  1. The Hawkins set is not available for pre-order yet, so there's nothing about it on their site. The discography was provided directly by Mosaic. I got it a couple of months ago when I asked them about it; at the time they asked me not to post it because it wasn't final yet - apparently it is now.
  2. I think this thread is about the Stan Kenton set The Complete Capitol Recordings of the Holman and Russo Charts (Mosaic MD4-136), not about the Kenton Presents Bob Cooper, Bill Holman and Frank Rosolino set (Mosaic MD4-185).
  3. But then there's the career of his running buddy Al Cohn, who was very good in the '50s and '60s and then just got better and better and stronger and stronger, at times almost amazingly so (especially rhythmically), right up until the very end and without undergoing any profound stylistic change or absorbing any "advanced" influences. Thus it's not like I'm holding Zoot up to some imaginary or elitist standard. I agree with Larry about Al Cohn. I like many of his 1950s recordings, but I think he was much better and indeed stronger in his last 10-15 years. Pity most of his later stuff is not available on CD.
  4. Dangit! I always get it wrong; I went back and edited my posts, but I can't help but wonder how I got the name right in the thread title but misspelled it everywhere else? Unless, of course, someone changed the title for me, for which I offer thanks! I think the thread title was corrected, initially it said "Schapp". I wonder if Mr Schaap is of Dutch descent, his name means "sheep" in Dutch In Dutch the "ch" is pronounced like the "ch" in the Scottish word "Loch".
  5. I have just listened to those tracks on my system (Mark Levinson, Quad ESL) and there's no problem - I also have the European version.
  6. The name is Schaap, not Schapp.
  7. Don't worry. It will be back in print as a bionic implant in about a decade or so. An avant-garde tinnitus.
  8. MM's posts do remind me of Clem's, same "style".
  9. Sad news.
  10. If I didn't already have the older CD, that would be a reason for me not to get it
  11. "The dissection of Mr Boatner". Could be the title of a film noir.
  12. You'll have to explain that, Lon. No idea who Barbara Walters is! Barbara Walters
  13. The prices private sellers on the various Amazon sites are asking for this CD are ridiculous, the Mosaic set is cheaper... Good luck!
  14. There are about 270 copies left of the Onzy Matthews.
  15. BBC obit
  16. Not that it solves anything, on the contrary, but Michel Ruppli's discography "The Aladdin/Imperial Labels" (Greenwood Press, 1991) gives this info, which is roughly the same as the earlier discographical data provided by Bruyninckx et al: WYNONIE "Mr. BLUES" HARRIS AND HIS ALL STARS: Wynonie Harris (vo) with unidentified orchestra (similar to November 30, 1946 session). NYC, July , 1947 A-4025-3 You got to get yourself a job girl Aladdin 208; Route 66 (sd) KIX-20 A-4026-1 Hard ridin' mama - ; - A-4027-1 Big city blues Aladdin 196; Route 66 (Sd) KIX-3 A-4028-1 Ghost of a chance - ; Route 66 (Sd) KIX-30 I guess the discography in the biography is the most trustworthy for the reasons Steve mentioned.
  17. No brainer. Unmissable ! (or you could take the Strata-East vinyl route) another vote for the Tolliver. marvellous stuff. If you're at all tempted, then jump A great set, highly recommended!
  18. A heads up: several Mosaic sets and a couple of Mosaic Singles are running low. One Mosaic Single is on the last chance list.
  19. No Select? Well, I hope they will still be doing something with the Lucky Thompson material. I spoke with Fred at Mosaic a few weeks ago, and he still said that a Coleman Hawkins set (7cd?) and a Lucky Thompson would be out before the end of the year...well, keep us updated. Did I hallucinate or was there a post saying there was to be a big box of LT material ?? I would certainly like an LT Big Box! The Coleman Hawkins box is scheduled for release in November and it will have 7 CDs. As for Lucky Thompson, there will be no box in 2011. A big Chick Webb/Ella Fitzgerald box is planned for 2012.
  20. Don't panic, there'll be lots more sets
  21. There'll be no Lucky Thompson Select. More news to follow later.
  22. I have the "old" 1988 McMaster CD, Pacific Jazz CDP 7 46850 2; haven't listened to it in ages.
  23. AMG review (for what it's worth)
  24. I have to respect Dan's frustration at this point. Still, I can't imagine when the pitchers and catchers report next Spring that he'll be able to refrain from a comment or two. Baseball gets in your blood. It would be awfully hard to just walk away. With respect to spitting, that's a chewing tobacco thing. If you've ever tried it (and I did once) you'll realize quickly that spitting is the only viable option. The last thing in the world you'd want to do is swallow. Trust me on this. That doesn't make it less disgusting.
  25. Spitting is ubiquitous in baseball. I know. Nobody seems to mind. Yuck.
