Monk - Complete Riverside Vs Riverside Albums
J.A.W. replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So I take it this session is in stereo on both boxes? I've had the mono LP for ages and was really disappointed when I got the stereo CD; the bass is buried. On the Complete Riverside Recordings - at least on my Japanese box - it's in both mono and stereo. -
Monk - Complete Riverside Vs Riverside Albums

The 2010 Universal 16CD-box All Monk - The Riverside Albums is a repackaging of Monk's 16 OJC/Riverside/Jazzland CDs in album order, so there's nothing new; the same OJC masterings were used. The 15CD-box The Complete Riverside Recordings has more extra stuff than was included on the OJC CDs. -
Yes, those are the three Heps and yes, the sound is so much better, at least to my ears.

Despair not: http://www.organissi...-at-newport-63/ The link in the first post is still live. http://www.archive.o...Live-Newport-63 Thanks. The music sounds interesting, but I'm still not sure I'd spend $60 for a box, the more so since it'd probably be insanely expensive to have it mailed to Europe - and I'm not even talking about any tax/duty that would be payable...

I wish I could listen to it first, but I guess there's little chance of that...

Yes, but that set is marred by noise reduction and that's why some people prefer the John R.T. Davies-mastered Hep CDs; they are the ones to get, even if they don't include the small-group sessions. Those can be found on Vols.8 and 9 of the French Masters of Jazz Count Basie series; I don't know if they are still easily available (and affordable), though.

To shell out $60 for someone whose music I've never heard... Not sure I'd do that.

Wow - a BIG welcome back ! Last time you were logged on, the economy was still on a roll, credit crunch not an issue, Greece was solvent and Blair/Bush still in office. Another world ! I'm not so sure Greece was solvent at the time, they were just hiding their problems and covering things up as we later found out...

Welcome back, Jeff!

That's certainly good news. I can do without those biopics too, they're quirky indeed.

BBC4 is my favourite TV channel. I hope it'll survive the BBC cuts.

Could be. I sold my 1994 CD box a long time ago, so I can't check if there are any artefacts that point to digital noise reduction.
-
Unfortunately that box sounds as if heavy noise reduction was applied, it killed the music. I don't find the vinyl set THAT bad. With 20s/30s recordings a lot of it always is a fine line between not doing enough and overdoing it, and not everyone is a John R.T. Davies who managed to strike the right balance, but overall I find this package VERY listenable. I was talking about digital noise reduction on the Columbia CD box that came out in 1994, not the earlier LP set - I edited my earlier post accordingly. The link above shows a release by one of the European public-domain labels. Unfortunately that box sounds as if heavy noise reduction was applied, it killed the music. Yeah, it's a little shocking at first, but with time it seems Ok and I'm enjoying the music. I count between 20-30 tracks on this set that aren't on other available sets. I didn't make clear that I meant the original Columbia CD box. I edited my post accordingly. You were linking to a release by a European public-domain label. Sorry for the confusion.

Singer/composer Dory Previn has died. She was 86. BBC obit

There are very few albums with tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes, one of my favourites, so I'd say grab it! Haynes was on 3 of Dave Bailey's albums, Reaching Out (later reissued under Grant Green's name with the same title), Bash! (later reissued under Kenny Dorham's name as Osmosis) and Two Feet in the Gutter.

Very sad. He was 80 (born Feb.2, 1932).

To add a bit of info to this old thread: I just read on Kevin Gray's Cohearent Audio site that AcousTech Mastering closed its doors in September 2010. -
