  1. Thanks guys. I'll try some of this other software. My problem is not that WMP cannot always find the track data, it is that when I transfer the tracks to the player they show up on the player in alphabetical order, rather than track order, even though the track number is there... I don't know if that is down to something about the player - I can't figure it out...
  2. I'm more of a technoduffer than I thought. I have a cheap mp3 player. I know how to copy a CD to my hard drive. And I know how to copy the resulting tracks across to the mp3 player. But what I don't know how to do is get the tracks to go across in the right order. Am I alone in having this problem? Any help? I use the Windows Media Player to do things. Is there another preferably free one what would do things better?
  3. OK I was slow, but I got there: I got here too: Some late works say little or nothing. These are still going strong. Ballads is just the best, quite amazing... as many others have already pointed out. Like I say - I was slow, but I got there.
  4. You can say what ever you want about this record (one of the master piece of TAYLOR recordings). But one thing who's sure, it's his incredible sound quality. At least, if you take the bannanas from your ears, you could hear (I hope) the indisputable value that sound quality brings to this record. As mentioned, I do nto have the disc, so cannot add my authoritative and definitive opinion, but could it be that David refers to older edition of the album, not the remaster released last year: Yes I was referring to the old one - I forgot that it had been remastered and reissued. That also makes my warning about paying ebay prices redundant. Which old one? ONE TOO MANY... was first an LP box and has always sound fine among all the badly recorded CT. And the reedition on hatOLGY didn't make the first worse with Peter Pfister in charge of the remastering. So, I don't still get why "you don't like the sound". Maybe it's CT that you don'y like. What is fine with me. I was discussing the first CD issue, not the LPs which I have never heard. I've no problem with the aesthetic of ecstacy and trance in this music, but with CT as with Keith Jarrett, sometimes the length of performance steers my mind from the projected mood to the actual notes - and then I can get restless. In general I like CT's groups but dislike some of his solo efforts. Salty Swift turns out to be an exception for me - just one of those things. Yet I can really get into the 1969 concert with Rivers, which is in worse sound and (most seem to think) not as musically coherent.

  6. Yes she was great. Incredible to see anyone performing the Schoenberg - it looks incredibly difficult to perform. Since she has learned it I really hope it gets recorded. She brought it off really well. A new and pin-sharp version of this on CD would be very welcome. Reviewed in the Telegraph
  7. Setting aside the question whether you get anything out of Cecil in general, my own take on this is that it is overlong and rambles. The CD version has introductory solos and duets which (to me) are tedious and get me bored before I have properly got started - I generally skip them. There *are* passages that appeal to me, but the general length of the venture is just too taxing and I can never remember where are the bits I like. I don't like the sound much either. I can see why this is collectable but maybe it is one of those holy grail recordings that doesn't quite warrant the ebay price? (OK for sure next time I play this I'll regret every word I just wrote...)
  8. Can you change the spelling of Mosaic in the ebay heading for the Tristano etc set? People who rely on ebay searches and alerts might not see this set...
  9. Thanks guys - exactly what I was hoping to hear! And if anyone wants to check out Boston England try this!
  10. Great link! Thanks Claude.
  11. Uh - I guess the post is all in the title
  12. I've got a spare ticket for the BBCSO concert with Hilary Hahn playing Schoenberg's violin concerto and Peter Eotvos conducting. Tonight 29th March - let me know if interested.
  13. This thread reminds me of 'Humilation', the game played by English Literature professors in a David Lodge campus novel. The object is to win the game by humiliating yourself the most, by declaring a major work of literature you have never read (bearing in mind it is your job to have read them). One guy wins hands down by admitting he has never read Hamlet. He wins, but he gets sacked when his boss finds out. On the topic of academic ignorance I quite like the Don DeLillo Novel White Noise where the protagonist is a Hitler expert in the US organising an international Hitler conference and realising that the fact he does not speak or read German is going to be exposed. You guys are right up there! Including you Brownie!! Heh heh. Good thread though.
  14. I left the crew a while ago, though... So how is the solo career going?
  15. Like the look of this.
  16. I guess they got tired of waiting for you to decide...
  17. I can see where they are heading: Mosaic full box sets --> Mosaic Selects --> Mosaic Singles --> Mosaic iTunes Speaking of cheapness, the Jack Johnson set is currently going for £18 on amazon.co.uk...
  18. Well yeah - but isn't it a bit pointless for them to spend money advertising an expired offer in expensive remote and exotic foreign-land? Looks to me as if the desire to limit the offer led them to make the offer period too short, at least for the overseas market which I imagine is significant for them. Compare the price of many classical box sets, and of the Euro-Mosaics or even the long-box Miles, and the Mosaic position looks less competitive. I'm not disputing the quality, just wondering out loud about the comparatively static business model in times when consumer expectations change quickly.
  19. Well, maybe. I think Mosaic could be a bit more customer oriented. Their habit of charging premium price for everything (including shipping) when Euro-versions of their sets sell for less than half over here now looks a bit threadbare. Their shipping rates are keyed to LP sets - CD sets cost much less to send. And their offers are pretty tightfisted - I got a catalogue in March advertising a sale that ended in February. I think they could tweak some of this stuff and maybe do a bit more business. But what do I know?
  20. Hmm - you're right! I was just checking out the Blakey. One CD comes in at $27 including shipping. I guess I'll wait to add it to my next order, but the spate of EuroMosaics (which seems set to continue) means I tend to place my Mosaic orders over here now... Maybe we will get euro-versions of these releases?
  21. Uh - seems I'm a bit late to come in on this one. I only know the TOCJ and the Mosaic. While the TOCJ is much superior to the Mosaic, the limitations of the original tape shine through even on the TOCJ. It has always sounded to me like the problem is with the deterioration of the source(s) used, but that is just an impression and descriptions of the LP seem to confirm it was always dodgy. That said, I love this session even in manky sound!
  22. Do you consider this "growth"? Or is it a passing "phase"? How exactly do you relate to music? Good question which deserves a whole thread to itself I should have thought!
  23. Have a slice of this cake on me!
