  1. I think it was the Dizzy Gillespie (with Bird) Sextet recording for Musicraft, Feb. 28, 1945. I think.
  2. The problem is, she seems to want to keep him to herself...
  3. Not in this thread. (I don't mean to needle you).
  4. Just a question: what does FA mean in "FA: OOP Mosaic Sets ..."? Is it a typo, and it should be FS, as in For Sale? Or am I going to have to learn even MORE abbreviations?
  5. Back to Art.... In the two weeks before that 'original' Vanguard date, Art was in Toronto, playing at Bourbon St. jazz club, with Bernie Senensky on piano... After the first night at the Vanguard, he called Bernie (with whom he had played beautifully) begging him to come to New York to make the gig. Senensky couldn't do it (other commitments); and in those days it would take weeks to get a green card -- he didn't want to risk permanent expulsion for working without one. Since then, Senensky has regretted not taking the chance. I taped them one night and gave the tapes to Art. Years later in Germany, I found a CD issue as "Vol. 1 at Bourbon St.". The label was from Tijuana...
  6. Agreed. And further down, your post-quotation from Larry Kart expands on the thesis. Very articulate, both... Somewhere around the house I have an interview I did with Keith Jarrett almost 35 years ago. I should dig it out and hear what he has to say...
  7. I've just ordered the Handy set. It'll be good to have it all together on CD. Also nice to see Don Thompson's and Terry Clarke's early recordings in the US. They're both close friends, and still very active on Toronto's jazz scene, and travel internationally...
  8. I'd reject it for the music.
  9. Okay...y'all convinced me it was for real. I've ordered it! Thanks for the direction.
  10. It's getting onto Happy Hour, and thinking about heading into the kitchen to put together some dinner, so it's time for a glass of Fuzion. It's a cheap and cheerful shiraz/malbec from Argentina that isn't available in the USA, apparently, but its good value has caused a flurry in Ontario. A good story about it last weekend: http://www.thestar.com/living/article/574283
  11. Word has come from Whitey Mitchell's daughter, Lesley Mitchell Clarke (her husband is drummer Terry Clarke) that her father succumbed to cancer on the weekend... "I am so sad to let you know that my dear Dad, noted jazz bassist, comedy writer/producer and author, Gordon "Whitey" Mitchell passed away on January 17th at his home in Palm Springs, Ca. He was surrounded by his daughters (myself, as well as my sisters Karen and Michele) and his beloved wife, Marilyn as he finished his long, valiant battle with the cancer that ultimately took him from us." Whitey's brother was Keith "Red" Mitchell, who died in late 1992. Some more info at http://www.answers.com/topic/whitey-mitchell
  12. Y'know who else was there? Rob McConnell -- I learned this recently when he told a story about buying Bird a drink at the Silver Rail tavern on the break. An underage 18 year old, he had to borrow the money to do it, but he HAD to at least talk to Bird. "Can I buy you a drink?" "Sure, kid. Bartender, a double please..." Gulp.
  13. This may seem plebeian to some, but Henry Mancini wrote some pretty damn good scores...original music, and lifted out to become pop hits, and good quality pop hits at that. "Two For The Road" is one of the best songs of the last half of the 20th century, imho.
  14. I'm pretty sure it's a song by Raffi. If your kids were young in the early '80s you probably owned a tape of it. Beat cha by 22 minutes, Medjuck. (What does it say that we know children's recordings? My excuse is that I did a Monday-to-Friday radio show "Stories and Music For Children" for more than two decades. What's yours? Kids? Grandkids?
  15. Have you ever heard Trane's speaking voice? Here are some interview tracks from a Dutch broadcaster, Michiel de Ruyter: Interview MdR met John Coltrane 19 november 1961 Interview MdR met John Coltrane 1 december 1962 Interview MdR met John Coltrane 26 oktober 1963 Interview MdR met John Coltrane 27 juli 1965 Available at http://mdr.jazzarchief.nl/interviews/coltrane/
  16. I think that's from a song by the Canadian children's entertainer Raffi, isn't it?
  17. I don't have it at hand, but I think Claude Thornhill's band did it on a transcription (Gil Evans arrangement?) in about 1946 or 1947.
  18. There was this Bella, who by barlight at closing time looked pretty good...
  19. Why do y'all find it necessarty to quote the whole damn list?
  20. That was my reaction. "Premium" lifestyle brand, mind you! -_- Is it true that a "lifestyle" is for people who don't know how to have a life?
  21. I wonder if they might consider just publishing the dead-tree version on Sundays? The UK has quite a few "Sunday papers"...could it work on this side of the Atlantic?
  22. A day late, but best wishes anyway! Happy Birthday, Nate...
  23. Westlake was a solid pro, capable in every way and as reliable as a Lion/Wolff BlueNote. There was a time when you'd just buy the new one, regardless of who was playing, just because it was a BlueNote/Westlake. That said, "Dancing Aztecs" is so deft and clever in moving along half-a-dozen storylines and characters you'd almost think you were at a Mozart opera...
  24. "43". I like him, but will let someone else have the last word, making it to "44"
