OK so NOW I'll be hunting for an original LP
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Seriously (once you have figured this out) I just discovered this resource - maybe most of you guys already knew about it? -

What happened to those Selects?
David Ayers replied to Edlock8718's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I know that people want to hear that Tyner stuff but, in honesty, the anticipation might create over-excitement and expectations that the music can't easily meet. I sold my CD of Expansions once, bought another, now I think maybe I'll sell it again. That is the rare one of the three CDs and the best. I'd say anyone who cares already has Asante and Extension (and quite likely sold them) and they are easy to find. If it is a question of Cosmos on CD I'd be happier to see that as a separate release. This way buyers are duplicating just to get this album. Not as bad as the Hipnosis case maybe, but in the same camp. -
Rod, Don't you feel that Teldec did a good job of finishing what Sony started? As editions of avant garde music go that seems to me one of the best even if the switch in label midstream makes it aesthetically unpleasing on the shelf. As for Ligeti, a great presence. I've heard a lot of his work in concert at one time or another, and I am glad to see that his late Violin concerto (which I love) has been taken up by several violinists (I've heard it done in concert by Christian Tetzlaff and, perhaps more surprisingly, Tasmin Little). R.I.P.

They are definitely without.

34 thru 38 are included in the recently reissued 'Boston Blow-Up' Capitol/BN CD: Chaloff was not heard on 'Chasin' the Bass'. Top record, by the way! Broke my own rule and picked up the euro CCed edition in store. OK so it skips and won't play in the car, but the music is terrific and it copied to the PC just fine! So much for Copy Control... so buy it! (just not the euro-edition...)

Art Ensemble set going away
David Ayers replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I picked up Nonaah years ago - it's great that it is coming back. I'm going to dig it out and give it a play.... -
Thanks for the link! I missed this the first time...

Art Ensemble set going away
David Ayers replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Guys - make a move on this set - and order it direct from Chuck so you don't miss out. He promises not to gouge you for shipping! (er... right, Chuck?) Seriously, this kind of quality package is becoming a thing of the past so unless you know you'll hate it NOW is the time. -
OK well I never heard him when he was there the first time... but he is BACK... and this compilation is boiling with amazing grooves, old and new...

I'd say some of the earlier Mosaics were very important - and are now available in other formats - but that most later Mosaics are icing on the cake of a collection rather than its centre (excluding the Miles, of course, which are not unique to Mosaic). That goes double for the Selects which are sometimes interesting but mostly inessential - just for fun, really, and even less essential when you consider that in some cases the main items on them have already been available on CD for years. Not to diss Mosaic - they fill an invaluable niche - but even on box sets I can think of ten or twenty you owe yourself before a (currently available) Mosaic - various sets by Coltrane, Davis, Rollins, Monk, Armstrong, Mingus, Evans, Dolphy, Ornette, and add in a few ex early Mosaics whether as sets (Nichols) or as singles (Brown, Monk). I wouldn't put any current Mosaic or Select above any of these.

Kudos to you for being so decisive. I generally keep stuff I don't like on first listen for about ten years before I sell it, hoping it will grow on me. It never does. I want to be like you!

I passed on them all here in UK too. We weren't the only ones. Perhaps our boycott has had some effect? But maybe the copies seen in Dublin were imports and not the euro-editions? (come to think of it I am so used to ignoring EMI jazz products now that it will take an effort to start buying them again...)
-
Maybe the ones you bought in Dublin are US pressings?

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
David Ayers replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Europadisk currently feature the Basie and Farlow at £31.99 and I suspect therefore that amazon.co.uk will soon follow and restore sale prices. Watch this space. -
Apologies to those not interested in classical - thought this might interest some: http://www.gramophone.co.uk/newsMainTempla...newssectionID=1

Oliver Nelson Mosaic arrives in Europe
David Ayers replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I notice that mdt.co.uk is starting another Universal sale in early June, with price reductions on box sets (etc)similar to the earlier sale. Their site does not include jazz, of course, but it may be that some of the euro-mosaics will come back on amazon.co.uk as part of the sale - maybe including Rich or even Nelson? Obviously we don't know yet and there are reasons to think this won't happen, but it is maybe worth waiting a couple of weeks before going for either of these sets... maybe? Currenlty the Basie and Farlow are back at full price while many of the classical sets are still massively reduced on amazon, so there are not strong reasons to be hopeful - but who knows? -
If only Aric were here. He knows all about Hank...

BBC mistakes taxi driver for computer expert
David Ayers replied to Swinging Swede's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
True fans can bid for his lucky shirt on 15 Minutes: BBC News - page includes link to auction and to his personal website. -
Why not weigh 10 on a kitchen scale and take an average? It means standing up and leaving your computer though...
