Of its time it may be but I am guessing from what I see that it was quite influential.

The 70s Twofer Jazz Reissue LP
David Ayers replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Not for musical reasons? I happen to have had the same music in other forms (individual LP's and CD's) since. I haven't played an LP in years, in fact my turntables both died quite awhile ago. It's also been quite awhile since I spun a CD. I listen primarily via MP3 now. So no, not for musical reasons. For sentimental reasons, as I said. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. A digital traitor! I've still got lots, have maaany I never re-bought in any form, and still play some of them even if I have other formats. A lot of them are RVG remasters and sound just fine. -

That'd be a good box set (though I already have it all in some form or another). Was there a particular reason that Chappaqua Suite wasn't issued in the U.S.? I think it is French-owned, basically. Don't know if that's the reason... At the time, both Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar (whose music was used in the film) were, in some artsy circles, considered "more hip", and perhaps "cooler", and their music more appropriate for a druggy cult film that had aspirations. (If you weren't around then, you have no idea how the sound of the sitar seemed to bring out the pipes, and Glass' music was hypnotic and "trippy", man...)_ Did Ornette take back his score, and make his own deal to have CBS France release it? I thought I had a copy of it, but can't find it right now, but if someone has it, is there anything in the credits/notes? I don't remember. (It WAS a druggy era. Not me, but ya know...) The official line from the film's director, Conrad Rooks, was that Ornette's soundtrack was too strong and too beautiful for the film. I have no idea what the real reason for dropping Ornette's music was. Rooks' statement always sounded like b.s. to me. It would be interesting to know why Columbia issued Chappaqua Suite in France and Japan, but not in the U.S. Thanks, Paul...that Rooks reference does resonate. "Too strong for the film" is accurate, as I recall. I don't know if I'd even bother watching it these days. 'Way past its shelf date. It was released on DVD in 2007! Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5ymb_0fCRo&playnext=1&list=PL8347A0B276689B5E I think Ornette is in there somewhere....

Thanks for checking. My guess is that even if OC thinks it is unauthorised he probably signed away the rights to the owner/maker of the film. And let's not forget the music for Who's Crazy which has the advantage that there is no ridiculous orchestra piping up in the background every two minutes.

I do have the LP but can't reach it. Why French CBS own it I can't remember. It is probably discussed in Harmolodic Life which I don't have to hand. Was it on the 'unauthorized' list from the Body Meta insert? Can't remember and can't easily check.

They could do an Ornette box but maybe it would be a little left field - Science Fiction/Broken Shadows/Skies of America/Chappaqua Suite. I mean Sony - I know about the Rhino.

Following Chuck's advice: Thanks. Look forward to hearing more in the early fall Well, the guy's just flogging his stuff. Does the board get a cut? It's fine and we see it here often, but let's not pretend it's anything other than it is.

Stepping Stones is good, more Stepping Stones is welcome.

The CD of Stepping Stones has bonus tracks, right. So this set will contain more even than that CD? Well woo-hoo, though, you know, with the Mosaic and exisitng Stepping Stones maybe I am far enough in...

I like the fact he plays with two hands. I said that already, but I crave endorsement.

So it appears that Fresh Sound/Absolute Distribution has licenced the Vee Jay material The VeeJay/Blue Moon came out in 1997. The Mosaic box was released three or four years later! I remember getting those Vee Jays CDs from Spain since they added so much material to the original LP releases. When the Mosaic box was issued later, I decided not to acquire it since it contained only a few additional takes. And the sound of those CDs was very acceptable even if not up to the Mosaic remxes. Ah well, so what was the company that reissued them after the Mosaic? They did them in 24 bit, IIRC. I had the impression that the license had passed to thme after Mosaic's expire - maybe I got that wrong.
-
IIRC the Mosaics were withdrawn becasue the license had expired and been sold to Blue Moon. The Mosaic sound is the usual clear and dry, nothing special.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
David Ayers replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
PS I think its great that sets can be made available cheaply in this way. They are without notes, sure, but the information is mainly findable (a lot of it here on this board). It's a great initiative by Capitol/EMI (who, of course, own all of the material they issue and are uhh somewhat legitimate despite the growls coming from Texas where world culture was mainly invented ). I guess there will be more of this (e.g. the Mobley set is also out there though missing from the list above), and stuff like Maynard and the Basie's at a low price would be good sellers, I should think. -

I'll mention mp3 bargains here, I think. HMV Digital (UK) has the Braxton Iridium set, 2 Ts for a Lovely T, the Hemingway/Braxton, and others I can't remember, for £7.99 each. Don't know if that site works outside UK. -

Maybe it makes it clear that it is your name, not just an expression of your mood. Mind you, you often do seem quite angry... PS if this is what we are talking about this board is as dead as the CD...
