Happy Birthday, David Ayers!
David Ayers replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks guys! Once again I was away working, this time in Amsterdam. But came dashing back to light the sparklers on my birthday cake! -
Tower on Sports Arena Boulevard closed years ago. The best was Lou's Records in Encinitas, now not worth the drive in jazz terms (it's a nice drive, but...). What else there was is either closed or reduced to a shadow (Off The Record). It is actually a bit shocking for such a large city.

I admit I don't know about that except vaguely.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
David Ayers replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
OK gotcha on content of sets, thanks. On royalties Mosaic don't pay royalties but will pay a sum to the copyright holder where there is one. You can be very sure that Universal, Sony/RCA and EMI don't pay when they don't have to i.e. for their european issues of pre-1960 material. They no more own it than anyone else, but they own artwork etc. -

Thanks for all the links! We haven't seen these in UK yet or at least I haven't. On copyright I am mentioning that since these are out of copyright there are no royalty payments due to the estates of the artists. If they were made in the US there would be. So I am joshing our US friend who fuss about Andorrans but will rush to buy these. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered... Oh and I thought in some cases the number of disk was different but maybe not. -

What is the presentation like on these boxes? The number of CDs is different to the earlier boxes so how's that work? Is the mastering still the same? What's the documentation like? I'd say each one of these sets is a no-brainer for people on this board. I've got the earlier sets and won't buy these (I don't think) but it would be useful to the board if anyone could post further info. Um, if we discussed these already in another thread please just link me... PS you do realise what the copyright issues are when importing pre-1960 music from Europe don't you? Well don't you?! -
Agreed. Chuck thinks its unethical and he isn't thanking you. So go figure. Here's what happens. First they read Nate Dorward's review - which mentions some Jim Sangrey character as having written the liner notes. Then they read the puffs, including one by the cryptically so-named JSngry. Then they notice that all the other positive reviews were posted about the same time as the mysterious 'Sngry'. With codebreaking skills worthy of Bletchley Park they connect Sangrey and Sngry, and figure that the label itself is behind the puffs. And they'll tell their friends. Or post on other boards about it. Or just read it all here.

I agree with Hans - it is at the very least bad form and could backfire.

Can I suggest you guys' don't overdo it? A lot of comments on the same day will look co-ordinated. Well, it is co-ordinated, and amazon customers may dislike that.

Got all this stuff but - that's the way to do it! -
OK I just moved this from another thread. I was going to pick up the Jazzwerkstatt issue of Max Roach in Berlin originally released on Repertoire. I only have one of the Repertoire originals which was the Ornette one and find the sound poor, so wonder if anyone can comment on the sound of the Roach. But I have noticed that the Repertoire featured 8 tracks and the Jazzwerkstatt only five and wonder if anyone knows anything about that? Discographies show these tracks for the Repertoire release: Max Roach - Jazzbuhne Berlin '84, Vol. 2 (Repertoire (G) RR 4902-CC) Cecil Bridgewater (tp) Odean Pope (ts) Tyrone Brown (el-b) Max Roach (d, vo) Berlin, West Germany, July 16, 1984 Good Bait I Remember Clifford Jordu Giant Steps Six Bits Perdido Papa Jo (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You "Vol 2" refers to the Repertoire series number and not to any prior Roach volume. Any insights?

Gotcha. So there must be a reason he didn't put it out again...
-
OK gotcha. Maybe someone else can remind me why he never reissued it? And why he owned it if it was joint credited?
-
I don't know on six bits I don't have the album.
-
Now I'm confused. Why is this great for Dixon if he's dead? My understanding was that he refused to reissue it - ? I thought this was the thing that put him off the record industry as he got paid a dollar or something? Help me out here...

Edited to add: moved this to another thread to try to get an answer. I only have one of the Reprtoire originals which was the Ornette one and find the sound poor, so wonder if anyone can comment on the sound of the Roach. A friend of mine is trying to place the manuscript of a book on jazz in Britain. The book is based on personal history, not academic. If anyone has connections to UK or *conceivably* US publishers who might be interested in this kind of material can you send me a PM please? I don't want to discuss him or the book on this thread and I am looking for actual routes not just general suggestions as to where he/I might try. Thanks.

Welcome development - thanks for the heads up. Let's hope there's more to come.

Then join the search for an affordable Nommo! And then join the search for the other Nommo! And then - well that's it, you're done. The end of a lifelong quest.

David Ayers replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks! I was on the camjazz site yesterday looking for new sets so it seems my timing was spot on.
