I've got a spare ticket for the BBCSO concert with Hilary Hahn playing Schoenberg's violin concerto and Peter Eotvos conducting. Tonight 29th March - let me know if interested.

This thread reminds me of 'Humilation', the game played by English Literature professors in a David Lodge campus novel. The object is to win the game by humiliating yourself the most, by declaring a major work of literature you have never read (bearing in mind it is your job to have read them). One guy wins hands down by admitting he has never read Hamlet. He wins, but he gets sacked when his boss finds out. On the topic of academic ignorance I quite like the Don DeLillo Novel White Noise where the protagonist is a Hitler expert in the US organising an international Hitler conference and realising that the fact he does not speak or read German is going to be exposed. You guys are right up there! Including you Brownie!! Heh heh. Good thread though.

I left the crew a while ago, though... So how is the solo career going?
-
I guess they got tired of waiting for you to decide...

I can see where they are heading: Mosaic full box sets --> Mosaic Selects --> Mosaic Singles --> Mosaic iTunes Speaking of cheapness, the Jack Johnson set is currently going for £18 on amazon.co.uk...
-
Well yeah - but isn't it a bit pointless for them to spend money advertising an expired offer in expensive remote and exotic foreign-land? Looks to me as if the desire to limit the offer led them to make the offer period too short, at least for the overseas market which I imagine is significant for them. Compare the price of many classical box sets, and of the Euro-Mosaics or even the long-box Miles, and the Mosaic position looks less competitive. I'm not disputing the quality, just wondering out loud about the comparatively static business model in times when consumer expectations change quickly.
-
Well, maybe. I think Mosaic could be a bit more customer oriented. Their habit of charging premium price for everything (including shipping) when Euro-versions of their sets sell for less than half over here now looks a bit threadbare. Their shipping rates are keyed to LP sets - CD sets cost much less to send. And their offers are pretty tightfisted - I got a catalogue in March advertising a sale that ended in February. I think they could tweak some of this stuff and maybe do a bit more business. But what do I know?
-
Hmm - you're right! I was just checking out the Blakey. One CD comes in at $27 including shipping. I guess I'll wait to add it to my next order, but the spate of EuroMosaics (which seems set to continue) means I tend to place my Mosaic orders over here now... Maybe we will get euro-versions of these releases?

The old one...

Uh - seems I'm a bit late to come in on this one. I only know the TOCJ and the Mosaic. While the TOCJ is much superior to the Mosaic, the limitations of the original tape shine through even on the TOCJ. It has always sounded to me like the problem is with the deterioration of the source(s) used, but that is just an impression and descriptions of the LP seem to confirm it was always dodgy. That said, I love this session even in manky sound!

Do you consider this "growth"? Or is it a passing "phase"? How exactly do you relate to music? Good question which deserves a whole thread to itself I should have thought!

Mozart Complete Piano Concertos: Gardiner/Bilson
David Ayers replied to Guy Berger's topic in Classical Discussion
Newly reissued - you may have to wait a while for it to actually appear... -
Happy Birthday - the big 4-0 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It depends how much they charge for shipping. It would be $8.70 per disc with today's exchange rates. Unless they charge over $6 per disc shipping it would be a decent deal. They charge postage at cost to non-UK destinations, and the quoted price includes UK sales tax of 17.5% which is *deducted* from non-European Union orders (any tax at the buyer's end is his/her problem of course).

UK mail order company The Woods is offering BS/SN titles for £5 each (minimum order 2) inclusive of UK shipping. http://www.the-woods.co.uk/html/Black_Saint_Offer.html For my own uses I made this copy of their in print list:

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
David Ayers replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
UK readers may be interested that the Basie is available from mail order (non internet) classical company Europadisc for £32.95 inclusive of postage. They also list Tal Farlow at similar price. The one page of Verve offers they have is in their current mail order list which is not yet online. I can't say how viable overseas shipping would be as they charge extra per CD which might be costly. For UK buyers its a steal and you could ask them about Jazztet and Eldridge (which they don't list but who knows). Their internet site (which needs updating at time of writing) is here: http://www.europadisc.co.uk/ As I said, it is mail or phone order - no online ordering. [Normally a classical only company - this Verve offer is part of a massive Universal offer which has truly fantastic classical boxset deals - also to be found at mdt.co.uk] PS For countries outside EU, British sales tax (VAT of 17.5%) is deducted - this might offset some of the postage costs. PPS Offer lists now updated. Look at last page of This Month's offers for jazz, and at Stop Press for numerous classical bargains. Here is a steal if this is your bag: DG 477 5765 Schubert Complete Lieder Fischer-Dieskau;Moore 21 CDs £29.95 -
As I've said before, it really puzzles me that Here to Stay and Trompeta Toccata haven't been back since the Collectors Choice issues of yoren days. I think I am correct in saying that Here to Stay has not even been on CD in Japan. Why not? The other Freddie Hubbard Blue Notes seem to sell well, and HtoS is right up there with the best of them.

I heard the RVG of Gigolo in Ray's last week. The remastering was very vivid indeed, though I only heard it on the shop speakers and I didn't buy it. It might not pass the audiophile test but it certainly sounded very exciting!

work and spend, work and spend isn't it time to get off the treadmill? Enjoy all those sets! Personally I tend to find work gets in the way of all that listening...

yeah right can we hold you to that?
