  1. Just listened to Sweetnighter from the 1971-1975 Weather Report set and to my ears it sounds too loud and also very harsh/shrill. I have no idea how the original recording sounds and I don't have other versions to compare it to, but I don't like this mastering. Very disappointing. By the way, Mark Wilder mastered the set. I do have the 2007 Mark Wilder DSD masterings of Tale Spinnin' and Mysterious Traveller on Japanese CDs and I'll compare them later to the same albums in the set. [follow-up] Just did a very quick comparison of the first two tracks on Mysterious Traveller. The 2007 Japanese CD (Sony SICP 1243) is much easier on the ears than the version from the set.
  2. Mr Wilder left the Hoffman board years ago and all his posts have been deleted, I believe at his own request.
  3. I got a couple of scans, thanks, much appreciated. I obviously still prefer the booklet itself, so if anyone is selling one, please drop me a PM.
  4. Just got an e-mail from True Blue Music that they're having a Nessa CDs sale.
  5. No copy unfortunately, but there are sound samples on this AMG page.

I second that recommendation. It was reissued on Euphoria/Sundazed in 2001 and it's a legit release It was mastered by Bob Irwin, who has done a lot of mastering jobs for Sundazed. The CD has 16 tracks, including 5 bonus tracks.

I agree that Piano and Pen is by no means a high energy session. However, for me there is a tasty low key elegance that make it quite enjoyable. My recollection is that the Katz Trio date on Reservoir is a more swinging session. As Peter said these are not high energy sessions (recorded in December 1958 and January 1959), but to my ears the guitarists, Chuck Wayne on the former session and Jimmy Raney on the latter, are worth the price of admission alone. I'm one of the world's top Raney fans and like Wayne, too, but IMO Raney fares much better on his own ABC-Paramount albums from a few years earlier, as does Wayne on his marvelous VIK album with Don Joseph and a pocket big band, "Strings Attached." Again, Atlantic engineering tended to be of the ingrown-toenail school, and that, combined with the less than electrifying team of Kay and Joe Benjamin, cast something of a pall over the results. Still, I'm glad I have "Piano and Pen" because Katz-led dates are rare. I think you mean Chuck Wayne's String Fever. You're right, that album and Raney's ABC-Paramount dates are better. The latter would be perfect for a Mosaic set, even though the Spanish "cowboys" (as another member called them) have released them all.

  9. Perhaps Mr Bluiett can be persuaded to allow someone (JLH or maybe you, Chuck) access to the master for a reissue.
  10. The Hamiet Bluiett 2CD-set Im/Possible to Keep might be a good reissue candidate. In my view it's an excellent album, issued on CD by the long defunct India Navigation label and impossible to find.
  11. Depends on what you prefer. The set has all the master takes and alternates, which might make it a difficult listen if you don't program your CD player. I had most of the original albums on Japanese CDs, but sold them and got the set instead. I have no idea what is still available. The original albums included in the set are: ● West Coast Jazz ● Stan Getz and the "Cool" Sounds (only the tracks that were recorded in 1955; the remaining tracks are included in the Hip-O set mentioned below, except for the studio version of a live recording that was mistakenly used) ● The Steamer ● Award Winner also included are: ● one track originally issued on The Soft Swing (U.K.) ● one track originally issued on The Verve Collector's Item ● alternates and stuff that was previously unissued in the U.S. [edit] If you get the Hip-O 3CD-set Quintets: The Clef and Norgran Studio Albums and East of the Sun you'll have virtually everything Getz recorded for Norman Granz between 1952 and 1957 - the studio recordings, that is, with the exception of a live date that was mistakenly included in the former set instead of the studio recording.
  12. I agree, in my opinion John Prine's first album is his best by far. I picked it up when it came out in 1971 and still love it after all these years. Great songwriter.
  13. Dick Garcia was a friend of my mom's family. I believe he passed long ago. As far as I know Dick Garcia (born in 1931) is still alive.
  14. gdogus is posting occasionally in the "What Are You Listening To Right Now?" thread. Last post: August 18, 2012.
  15. Van Morrison is a non-jazz artist who recorded for Blue Note.
  16. Looking for this 2CD-set: Hamiet Bluiett - Im/Possible to Keep - India Navigation IN 1072 Please PM me if you're selling it or know where it's available at a reasonable price. Payment by PayPal. Thanks.
  17. I have the Mainstream Clifford Brown & Max Roach on a Mobile Fidelity CD.
  18. As a moderator you can pin it yourself. By the way, about a year and a half or so ago (when I was still a moderator) it was decided that the individual album cover threads would not be pinned.
  19. Found him on the internet: NY Times obit; the obit dates from November 15, 1995.
  20. This has got to be the solo stuff. The Brown/Roach stuff was on the 4 cd first volume. In true intelligent record company fashion, this is nowhere to be found on the Hip-o website! Vol.2 contains the master takes of the recordings with Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Helen Merrill: AMG. You're right. It even states this in the Hip-o site's description of the 1st volume. I guess this means there will be a third volume containing the jam sessions and string date? The master takes of the jam sessions (4 tracks) can be found on disc 2 of Vol.1 and the master takes of the string dates with Neal Hefti's Orchestra (12 tracks) on disc 3. I picked up a copy of Vol.1 earlier this week and am listening to disc 1. Though I'm not really a fan of mastering engineer Kevin Reeves' work, I like the sound on this set. Recommended!
  21. I picked up the Herbie Hancock 60s Blue Note Sessions box again today (had it years ago, but sold it). Unfortunately, the booklet is missing the last page with some discographical info, so if anyone has a copy and is willing to sell it to me, please drop me a PM. A photocopy/scan of the last page would also do. Thanks.
  22. So someone apparently used your account without your permission. Sounds alarming.
  23. This is getting creepy.

  25. Well, it's not showing up right now on my computer , but "sorry" was/is a hyperlink takes you to one of those "Make $700 a Day Working at Home" scam sites. Ah, I see. Didn't/doesn't show up on my computer either.
