  1. I just took a look at the itunes site to see how effective the Wynton ad has been. "Sparks" is not on the top 10 downloads list, or the top 100 downloads list, but is has made today's top 10 jazz downloads list. Then again, What a Wonderful World (Single) is on there three times... As far as complete album sales are concerned, the live session featuring "Sparks" tops the list, followed by Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall. I'd be curious to see some numbers behind the rankings, i.e. sales dollars. The Marsalis could have been downloaded twice, while the other nine on the top ten were all downloaded once. Who knows.
  2. Hey Dmitry, maybe you could pull up footage of Ornette on SNL now that you've found the Ra?
  3. I've seen plenty of print advertising for jazz music though. I've even seen print advertising using jazz musicians as the spokesperson. What was that ad someone brought up a while back... Threadgill and a bottle of booze? I can't remember. I am wondering if there is any precedent for television advertising of jazz music.
  4. Beautiful website. You can probably click around for hours. I will definitely come back to that.
  5. "In addition, Mitchell and Bowie were among the first post-modern improvisers. (Jaki Byard was ahead of them by five years.) " What are they referring to here? Glad to see the complete Nessa catalog listed online.
  6. I had a track from Buttermilk Channel on my Blindfold Test. Everyone seemed to like that one quite a bit. Great disc all the way through.
  7. Its not just you Allen...
  8. Here's a link, for those of you who haven't been watching tv for the past two days. I've seen this commercial about four times now. Click heya.
  9. I'm not talking about the topic, but the content. Your momma? Sorry, I just have a difficult time understanding personal attacks via a web message board. I don't even know why I'm getting involved here. A part of me wants to be sympathetic toward people that get so wrapped up in it, but I can't.
  10. So that's what this was all about. This thread should never have been started in the first place. I guess we all have different opinions of a message board's value. I'm pretty sure the majority of the members at this message board would agree that this thread is way outside of what organissimo is about.
  11. wow.
  12. up. Has anyone seen this? Nice presentation, I must say. Are there any other examples of jazz music being advertised through television spots? I honestly never thought I'd see something like this. Someone must think that jazz is a viable market afterall, regardless of format. Very timely considering the recent backlash on CD-R and downloads.
  13. Are you sure that was Goldings? I know Smoker appeared on a live Soul Note recording under drummer Phil Haynes' leadership (I think the title is Live Insurgency) with Jeff Palmer on organ. I don't know if Smoker and Goldings ever appeared on a recording together. That's it. So, not only was it not a Paul Smoker album, Larry Golidngs wasn't the b-3 player. Wow. Should have looked around a little bit. I'm going to have to buy another copy of that somehow.
  14. Last year's Matt Wilson Arts & Crafts recording was also fantastic. I really like Goldings. Does anybody have the Soul Note album he did with Paul Smoker? I wish I could find that damn disc. Trumpet, b-3, drum kit. Hard as hell.
  15. Of course it had to be Wynton, but I was sort of pleased to see advertising dollars go toward a television spot for jazz music. Are there other examples of this? I've certainly never seen a tv spot pushing jazz music.
  16. I like this disc. I do remember the bass being mixed way back though. Great price, that's for sure.
  17. I don't know... tough call. They serve as two very different bands for him, judging from the couple of shows that I've seen. He is still pushing himself, which is a good thing. Seeing him in his late teenage years, he was constantly frustrated that his hands wouldn't move the way he wanted, or so it seemed. Every once in a while, watching him, I still get that feeling. Great slide player, for sure.
  18. Jim, I thought that Live at the Meat House was always a CD-R release. I'm guessing now that it wasn't?
  19. Thanks for posting that Dmitry. Everytime I see that re-run on tv, they edit out the Arkestra performance, but they're all standing there at the closing credits! I can imagine that threw a lot of people for a loop that night.
  20. I am glad it is live, too. Steve Lake / Manfred Eicher could have sucked the energy out of this one in one way or another. Can't wait to hear it!
  21. This is a double disc? When was this recorded? Do you have more details?
  22. Thanks for bringing this back up! Just ordered a copy. I'll let you know what I think. I'm looking forward to hearing it.
  23. Website Seems the "merch" link isn't working though...
  24. Go find a copy of GRAND UNIFICATION. Milford's notes are fascinating.
