The Beastie BOYS, they are they comin' home, they comin home, aww they comin home. Sorry. I listened to Check Your Head twice this week. Hey Brandon, I thought Big Youth was the best thing I ever heard first time I listened to Screaming Target. It might not have the staying power it once did, but I'm wondering if you could recommend other DJ recordings that I might like. -
Moondog, Would you consider him jazz?

Whoa. This dude is entirely new to me! I want to know everything. Alright guys, come on. Let me in. This isn't funny anymore. I want to see what's inside. -
I'm not sure I understand the price point. You can have a 10GB iPod for $299. I just did the math in my head and that's like $50 and 6 extra GBs.

What can you guys tell me about Terry Gibbs' music? I guess I always imagined that it wasn't my cup of tea. The name, for whatever reason, has a neutral-to-negative-neutral connotation in my mind. Hoooo-eva, a friend recommended this band to me last night while listening to another, unrelated big band recording. I'm a big fan of vibes (never imagined Terry Gibbs to be my kind of vibes playing) and music that is a little rough around the edges. These are words that my friend used to describe this band. Whattaya know?

Info regarding "One Night With Blue Note"
.:.impossible replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Makes you wonder why they didn't release it this way in the first place. Maybe next month they'll release the complete performance! -
I haven't, but I did stumble across an album by composer Gavin Bryars that features a piece dedicated and written for Charlie Haden. The album is called FAREWELL TO PHILOSOPHY and the composition in titled "By The Vaar." It is definitely worth the $1.99 I spent on it, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Features a piece for Julian Lloyd Webber, a piece for Nexus (percussion quintet), and the Haden piece. Of the three, I find the Nexus piece most interesting. Haden plays well and the recording really picks up the sound of his instrument, but the boredom that the accompaniment contributes to the piece does a great job of cancelling most of the enthusiasm I have for this piece. Unfortunate.

Thanks Lazaro. Sounds like something I'd be interested in. Cool story about Lucky Thompson too! Wow. -
NFL playoffs Dallas v.s. Carolina

As a former Charlottean, I have been a Panthers fan since the beginning. This will be the best team they have seen in a long time. John Fox is the man and Delhomme is proving to be a great team leader as well. I don't consider him a great quarterback, but he sure as hell ain't afraid to stick his neck out. He is a great competitor and has won more than a handful of games for the team this season by doing just that. Fantastic is a tough one. For a team to put up 380 yards against the top-rated defense in the league in a Playoff game is pretty fantastic. The average gain per carry was somewhere around 6 yards. To top that off, they were penalty free, on offense AND defense! The offensive line allowed only one sack. Did I mention this is the top-rated defense in the league? Did I mention this is a Playoff game? Stephen Davis (WAR EAGLES!) rushed for over a hundred yards. Mus and Steve Smith went for over a hundred each. Peppers ran an interception for over 30. Kicking was flawless. Sauerbraun and Kasay are automatic. Ok, so Kasay had one bad game in his career, and it was this season. The guy is forgiven. You just have to shrug your shoulders on that one. 3 sacks, two for almost 10 yard losses each, 3 separate players. Almost fantastic, at least? Bring it on St. Louis. Either quarterback is fine. Cowboys, see ya next year! -
Mal Waldron: Git Go & Seagulls of Kristiansundi
.:.impossible replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I'm the same way John! Maybe Mal Waldron is and acquired taste? Seagulls was actually one of the first "serious" jazz albums I heard back in college. At least, it seemed "serious" at the time and made a "serious" impression on myself and my brother, who owns the album. We bought it for the Woody Shaw + Mal Waldron factor + Charlie Rouse + Reggie Workman + Edward Blackwell factor. Maybe focusing on Mal + Reggie + Edward Blackwell will reveal the strength of this recording. -
Sounds like you are building quite a bridge gdogus! As you have begun to introduce electric keyboards into the mix, I think it is important at this point to introduce the electric guitar into your Miles survey. Miles In the Sky 1968 is on your list. I find this album to be the album that spans the gap better than any other single album in the catalog. It doesn't seem to get much attention here for whatever reason, but it has been a long time since we've discussed Miles' music... I'd like to hear your opinion as to how this album fits into the grander scheme that you are currently looking at. The other track that I think is essential to your purpose is Circle In The Round 1967. As a stand-alone track, this may be the skeleton key that you are looking for.

That STN article was in issue 29 | spring 2003. A good interview. The same issue also "strongly recommends" the latest Califone disc, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, on Thrill Jockey. Definitely recommended from this listener as well! Thanks for the link to the Leo Smith website!

Every so often, as I peruse the many volumes of allmusic.com, I will come across some very strange recommendations in the similar/related albums section. I'm not sure what sort of algorhythm determines similar/related albums, but it must be something like the BCS. Here's one. I was looking at Erik Satie .:. Piano Works, Vol. 1 "First and Last Works" / Piano Works, Vol. 2 "Mystical Works" / Pia. Among the recommedations, all of them a little far fetched, I see David Coverdale .:. Whitesnake/Northwinds. THE David Coverdale??? Post your finds heya.

If anyone can do it, its Snoop. He's got more cross-over appeal than anyone in the history of pop culture. Everyone loves the dee oh double G!

That's it Randy, but with a bellowing voice. Not enough range to be cutesy.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan... and let me reiterate, I love this bar.

I have purposely avoided that site for the same reason DoubleM. I logged in once or twice a while back and again after his death to read the dedications. Ted Leo posted a nice dedication to Elliott on his site, dated Oct 22: October 22, 2003 Almost ten years ago, my old band, Chisel, was on our first full US tour. Nothing west of Chicago was particularly well attended, but that never really gets me down -- I try to keep hopes up but expectations low. Anyway, what was getting me down, was a certain lack of respect I was often feeling from people in a lot of places, which reached a real boiling point in Portland, Or., at a place called the "O," where we were being treated less than kindly by the promoter. It was summer, and very very hot inside the club. We attracted about 20 people that night, and played a pretty ripping set, if I remember correctly, during which I asked the promoter if I could have one of the 7-Ups he was selling for a quarter each from a cooler at the back of the room. He said, "For a quarter!" I thought he was joking, but he wasn't. I sputtered through the sweat dripping down my face and across my mouth, "Well... Can't I pay you after we're done playing? Can't you take it out of our pay?" He just stared at me, then made some quip about, "What pay?" Which, since we'd only drawn 20 people, was a legitimate question, granted, but I was kind of dumbfounded -- I couldn't believe that he was going to not only NOT offer me a soda for busting my ass on stage, but was going to embarrass me in this way in front of an audience that was actually there to see us as well. I had a serious existential crisis at that moment. What the fuck am I doing here? Why am I giving it up in this way every night? Why are people so petty in their power struggles? Is this all there is? Just then, a person stepped out from the 20 person crowd, put a quarter in the promoter's hand, and walked the soda up to me on stage. It's largely due to that small gesture that I'm still playing music today, and in years to come, I got to know that person better, and count him as a friend. That person was Eliot Smith. And though I know he's now free from the very real demons that were gnawing at him... Man, I think I'm going to miss him very very much. My love to his other friends and family, and my love to you all. Spare a thought for Eliot today.

Yeah, sorry. I was trying to be sarcastic.

I've bought quite a few Flaming Lips albums over the years. Talk about a band that has aged gracefully. I'd love to hear Zaireeka, but I can never justify the cost when I see it in store!

Case Logic books seem to be perfectly safe for storing CDs. I have been using them since I bought my first CD player, in middle school! First CD you ask? Kid and Play. Can't think of the album title. I held onto it through most of high school. When I let that thing go, it flew at least 40 yards. Seriously, Case Logics are great for traveling. I keep most of my CDRs in these books.

That dude needs to be punched in the face. Hard. From a physical standpoint he's a rather large package. Maybe we can see what Lennox Lewis is up to. I'm missing something here.... Who is Toby Keith?? He sings that song, "I Love This Bar." He is all over the television. He is a mammoth. Here he is playing Pro U.S.A.-style guitar. He is an innovator in this particular style.

Jewel Case Creator Software...
.:.impossible replied to street singer's topic in Miscellaneous Music
MSWord is probably your most economical solution. I use Quark XPress 4.1, but it is much more expensive software than MSOffice.
