I was wondering about this. I only ever had the title tune, and that was on a UK Blue Note anthology. The sound was poor, but the sound in general on those UK complations is a bit muddy, so I didn't know what factor was to blame. It is still likely to be a lot better than the version I had. It was recorded in Paris, wasn't it (?), where the engineering results at the time were variable.

I agree Gary. I think if I had ordered them I would keep them too, and the price was good. I just took a decision not to buy. Same is true of the last RVGs, which I could have bought for £5 each at Fopp in Edinburgh the other week. Since I know I will eventually pick up the US versions I decided to do so, but equally there is no point cutting of your nose to spite your face. I wasn't pressurising you into a one-out-all-out situation! Plus you have the music and I will have to wait ...

According to this source (Mulligan Discography) , and I quote: "Tercinet notes "Utter Chaos" as released on Verve MGV-8567". This may be wrong, of course.

Bad news on the copy protect front. Obviously there was a sliver of hope that these would be US imports rather than euro-pressings, as the Conns of course always used to be. I was pretty sure they would be protected and didn't order them even at 'bargain' price. I'm not so easily lured! If you wanted you could return them to amazon. Of course you will get into a big to-do with them, but there is a Trades Description Act issue - they describe them as CDs and EMI most plainly admit that they are not on their own website (and by not using the CD logo which they are prohibited from using by Philips).

Late As you probably already know, the JRVG of Hi Voltage comes out this month. Worth investigating, I should think...
-
I'm puzzled by that too. I don't rate it that highly and I thought not many people did. Perhaps they think it will come up well in sonic terms and decided to put it out for that reason?

Sigh.... The European editions of these will be appearing with the words Copy Control on them, and I will be waiting for my next trip to the US to pick them up. From what I read, EMI will introduce this in the USA soon, so enjoy your remaining batches of freedom... Did I mention that EMI Classics in the UK do NOT employ this technology? Evidently they judged the classics market too audiophile and didn't dare risk the middle class backlash (!). Instead they just print a plea under the clear plastic tray insert about not copying. It is interesting that they perceive they have different customer groups to deal with. In fact, classical collectors and jazz collectors are pretty often the same people, but jazz gets lumped in with the pop division and so has gone the same way as far as copy control is concerned.

Well I am trying not to think about the next one too much. At the moment it's goodbye book hello beer!

Well I have to spoil it all by saying what it is. This is my third academic book on modernist literature. This one is called Modernism: A Short Introduction and will be published by Blackwell in about 8 months. It is aimed at students and general readers. Knowing what publishers are like I won't earn a penny, but I am a professional academic and so I do it for the love (!). I don't think it will have any appeal to anyone who isn't actually studying this stuff so I am not going to suggest that you all put in your pre-order. Save your money for the Mulligan Mosaic!

Not only that but the wedding photos came today. I'll be posting them soon... Hurrah!

Maybe they could get Patton to re-record the offending tracks?
-
The TOCJ of The Way I Feel seems to be still in print. I fully understand that tape deteriorate. I am just reminding people that if they are not satisfied they may return the set. I didn't order it and and don't have a view either way.

Mosaic offer a no-quibble guarantee. Why not cut your losses and send the sets back?

Obscure records you love which never get a mention

Here is one link: link I did find a link to a track listing but I have lost it. You can view this also at Forced Exposure and hmv.co.jp The track with Yoshida is less than 5 minutes. There seem to be three other Hayward releases on this label (all Japan only) but I don't have the others. -
I think the price change is due to the exchange rate.

Maybe we will see rolling reissues of batches of these. Is anyone aware of plans to reissue titles after these 48?

Oh yes... Thanks! Duh - I hadn't seen that in such a flap was I...

Does the Armstrong JSP box contain a booklet? I need a smattering of data for a paragraph in a book I am writing (uhhhh... that I want to finish by Sunday, yikes). I was sure there was a book but there seem to be only poxy inserts. If there is no book, could anyone kindly point me to an online source giving details of dates and personnel on these sides. Thanks all. PS the book isnt about jazz so don't hold your breath.

Now you mention it, I always thought that MJQ LP was rather trebly. Man can they PLAY though...

Anyway who really NEEDS more than one pair of shoes?

yeah that 'anonymous' certainly wrote a few well thumbed 'classics'...

Hey I scored one for re-reading old classics. But, uhhh, that seems to be part of my job so maybe it doen't count...

I know there is another thread of this type - I just thought I'd start a fresh one. My pick of the day is Charles Hayward, Double Agents (Live in Japan Volume 2) Locus Solus LSR 002, recorded 1996 Duets with Brotzmann, Haino, Tatsauya Yoshida and Yoshihide Otomo, plus two trio tracks with Brotz and Haino. OK its a noise fest but ME LIKEE. Has anyone heard or even heard of this one? Post your obscure favorites here!

What happens when it all goes to SACD? That's what I am hoping for anyway...
