Reread my first post on the subject. This disc now has the alternate as track 5. On the old disc it was track 2. The thing that they did the same was tack on the ending of the alternate of "Saturday and Sunday", to the beginning of track 2. This translates as follows: The old disc had the ending of the alternate of Saturday and Sunday tacked to the front of the alternate of Saturday and Sunday. The new RVG has the same ending of the alternate of Saturday and Sunday again tacked to the beginning of track 2, which NOW is Frankenstein. I don't know if this means that all they are doing is tweaking old copies, but there is definitely some sort of disconnect happening at Blue Note. I knew what you meant, though I don't believe I communicated it properly. It still bugs me that Blue Note let this come out like that. I bet Swinging Swede is right on the mark in his assessment. That's what I infer from the fact that the 2000 remastering in my Japanese RVG sounds better than the 2008 remastering in the new American RVG. However, it also occurs to me that the tapes are 8 years older. Could that account for much more deterioration in sound? Who knows?

i have the old tocj of this mclean album. it does not have any alternates. is this one ok? please say, yes! a simple yes is all i need now! Let's just say that I am of the opinion that the Japanese do a much better job with cd production (better stock, beveled edges, etc.). Therefore, having a TOCJ of this album, would definitely not be a bad thing, if you get my drift. My one regret when it comes to my love of jazz is having gotten caught up in the re-re-re-re-issue craze ad infinitum. I fear it might be too late for me. But feel free to save yourself. Run, run away

Against my better judgment, I'll comment on sound issues. The sonics on this RVG, IMHO, clearly place third behind the sonics on the Japanese RVG (done in 2000) and the McMastered Moncur Select (done in 2003). Read into this what you want and take it fwiw.

Great avatar! Great minds think alike! Everyone digs Go but Our Man in Paris is my favorite Dex album...it doesn't hurt that I'm a huge Bud Powell Fan. I have an affinity for A Swingin' Affair since it was recorded on the day I was born!

That can't be right, that was the problem with the Collector's choice edition from 1995. Blue Note no longer puts the alternate takes after the master take, they are at the end of the disc. The majority of the alternate IS at the end of the disc. It's just that one minute has been lopped off and tacked onto the beginning of track 2. Sorry if I was unclear.

On another topic, it appears that the RVG of "One Step Beyond" which came out yesterday is AFU. It seems that the last minute of the alternate take of Saturday and Sunday (track 5) is placed at the beginning of Frankenstein (track 2). Yet another Blue Note boo boo!

I never heard of this having skipping problems. Mine works fine. And I have to say the 1995 version (Larry Walsh remastered) is easier to listen to than JRVG and the UK/RVG versions I heard. Mine skipped. I had to exchange it several times until I got one that worked properly. I heard of others having the same issues with their copies. I think Blue Note quietly corrected the problem.

I've got both of those, and they're both very good. Agreed! Snagged these at Tower down at 4th and Broadway in NYC. Boy, do I miss that store (sob, sob).

There are used copies on Amazon going for as little as $7.18 at the moment. That's the Connoisseur version from 1995, which had major skipping problems in the first run. I think Holy Ghost's referring to the RVG that was supposed to be released, but got held back because of our involvement in Iraq.

I hope you're kidding ... I wish I were! Talked to Wenzel this morning. Busy man, also had contact with him today He wouldn't divulge!!! All he would say was that they are awaiting clearance on a couple of things. I assume one is the 1930's Duke Columbia Big Band sides.

Around the time that show was taped Scott performed that piece as part of a concert at Town Hall put on by Down Beat , a performance which ended up on this record put out by Dot ( this is volume one of a two volume issue ) : The tune , dedicated to a singer Scott met in Johannesburg in 1957 , runs nine minutes and features nice assists from Jimmy Knepper , Kenny Burrell , Sam Jones and Paul Motian . I think it's the best peformance on the record . Don't know if it's available on CD though . I recently picked up both volumes on one Japanese cd through Amazon marketplace. Glad I did!

Due to the Universal fires, the tapes have yet to be located!

I'd say "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", but it's a 2 disc set. If you want to start smaller, try "Selling England by the Pound".

The Lucky Thompson is scheduled for release on 2/10/09.

John Handy Columbia Mosaic Select announced
JETman replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
With regard to #4, Mosaic has plans for yet another Akiyoshi/Tabackin Select which includes "Road Time" and other live recordings by that band. I had emailed them about doing Singles for "The Complete Braxton" and "Road Time". This is the response I got: We want to do another Select with Road Time and other live material by the band. We are trying to track down DA Music, the current owners of the Freedom and Black Lion labels. -

The Beatles why do they sound so different from early Rock
JETman replied to Karma Police's topic in Artists
Actually, I think what you really mean is that there are people on this board who disagree with you... I NEVER said that the Beatles were perfect or that ABBEY ROAD was my favorite or the best album ever. If you read back over my posts, I've pretty much kept my opinions (except those regarding the Stones) to myself. -

Not so (at least over here). The Beatles were the loveable face of pop music - things like 'A Taste of Honey', 'Yesterday', 'When I'm 64' etc could link to pre-rock listeners. My parents and their friends ridiculed my musical tastes but they always qualified it with 'but The Beatles are good.' Probably explains why I resisted buying Beatles albums for so long!!!! Ok, using the phrase "public opinion" was probably a little over the top. What I really meant was that the Beatles polarize the opinions of those on this board!!! -

You might say the same thing for Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starr. Save for "All Things Must Pass", none of the individual Beatles' solo material were consistently good, IMO. There were a few fantastic tracks scattered around, but nothing to make anyone think they would have done any different had they stayed together. IMO of course. Of course. But there's nothing there to make you certain that it wouldn't have been different had they stayed together. Not the point though. Music is music, and each individual listens to what he/she deems worthy. Obviously, if nothing else, the Beatles tend to polarize public opinion greatly. -

JETman replied to Karma Police's topic in Artists
In pop music, it's unfortunately true. Many jazz artists and classical composers end their careers with a bang. Pop groups tend to fizzle. It is the nature of pop music. The Rolling Stones have not fizzled. They flatlined back in 1973. Since then they've been sucking money from their adoring fan base. The point I was trying to make was that the Beatles, despite all their internal problems, were still able to write and record a damn near perfect album. Anyway, what do you have to back up your statement? -

So then you're making an excuse for why the Stones have sucked for the last going on 35 years? Are you saying that the longer a group's career, the smaller chance that they will make a great record at the end of it? That's quite a generalization.
