There were two - one on Soul Note & then a live double album on Hat. I think they're both indispensable. The Soul Note had the WOW factor for me becuase it was first, and was therefore a big surprise (besides being truly WOW in every way), but the Hat has the distinction of having longer performances, which may or may not be an advantage depending on how you look at it, but you do get to hear the ideas stretched out more. I also prefer the Soul Note, but fore the exact reason that Jim mentions. It was the one I heard first. I do actually prefer the more succinct tracks to the extended performance on Hat a lot of the time.

I still haven't heard Katanga!, but remember hearing The Fox for the first time, being blown away by Elmo Hope and Dupree Bolton, both of whom I'd never heard/heard of before. Thanks for the link! Fascinating!!!

I was just thinking today about starting a topic for the musicians in the forum... Some of my favorite memories of elementary and middle school are when working bands would come in and give a "workshop". They would talk about certain compositional devices before and after playing a piece. They would talk about certain improvisational devices before playing an example. They would then improvise freely after introducing all of these different ideas. We would all go nuts. It really was a lot of fun, and an mind-expanding experience. Actually, this didn't happen. But it does now, in the schools I used to attend. "Difficult" music being presented to fourth graders, seventh graders, you name it... the results are yet to be seen, but the reception has been very positive, both from teachers and students.

My Dad thought they were overpaid then, and thinks they are overpaid now. We watched a lot of Cubs on TV growing up. Mattingly and Ryne were my Dad's guys. He barely has a stomach for College Sports anymore. A shame, but I understand where he's coming from I suppose. My brother and I practically had to drag him into watching a Cubs game last weekend. We had the R Braves games and saw some great players come up through the club to become A Braves stars. I remember, as a kid, all the hype around David Justice. When my wife and I moved up to RI, I went to Fenway as often as possible. A few years ago, we made the mecca to Wrigley. Cubs lost, but it was all that I ever imagined. I made it to the old Camden Yard, and Fulton County Stadium as well. I've been to the theme park that the A Braves play in these days as well. Never saw Yankee Stadium from the inside and I really wished I had.

I tried connecting my laptop to the tv to stream Netflix and the results were less than satisfactory. I am toying with this idea of a Roku, or possibly a Mac Mini running Boxee, which would also allow Netflix streaming, but the quality was so poor, we stopped watching after a few minutes. On the other hand, streaming directly to my laptop has been fantastic.
