I think this is a killer session that only solidifies as the sequence progresses. I love to listen to this in my car at high volume. I was a little shocked the first time through "Mothership," the title track. Lee Morgan's solo seems a little weak to me. He comes out of Herbert Morgan's solo with a mimic and seems to lose his momentum and eventually his confidence. I'm not a musician, so I could be missing something, but the tune loses some steam when Lee plays there. Again, I am loving this session! I want more Larry Young.

I had a bloody mary while supervising the turkey-fry, followed by a glass of Gumdale Merlot with the meal, followed by a couple of Yuenglings while learning Madden 2004 on PS2, a couple of Miller Lites, a game of 8 ball, and a game of dirty cricket. I think I like video games. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. A good day it was.

One of the first "jazz" CDs I ever owned. I lent it out three or four years ago and haven't heard it since. This just reminds me how much I miss it. I'll have to make an order soon!

The Shocking Return!

I love the vibraphone. That album Joe mentions sounds very cool! I don't really have any additional recommendations, but there are thousands of solo, duo, trio, etc classical/modern classical vibraphone recordings that I have not yet heard. For whatever reason, I've been hesitant for the past few years. I have a decent sized catalog from Steve Weiss Music, I think. Gregg Bendian is one percussionist that I intend to explore further. I know his name and his playing through recordings with Cecil Taylor(drum kit), the Cline brothers(INTERZONE-vibraphone) , and modern classical works with other percussionists and mallets players. I would also love to hear an album under John McIntire's name (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, production for Stereolab and many others), focusing on his mallet work, drumming, and electronics prowess. Sam Prekop's solo album was so great, I'm still waiting for a follow-up! I think an album from John would be wonderful.

I was just reminded of THE FRESHMAN, starring Matthew Broderick and Brando. What was the name of the "practically extinct" meat eating dining club?

I'm not sure if I have my terminology correct. I will try to explain though. I am listening to the K2 remaster. It sounds beautiful. The piano is in the right channel, bass in front of the left channel, and kit in the back of the left channel, as I hear it. It dawned on me that when I was there last December, the Geri Allen trio set up exactly opposite. Geri was to the left, Billy Hart to the right, and Buster Williams right of center. I am wondering if piano trios generally set up one way or the other at the Vanguard? Or is the Bill Evans recording inaccurate in this respect? Thanks.

That is a good disc, Blues... unfortunately, every disc after this that I have heard from Kenny Garrett has been a little soft. Some decent tracks on Pursuance, but I think I owe that to Metheny's guitar tones!

Those Spaceways Inc. albums didn't stick with me for some reason. I can't remember why. I kind of wish I had them so I could go back and listen again. I'll recommend another V5 recording, ACOUSTIC MACHINE. Recorded in 2001, 2+ years after Simpatico, ACOUSTIC MACHINE is a another series of dedications to musicians (Shepp, Getz, Prez, Hemphill, Elvin Jones, and others), with short compositions dedicated to Morton Feldman interspersed.

That was my next recommendation! I was waiting for Al Jones to drop in with this one. Here's another one I think he'd recommend! Brötzmann (reeds), Kessler (bass), Drake (drums)

Almost a household name at this point, but I always thought "The Flaming Lips" was an interesting band name. Pretty Girls Make Graves is an awesome name. Yes, named after The Smiths' song. They rock. Neutral Milk Hotel is also a good one.

This is one of my favorite combinations as well. Knowing your taste, and having a sense of what you already own, one of my favorites that most people don't seem to have in their collection is THE FRINGE .:. Its Time for the Fringe | Soul Note | April 1992 George Garzone (reeds), John Lockwood (bass), Bob Gullotti (drums). This was recorded live during the Rodney King riots. All three of these musicians have a great command over their instruments and play extremely well together. I have the good fortune of being able to go watch Gullotti work the drum kit every Tuesday night here in Providence, RI. I don't see his name too often, but he's the most impressive drummer I have seen in person yet. All Music lists this as "fusion." I have no idea where they came up with that label, so don't let it fool you. This is NOT "fusion." Another of my favorites that can stand to be recommended one more time is WILLIAM PARKER TRIO .:. Painter's Spring | Thirsty Ear | June 2000 Daniel Carter (reeds), William Parker (bass), Hamid Drake (drums).
