It's not primitive... A horse drawn plow isn't entirely primitive either Mike. I think you've missed my point. I guess I should have said "Beyond 'primitive', like a horse and plow." If you are comparing a mortar and pestle with a Cuisinart, it is fair to describe the mortar and pestle as primitive. These two devices are not entirely interchangeable however. In my mind, the mortar and pestle is just as brilliant, if not moreso, than the electric-powered machine that came centuries later. Is a horse drawn plow less brilliant, or less innovative than a tractor plow? I still think the horse drawn plow is the real innovation. Still, to find a cropper using a horse drawn plow in the age of Industry would seem primitive. This music is the equivalent of a horse drawn plow in a world of tractors. To me, anyway. A lot of the music coming from this region of the United States, even to this day, is primitive when compared to its contemporary. In my mind, this doesn't make it any less valuable, or enjoyable.

What artist did you discover for the first time in 2005?

Peruchin! Holy smoke! What a pianist! What a musician! -
I'll throw in an endorsement for the MENTAL CRUELTY disc, and for the COUNTRY BRASS disc that Jim has well-described. It is an alter-reality in music. Primitive, like a horse and plow. Still curious about the Hamid Drake criticism. Bennink sure seems to be a fan. I don't hear much to criticize personally, unless its a matter of taste. He certainly isn't a one-trick pony, though O'Neal's Porch-style pocket seems to be his main bag. I've passed on that Mount Everest disc so many times, and I always wish I hadn't. Every time. Next time I see it, I'll have to grab it. Y'all convinced me!

I'm going to pull this out again tomorrow and listen back with the answers. Thanks Roo! Good disc as I remember it. Happy New Year.

My father in law is interested in the Verizon wireless service for his 12" Power Book. Apparently, the Power Book does not have a slot for the wireless card. Do any of you have any experience with this service? I am told that it is perfectly compatible with Macs. I have posted to the Apple forums as well, but I know you guys are just as knowledgeable. Thanks!

Thanks soul stream! You know, I played that Hamp tribute last night. My in-laws were in town. It actually sounded really good. Right occassion I guess. I have been interested in Feelin' Good since your original post and it keeps slipping my mind. Thanks for bringing this back up!

I have another Gibbs/Defrancesco album that I haven't really gotten into much. A TRIBUTE TO LIONEL HAMPTON. Has anyone heard this? How would you compare the music between FEELIN' GOOD and A TRIBUTE? Thanks.

Boy am I glad I don't have my own Organissimo site. And could you imagine if I were to go around recommending their new album to people that I hardly know? Hey, you like that new Guarini CD? You HAVE to check out an album called THIS IS THE PLACE by Organissimo. Trust me. I think you'll like it. Tell your friends too. This kid might actually like REAL jazz music. She's seventeen. She doesn't know any better. You guys are ridiculous sometimes. Maybe a counter-recommendation would be in order. Try this album. I think you might like it. It is different from the Guarini CD, but I think you might be open to it. Don't mind them too much. Happy listening.

Why? It looks like an independent release. This guy could have made a pop album and sold thousands and thousands of copies. Instead, he recorded a (stretch, gulp) jazz album. I'm not going to defend the music, because I think it is lacking. I just don't understand what you would have against someone releasing an album of standards and jazz-styled songs with working musicians. I don't care what happens with this album, I don't care if this guy goes on to become a LV lounge act. I really don't have a dog in this race. Do you? Why so much flack? Let it go. I have a feeling this disc will probably disappear into obscurity, like most bad and GOOD jazz albums do, come to think of it.

My mom has this. She played it for my brother and I over Christmas. "You won't believe who this is..." Um, yeah, I probably will. Wait, is it someone I went to school with? No? Huh, an American Idol finalist? No, you're right. I wouldn't have believed that an AI star would attempt a jazz album. After half a tune, it really kicks in. Leave this type of thing to the jazz singers. I'm sure this guy will find his audience. It certainly isn't here, and you can't blame him for trying.

I still wonder how this music sounded in context with its contemporaries at the time of original release. I approach a lot of my music this way. A lot has happened since then and it still sounds at the forefront to me.

I'll second this one.

This is the first time I've seen the John Handy recording mentioned here. Worth it for their version of Naima alone. This is a beautiful ensemble. I could stand another half-hour of these guys sounding on Naima.

Hey, I've seen friends take a 50% raise, only to find out the company they went on to work for was no more within a year. Not that this is going to happen with the Empire, but there is a lesson here. There ARE other things to consider. What would Organissimo do for another 30% in revenue annually? Its one thing to go to another team, but to go from the Red Sox to the Yankees? Cold. Hearted. Bastard. Wipe that smile off your face Damon. How could you do it? Of all of them, I would never have predicted that Damon would go to the Yanks. Wow. -
Apologies...
