I do, I do. Honestly, other than Otomo, Sachiko and Toshimaru, I really haven't heard anybody from The Tokyo Crew. I also don't know what the last name for Japanese is (Otomo or Nakamura?). Looks interesting - are you recommending it? And do I go for the Japanese issue or the Cortical?

I copied some things from two books of his I have when I used to play guitar. One book had a 7" of recorded material - that is the only stuff of his I have ever heard.

Any comment on the Diorio reissues from anyone who has heard either the originals or the reissues? PS There are also some releases on RAM (?) which I would like to know about if anyone has heard them.

Mildred Bailey is sold out!
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I was sorry to pass on this set. On the one hand, an outstanding editorial venture. On the other, too much of a good thing for my tastes and budget. I certainly won't be buying the euro-criminal version though. -

Just tell it like it is. I can take it. -
Does anyone in general prefer the current Blue Note RVG CDs to his original LP masters? Isn't it clear that CD remasters are generally problematic?

I do. If you already have some solo Hill I don't suggest this is a priority. Put it this way - you'll know if you need to have this. That said, I see it goes for reasonable prices. I'd caution against a sealed copy, as the rice paper inner sleeve which these AH LPs came in has a tendency to stick to the LP if stored under pressure.

My favourite Black Lion was a pair of LP reissues of Ornette's 1965 London Concert. The remastering was better than the versions I had. But they had missed off a track. A gem. But I forgive them: a big for this label!

Come on feel the noise! Or should that be, Cum on Feel the Noise? Or Noize? Maybe this belongs in Funny Rat? -

Thanks Kevin. I have tried this method and discovered the following. I can use wmp to copy from the CD, but then I just use normal drag and drop to shift whole albums from the hard drive to the player. This way, as you say, the albums stay together and, even more to the point, the tracks have their correct track number as the first item before the title. If I transfer from the hard drive to the player using wmp this number is missing - it only shows up in the normal, windows explorer view. So the workaround is relatively straighforward - it just took some figuring out. In fact, now life is easy.... -

Thanks Claude. I'll look into that too. I'm not cut out for all this new-fangled tomfoolery. -

Thanks guys. I'll try some of this other software. My problem is not that WMP cannot always find the track data, it is that when I transfer the tracks to the player they show up on the player in alphabetical order, rather than track order, even though the track number is there... I don't know if that is down to something about the player - I can't figure it out... -
I'm more of a technoduffer than I thought. I have a cheap mp3 player. I know how to copy a CD to my hard drive. And I know how to copy the resulting tracks across to the mp3 player. But what I don't know how to do is get the tracks to go across in the right order. Am I alone in having this problem? Any help? I use the Windows Media Player to do things. Is there another preferably free one what would do things better?

OK I was slow, but I got there: I got here too: Some late works say little or nothing. These are still going strong. Ballads is just the best, quite amazing... as many others have already pointed out. Like I say - I was slow, but I got there.

You can say what ever you want about this record (one of the master piece of TAYLOR recordings). But one thing who's sure, it's his incredible sound quality. At least, if you take the bannanas from your ears, you could hear (I hope) the indisputable value that sound quality brings to this record. As mentioned, I do nto have the disc, so cannot add my authoritative and definitive opinion, but could it be that David refers to older edition of the album, not the remaster released last year: Yes I was referring to the old one - I forgot that it had been remastered and reissued. That also makes my warning about paying ebay prices redundant. Which old one? ONE TOO MANY... was first an LP box and has always sound fine among all the badly recorded CT. And the reedition on hatOLGY didn't make the first worse with Peter Pfister in charge of the remastering. So, I don't still get why "you don't like the sound". Maybe it's CT that you don'y like. What is fine with me. I was discussing the first CD issue, not the LPs which I have never heard. I've no problem with the aesthetic of ecstacy and trance in this music, but with CT as with Keith Jarrett, sometimes the length of performance steers my mind from the projected mood to the actual notes - and then I can get restless. In general I like CT's groups but dislike some of his solo efforts. Salty Swift turns out to be an exception for me - just one of those things. Yet I can really get into the 1969 concert with Rivers, which is in worse sound and (most seem to think) not as musically coherent.

Hilary Hahn Concert in London - was fantastic
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Yes she was great. Incredible to see anyone performing the Schoenberg - it looks incredibly difficult to perform. Since she has learned it I really hope it gets recorded. She brought it off really well. A new and pin-sharp version of this on CD would be very welcome. Reviewed in the Telegraph -
Setting aside the question whether you get anything out of Cecil in general, my own take on this is that it is overlong and rambles. The CD version has introductory solos and duets which (to me) are tedious and get me bored before I have properly got started - I generally skip them. There *are* passages that appeal to me, but the general length of the venture is just too taxing and I can never remember where are the bits I like. I don't like the sound much either. I can see why this is collectable but maybe it is one of those holy grail recordings that doesn't quite warrant the ebay price? (OK for sure next time I play this I'll regret every word I just wrote...)

Can you change the spelling of Mosaic in the ebay heading for the Tristano etc set? People who rely on ebay searches and alerts might not see this set...
