  1. I really like this disc. The first track is great to me because I don't have any other Rollins music that sounds anything like it. Maybe because it just wasn't his thing. I don't know. Still waiting to hear the European tour with Cherry! Some day... Another reason I love the first track is because Trane's rhythm section ends up in a space totally unfamiliar to fans of the Coltrane Quartet! I just sit back and wonder what they could have sounded like had they explored this music with John! The other tracks are very nice. Loooooooooooooooose loose loose. We Kiss In A Shadow took me a long time to get into because it is so loose. Now it is one of my favorite stand alone tracks. I remember putting it on a mix tape for my brother one time just because it fit. This was before I truly enjoyed it!
  2. NO! Please tell me he didn't cut his hair! PLEASE!!! I'm not sure I can handle this situation. Back when he was cool... I now renounce the http://www.saintaardvarkthecarpeted.com/im...hael_bolton.jpg
  3. Dmitry, Here's a link to a previous thread re: Boston area. Keep an eye on rootdown. blahblahblah What are your plans while in Boston?
  4. I always thought this would be a good idea. I came up with a list of past performances once while doing some searching. The list was actually more interesting than I had expected. I'd love to see what Sun Ra's Arkestra did. Same with Ornette!
  5. I saw them on a weekend morning show a few months back. The music was very "difficult" for lack of a better term. I expected something much more repetitive. I have friends from all backgrounds who are recommending this group to me. My brother and his musicians and even friends who don't necessarily consider themselves jazz fans tell me this is a great disc. The hype spun me the wrong way apparently because I still haven't checked them out.
  6. That is beautiful e-doubles. -_-
  7. I've been following, though I didn't sign up for #1. Maybe sometime in the future. I didn't even realize there was any malevolence here, but I guess that's because I stay away from the political forum. I think this is a great idea and commend Tony et al for pulling it off! Very cool!
  8. Tonic Calendar for September It looks like John Zorn is turning 50 this month and he is celebrating with a full month at Tonic. This weekend, Painkiller is playing two sets on both Friday and Saturday night and Hamid Drake is at the kit! On Monday, Zorn is performing a duet with Milford Graves! I have the recording from FIMAV 1999 and these two get off! The Gift on Thursday. Bar Kokbha next weekend. Masada Guitars the third week, Xu Feng... 9/22 looks like a good night too! Duets with Ibarra and Wadada Leo Smith. Wow.
  9. I like the sound of this! I don't think I've ever seen it before... Nope. Definitely not. I don't even rememeber this album cover being posted on a board before!
  10. How is 'Bout Soul? I was listening to Demon's Dance the other day and it dawned on me what a great pair McLean and Shaw made together. Other than a few live recordings from the 80s, Demon's Dance and 'Bout Soul seem to be the only two available pairings. Looks good to me... From http://www16.brinkster.com/fitzgera/woody/...eptember-8-1968 Van Gelder Studio, New Jersey; September 8, 1968 WS - tp; Grachan Moncur III - tb; Jackie McLean - as; Lamont Johnson - p; Scotty Holt - dr; Barbara Simmons - voc. 1.Soul 10:15 2.Conversion Point 9:45 3.Big Ben's Voice 10:06 4.Big Ben's Voice 9:55 5.Erdu 5:54 Jackie McLean -- 'Bout Soul (CD) Jackie McLean -- 'Bout Soul (LP): tracks 1-3,5 various artists -- Blue Break Beats vol. 3: track 1(?) The poetry of Ms. Simmons on track "Soul" makes for a quaint period piece. Other tracks are aggressive, energetic hard bop in line with McLean's other late 60's recordings.
  11. That is the question. Now I have another question. I wonder what the retailer's rights really are. They buy the disc at retailer costs, so their rights of ownership are probably different than the end-user. I wonder if the end-user has the right to sell and resell his/her property, assuming a CD would be considered his/her property after purchase. I don't know anything about this stuff. I think it is wrong either way. Sometimes, if I think too much about buying used CDs, I think the whole thing is wrong. So it is...
  12. I don't think that is a very fair way of setting it up Rooster. Maybe you are misinterpreting me. I see a huge difference between the video and CD market. Once a film has been out in theatres and made its millions, it is subsequently released on video format for home use. A secondary form of revenue streams. I am under the impression, by now, that rock bands for instance, make all of their money on the road. In most cases, the margin on recordings for a band is very little. I seem to remember Chuck Nessa posting a typical cost-analysis model, or something to that effect, here on the board. I have to say it again, as long as they aren't re-wrapping these as new discs, this is nothing different than what most of my favorite locals have been doing for years. For years, I have been buying new and used vinyl and compact discs. If I want to sell a new CD back, I am going to get $4.99. If I want to sell a CD that I bought USED, I am going to get $4.99. That is common policy. I guess $4.99 is the magic number. Maybe someone with some record store experience can address this thread. I am simply thinking out loud here. ......... In your post above, you are selling ONE copy of the Organissimo CD a couple dozen times as a new disc? Is this what the store in question is doing? That is my question. I have no problem with the blindfold test. In fact, I think it would be a lot of fun to participate in. Out of print or not, we are ripping and burning copyright music, aren't we? I am not that familiar with the laws on this. There seems to be a lot of grey area. "Fair use" seems to be a vague term that second year law students could debate for an entire semester. I will talk to a friend of mine who is studying intellectual property law. Maybe he can shed some light on the subject. Would it be different if we were posting .shn files for download instead of sending multiple cdrs across the country? How does that change the scenario? It would obviously be more cost effective! Look, I don't burn cds for money. I don't post on these boards asking people for cdrs of out-of-print material. I rarely even burn cds for friends. Most of the cdrs I own are live music recordings. I am simply questioning the limits of the law in this particular scenario. In the process, thinking out loud, and trying to initiate discussion on the merits of other possible "file sharing" practices. In an age of subscription download services, .99 downloads, file-sharing networks, and a cd burner in every new computer being sold in the United States, I'm sure this is the type of thing that industry execs are discussing on a daily basis.
  13. I understand. It is their wording. They should be more coy! Maybe "Buy It... Try It... RIP it... Get $4.99 back when you return it." As long as they aren't re-wrapping these as new discs, this is nothing different than what most of my favorite locals have been doing for years. Hey, if you're going to advertise, you might as well go all out! A full page ad that does the thinking for you... a novel idea. BTW, doesn't the organissimo blindfold test violate copyright law?
  14. BAGPIPES???
  15. The home video industry has been doing something similar for years. The system is more refined, the cost is less, and it is called renting. I do have a problem with a store re-wrapping an album and calling it new though. How do you feel about the used CD market?
  16. I haven't posted to this list in a while. Jazz: Wayne Shorter .:. The All Seeing Eye | I don't think I've listened to this album since a few months after its re-release! Genesis. Organissimo .:. Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters | This disc sort of stays in our player for weeks at a time. Life Wish is such an amazing song guys. Jason Moran .:. the Bandwagon | Trying to spur some discussion in the new releases thread. If you've heard this, let's hear what you think. Greg Osby .:. Symbols of Light (A Solution) | Decided it was time I pull this one back out after listening to the Bandwagon numerous times. I actually appreciate this disc more now than I did when I originally bought it. At the time, I didn't think the strings really added much. That has since changed. Mat Maneri featuring Joe McPhee .:. Sustain | Album of the Week a couple of weeks ago. See lack of discussion here. Jackie McLean .:. Demon's Dance | Is there a remaster for this album anywhere in sight? McLean and Shaw and DeJohnette! 1967 MEAN McLean. Dave Douglas .:. Freak In | I still haven't given this disc "proper" time. I doesn't even seem to be the right sound for my mood. Bobby Hutcherson .:. Patterns | Spurred from a discussion elsewhere on the board. Medeski, Martin, and Wood .:. Tonic | After listening to the Bandwagon numerous times... Andrew Hill .:. Smokestack | I had to hear those two bassists weaving in and out on my new speakers. Rock Califone .:. Quicksand/Cradlesnakes | Definitely my album of the year. I will post a nice review here sometime. I think this music would be in many boardmembers interest. There is a review in the latest issue of Signal To Noise that I think does a pretty damn good job, if you are interested. The Sea and Cake .:. One Bedroom | The latest release is always my favorite from this group. I can't wait to hear another Sam Prekop solo album too much longer. Neil Michael Haggerty & the Howling Hex .:. s/t | Good, and growing on me. Formerly of Pussy Galore, he seems to have a bit of a Beefheart thing going for him at times. Definitely a guitar to be reckoned with. Half of this album was recorded in Richmond, VA. Ted Leo & The Pharmacicts .:. Hearts of Oak | Very good! The best rock recommendation I had recieved in a long time, until Al Jones recommended Dismemberment Plan .:. Emergency & I | !!!! Very cool. An excellent singer would make this band more than "indie status." Warshington DC. Velvet Underground .:. Velvet Underground | This must be a classic. I can't keep up. Candy Says just fills the room. That's enough for now, I think.
  17. Just remember Moose, this is a disc you are going to want to listen to more than once before passing it on. Sorry Wheel! Has anyone downloaded the complete intro? I wonder why they didn't include the complete intro on the album. I think it would have been a good anticipation builder. Complete Download
  18. Great. Very clear and transparent, yet a bit more aggressive than the earlier, also great but mellower Japanese 20-bit K2 remastered Victor Impulse! reissues. I have a couple of the Victor K2's (MVCJ series). I think these sound wonderful, and mellow, yes. A Love Supreme is almost TOO mellow at times, when compared to my original experience with the recording!
  19. Yeah, I didn't really want to harp on the negative, but the sound is a bit muffled. The disc is a lot quieter on my stereo than most everything else I had sitting around. Says it was recorded by "Kurt Lundvall." It definitely isn't the worst live recording in my collection! And it sure is some fly-ass-shit! I wouldn't say it is anywhere near as bad as "Banned In New York" or the Miles Plugged Nickel sets.
  20. Absolutely Rooster. He has to be one of the most forward-thinking pianists of our time. SoulStream, I haven't heard "Modernistic," so I can't really give an opinion on it. The trio does play "Planet Rock," by Afrika Bambatta, on this new disc though, and it is TIGHT! Question: Is Tarus Mateen playing "acoustic electric bass" INSTEAD of an upright now, or is he playing both? I prefer a bass viol, but there are moments where he does some things on this instrument that I don't think he could have done on the upright. I was also hoping to hear maybe just a little Fender Rhodes bleeding in here and there, but I really can't complain. This group had their balls to the wall for this recording!
  21. Has anyone else picked this up yet? I downloaded the live tracks that he posted to his site last year, but this is just amazing. There are three pieces that incorporate speech, which really bring to light an element of Jason Moran's playing that I really hadn't noticed as being such a dominate force in his approach. For those of you who know this trio, this is not a straight-ahead piano trio. This recording is definitely the most avant-garde and cutting edge of the lot. Keep on pushing it. I like where this group is heading!
  22. Thanks for the tip Rooster! The Miles shows aren't posted any longer... I imagine he has limited server space?
  23. That is one of the hippest greeting cards I've ever seen Jim!
