  1. That will no doubt diminish their value on eBay. I couldn't care less, but in my experience people attach much value to the number of a set.
  2. Same here.
  3. That's certainly good news. I can do without those biopics too, they're quirky indeed.
  4. BBC4 is my favourite TV channel. I hope it'll survive the BBC cuts.
  5. Could be. I sold my 1994 CD box a long time ago, so I can't check if there are any artefacts that point to digital noise reduction.
  6. Unfortunately that box sounds as if heavy noise reduction was applied, it killed the music. I don't find the vinyl set THAT bad. With 20s/30s recordings a lot of it always is a fine line between not doing enough and overdoing it, and not everyone is a John R.T. Davies who managed to strike the right balance, but overall I find this package VERY listenable. I was talking about digital noise reduction on the Columbia CD box that came out in 1994, not the earlier LP set - I edited my earlier post accordingly. The link above shows a release by one of the European public-domain labels. Unfortunately that box sounds as if heavy noise reduction was applied, it killed the music. Yeah, it's a little shocking at first, but with time it seems Ok and I'm enjoying the music. I count between 20-30 tracks on this set that aren't on other available sets. I didn't make clear that I meant the original Columbia CD box. I edited my post accordingly. You were linking to a release by a European public-domain label. Sorry for the confusion.
  7. Unfortunately the original Columbia CD box sounds as if heavy noise reduction was applied, it killed the music. [edited to clarify which box I was talking about]
  8. Singer/composer Dory Previn has died. She was 86. BBC obit
  9. There are very few albums with tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes, one of my favourites, so I'd say grab it! Haynes was on 3 of Dave Bailey's albums, Reaching Out (later reissued under Grant Green's name with the same title), Bash! (later reissued under Kenny Dorham's name as Osmosis) and Two Feet in the Gutter.
  10. Very sad. He was 80 (born Feb.2, 1932).
  11. To add a bit of info to this old thread: I just read on Kevin Gray's Cohearent Audio site that AcousTech Mastering closed its doors in September 2010.

  13. Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane were featured in the 1966 "Titans of the Tenor" concert.
  14. Got a copy earlier this month.
  15. Replied by PM. Currently at $8.00 (not my item, just passing along after looking at the listing) Corea Is listing on Ebay I know, that's member vibes' auction. Thanks.
  16. If you read my post again you will see that it's a reply to Peter Johnson's post about Live at the Village Vanguard. Producer Bill Levenson said a few years ago when the series was being prepared that the "Originals" would be mastered by different people - Todd Whitelock being one of them - and that the original tapes would be used. It's confirmed on AMG that Mr Whitelock did the mastering of the "Original" of this album. These John Coltrane impulse! albums were mastered by Todd Whitelock and issued in the "Originals" series: ● Ballads ● Africa/Brass ● "Live" at the Village Vanguard ● Duke Ellington & John Coltrane ● Coltrane and these were mastered by Kevin Reeves: ● John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman ● Impressions ● Live at Birdland ● Crescent ● A Love Supreme ● Ascension ● The John Coltrane Quartet Plays ● Kulu Se Mama ● Meditations ● New Thing at Newport [edited to correct a grammatical error]
  17. The 20-bit mastered CD reissue was done by Erick Labson and Todd Whitelock mastered the "Originals" CD reissue.
  18. of "Red Rubber Ball" fame
  19. No, the first recording session with Cedar Walton was on October 2, 1961. It was released as Mosaic (Blue Note 4090). Golden Boy (Colpix) was recorded in 1963. 21. Teutonic?? Check your facts, another sad mistake. On second thoughts, never mind.
  22. Now you know how it feels to be on the receiving end of condescension for a change, instead of handing it out. Anyway, I'm not going to continue this petty fight. Bye.
  23. No thanks, I don't need your mangled English.
  24. Whatever. Nice try to wriggle out of it. Nice try by wikipedia too. "Irregardless" does not appear in my Concise Oxford Dictionary and my Webster's doesn't have it either.
