Are you self taught or do you have/had a teacher?

Allen, I've been thinking about this phrase for the past few days. Can you explain to me what it means to you? Thanks! -
I think Mike is right. He is a keys player.

I think I remember you talking about the Stanton Moore album ALL KOOKED OUT. Walter plays on that, along with Charlie Hunter and Skerik. I don't have the album, but I think Michael Ray even pops up on it. Go here and listen to collaborations between Stanton Moore and Robert Walter. I have that Twentieth Congress album.

The vanguard of a revolution? Ok, wow.

He's been discussed here before. Well-known among fans of the "jam band". Plays with Stanton Moore, members of Greyboy Allstars, etc. What are you listening to?

I just made a purchase on amazon last night. This book has been recommended to me by other vibists and I finally decided it would be a good idea to start looking at it. Hopefully it won't focus too much on grip, since I was taught a different grip than the Burton grip that Saindon uses. Here's another book that I work out of from time to time, less so now than a few years ago. -
She is very impressive, to me, on the George Schuller disc that arrived yesterday. I posted an image in the "Now Listening" thread, even though I wasn't actually listening to it when I posted. I'll be sure to post more thoughts in the "Yo Miles!" thread some other time.

And that's ok with you? That the labels are in full concurrence? What about the musicians? Do they get any say regarding the sale price of the album, or is there a clause on page 52 that reads "Sale price may vary anywhere between $17.49 and $5.99 within the first 6 months of release." What is this about? Musicians getting paid for their work or marketers getting paid for theirs? yourmusic.com cuts the price of an album in half, sometimes by 2/3. Do you feel good about that? Do you feel good about the musicians receiving a fraction of the original profit? I bet you've taken that into account already when projecting your quarterly revenue, though. And I'm sure your algorithm also takes into account the fact that a percentage of the musicians' listening audience will not actually pay for the music at all. Which is why you've decided to market the product through yourmusic.com in the first place. It isn't cannabalism at all, now is it? It is survival. Otherwise, there'll be a lot of discs in the cut-out bin next month. I don't know as much about the music business as you guys do, or put on to know. I'm just thinking out loud here. I'm a real live consumer, and I copy music, I sell used cds, I buy used cds, I give cds to my friends, I get cds from my friends. I download from emusic.com, itunes.com, dime. I buy from indie shops, I buy from online megas, I buy from online indies, I buy from labels, I buy from musicians, I buy from merch tables in the back of the club. I buy dusty lps, I still own dubbed cassettes. I am an insatiable consumer and I don't think I'm going to slow down anytime soon, regardless of some thin guilt trip. You assume I am talking about myself. I am not that unique though. I am the target market. BTW, my brother is a musician. He hasn't worked a "straight job" in his life. He sends me mp3s all the time. How else am I going to learn about Willie Rosario? OK, now I am talking about myself.

How does a site like yourmusic.com work into your equation? Is it ok to buy an album six months after release at clearance prices, or should I buy everything I want to hear for $17.49 the day it comes out? Maybe I should buy three copies of every album I purchase from yourmusic.com just to be sure that every musician I want to sample gets their due. I knew this board was comprised of altruistic do-rights, but I am really not believing this one. now playing: burnt copy of Ikue Mori MYRNINEREST sounds great! I am going to order some Mephista next week. I thought they were fantastic live. Worth every penny. Drinks were overpriced, but I paid for them anyway.

I'm not sure what I should do. Maybe take piano lessons. It isn't easy finding a vibraphone teacher. I was able to find a vibist that I could identify with up in Boston and had a few lessons with him. I've got the basic technique down, as well as a few bad habits I'm sure, but I don't know where to go next. I've been learning sheet music one measure at a time and I really think I should pick up and study some technique books. I get the opportunity to play with my brother every so often, which is great, but I feel like he is doing all the work. I get lost and he'll make it sound ok by following me. I should take advantage of the situation and turn it into a lesson more than a jam. He is a great teacher, but our time is always limited and it always feels great to just play. There's my biggest problem, and I've mentioned this to Jim Sangrey before. DISCIPLINE. -
Anything in the Mid-Atlantic? Southern Atlantic? I'm parched for good live music down here. Thanks for the disc by the way! Great!

Wynton Marsalis itunes exclusive

I just took a look at the itunes site to see how effective the Wynton ad has been. "Sparks" is not on the top 10 downloads list, or the top 100 downloads list, but is has made today's top 10 jazz downloads list. Then again, What a Wonderful World (Single) is on there three times... As far as complete album sales are concerned, the live session featuring "Sparks" tops the list, followed by Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall. I'd be curious to see some numbers behind the rankings, i.e. sales dollars. The Marsalis could have been downloaded twice, while the other nine on the top ten were all downloaded once. Who knows. -

Hey Dmitry, maybe you could pull up footage of Ornette on SNL now that you've found the Ra? -

I've seen plenty of print advertising for jazz music though. I've even seen print advertising using jazz musicians as the spokesperson. What was that ad someone brought up a while back... Threadgill and a bottle of booze? I can't remember. I am wondering if there is any precedent for television advertising of jazz music. -

Beautiful website. You can probably click around for hours. I will definitely come back to that. -
I had a track from Buttermilk Channel on my Blindfold Test. Everyone seemed to like that one quite a bit. Great disc all the way through.
