly transferred and remastered. Would it be possible for you to compare a few tracks from both boxes, once you have received the new one?

If this release covers the years 1913-1938, I wonder why they used a picture of the sinking of the Titanic (1912) for the cover...

All preoccupations are tiresome in the end. -
And what happened next? The suspense is killing me...

Are there any sound samples of the Russell anywhere? (Not on Amazon, I know)

Got the AE disc earlier this week.

How can you tell that he has you blocked? By the way, he can only delete his own posts, not the ones others posted to his threads - only moderators can do that. -
Do you read French? Or buy from amazon.fr?

Thanks, Brownie. Can't figure out how to find PMs, however. Click on your name at the top right-hand corner and a drop-down menu will open, then click on "messenger" and you will find the "compose new" button just under your name at the top right-hand corner of that page. Good luck. -
No, it's not the biggest deal, but in post #57 above I stated what I thought the disadvantages of duplicates threads were and what the advantages of not having duplicates threads were. So what might be the advantages of duplicate threads? I'm willing to listen. As for the the spinster school marm thing, while the situations may not be quite parallel, I recall an ill-fated college course I took in Homeric Greek, which was taught by one of the world's chief experts on the subject. Our first task was to memorize the 24-letter Greek alphabet, from Alpha to Omicron. Something of a child of the 1960s, or perhaps just a lazy schmuck, I failed to do this by the second day of class, as was the case for a good many others. When the teacher realized this, he pointed out that until we knew the alphabet we would be greatly handicapped in looking up anything in the Greek-to-English side of our Greek-English dictionaries, and that as novices we would be looking up things there a whole lot. Errr... The Greek alphabet runs from alpha to omega:

Talking about low traffic, I occasionally visit other boards, including Jazz Corner, with far less traffic.

I agree with Larry, Tom and Lon, and I think Tom has a point regarding Facebook - and other "social media". With Lon I wish I hadn't joined FB years ago, seeing how it handles privacy and things like that and remembering the unpleasant characters I met there before I left. I wish the continuous moderator bashing by a few members here would stop. As I said several times before Larry does an excellent job. I know from personal experience how unpleasant things can become when you're a moderator and I admire his willingness to stay on despite all the hassle and harassment. I'm sure he's got much better things to do. If you don't agree with some or any of the rules and/or the way they are interpreted, just take it up with Jim via PM, or leave the board altogether.

Seconded, it's an amazing set with relatively excellent sound. It thrashes all other Hawkins collections.

Looking for Charlie Christian suggestions

The 2012 box is a reissue of the box that came out in 2002, which was remastered and sounded a lot better than the bad-sounding earlier disc. Having said that, I don't like the sound on the 2002 box either, to my ears it is harsh/shrill. I have the long OOP French Masters of Jazz CDs, which I think have the best sound of all. -
That would be The Return of Howard McGhee, recorded on October 22, 1955 with Sahib Shihab, Duke Jordan, Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones, and issued on Bethlehem BCP-42. It was later reissued as That Bop Thing.
