Ok, I guess I should have said "fewer than 10 IMPORTANT titles remain to be reissued".
-
The Impulse catalogue has been covered rather extensively. I'd be willing to bet that fewer than 10 titles remain to be reissued.
-
Good idea, but MC once implied that foreign producers are less likely to relinquish control of their catalogue distribution. I once suggested an ECM set, and he stated that such a set would be difficult for just this reason. So I would assume the same roadblocks would exist with the 2 Enja guys.

We should be thankful that Fantasy released just about everything worth releasing from the Prestige/Riverside/New Jazz, etc. family of labels, AND managed to keep the bulk in print for many years. That couldn't go on forever. Now it's just a repackaging game with Concord. It's understandable that they do not want to carry inventory of stuff that originated from the company they bought.

I've had the Shepp MPS as a Japanese import for a number of years. Great record!

They're OOP alright, but I guess Mosaic wouldn't do that, arguing that those who wanted to buy them did get them... some terrific music, though, on albums like "Mama Too Tight", "Live in San Francisco", "Four for Trane", "Fire Music", and "On This Night"! These and the Newport disc were all part of those Impulse Master Series or whatever it was called, roughly 1996-99 I think? So was "The Way Ahead". The album "Three for a Quarter, One for a Dime" was included on "Live in San Francisco" as a bonus. "The Way Ahead" included two bonus tracks from "Kwanza". "Black Gypsy" was part of the Free America series. "Attica Blues", "The Cry of My People" and "Kwanza" were reissued in the LPR/Originals series. That leaves about four albums or so (including one with Philly Joe done for America, and the fine "For Losers" and "Magic of Ju-Ju", both of which MCA/Verve somehow missed to bring back in the late 90s). I think that's just not interesting enough. Also it would be too large a set. And some of the late music isn't quite that great, while most albums do include some fine music, which would probably still cause Mosaic to do it as a 1964-67 Impulse box, if they ever did it, which would again mean that except for "Ju-Ju", there'd be no new music on it... Thanks for the fantastic summary. Mosaic probably should have done such a box in the mid-90s. The music is certainly worth the Mosaic treatment. Apparently, they missed their chance.

It is exactly the same. Coda also includes the 4 tracks not previously included on any studio album. Btw, this set is not SHM-cd, but for $100, who cares?

If anyone is interested, Amazon has a Gold Box deal on this today only for $99.99. It contains mini-lp replicas of their studio albums plus the 2 cd The Song Remains the Same. Very fine attention to detail, much like the Beatles Mono Box Set. http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27 http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Collectio...54MPVZPKSJN339M

I know, I was just having a little fun! FWIW, on my calculator here at work, 230/13 = 17.6923076923, which rounds DOWN to 17.69.

Same here. For me, enjoyment of music is very much mood driven. Right now (and for the last several months) I just can't listen to bop or straight-ahead jazz. It is just boring me to tears. Things are crazy at work, so I'm finding solace in re-discovering the early, HAPPY Beatles tunes. -
The mathematician in me just has to correct you as there are 13 discs in the set. 230/13 = 17.69 per disc And the classicist in me just has to say that it's "facsimile", from the Latin phrase "fac simile" or "make like" What's becoming apparent is that Lon can neither spell nor divide

The mono box was manufactured and hand-assembled in Japan. Better cd quality than exists in the US as well. Typically, individual Japanese mini-lps of this type go for $20-$25 a pop. At the MSRP, these work out to $300/13 = $23 per. This seems to be in the ballpark. I believe you needn't look further than this to explain the price differential between the mono and stereo sets.
-
Yes, but future pressings of the individ cd's will NOT have the docs as I understand it. Also, fwiw, DVD is for TV, docs on individ discs can only be watched on computer.
-
The length of the DVD included in the stereo set is 49 minutes.
-
I agree with Free for All. After all the positive reviews I had heard about this one, I found it to be a disappointment as well. Very ordinary arrangements, indeed. I was left wondering if any of the reviewers had ever heard a Duke or Count album.
-
Supposedly the stereos will be around forever, or at least until the next format comes along. The mini-docs on the stereo cd's will only be on them for a limited time though. It's the monos that are limited, and which can only be obtained in the box set. Hope this helps.

Try this one: http://www.jazzloft.com/m-31808-mahanthapp...ay-rudresh.aspx Better to these ears than his work with Iyer.

That's strange......it's definitely on the mono cd. You were right --- listening to this was a very different experience for me in mono. I'd even say better in a lot of ways. I know it's pretty pricey, but I'm really enjoying this boxed set. Yeah, the mono cd is a UK LP replica. It's not on my mono US LP. Gotcha! I was also surprised. Until now I had only heard it on the radio. Definitely cool to have, though.

I wonder if I'll feel the same way, but in reverse, when I hear Sgt. Pepper's for the first time in mono soon
-
Without having heard them, I would say this is the way to go. The monos are NOT being sold individually. The quicktime docs are only appearing on the stereo cd's for a limited time. They appear on the cd's in the stereo box, along with a DVD containing all of them so that you can watch on TV instead of your computer.
