  1. Depends on how you feel about jazz flute. It's something close to my nightmare, right alongside those "and Four Flutes!" albums from the fifties. Even though it's Threadgill you can likely pass.

    Ran Blake

The ESP was on CD when Calibre/Abraxas did some select titles around 2000. I don't think ESP's vinyl pressing quality did Ran's spare approach any favors. For that matter, neither did c. 1968 Milestone or the atrocious Horo pressings (even though those LPs are musically wonderful). There's a nice one on No Business (LP only) that came out recently, recorded with guitarist David "Knife" Fabris, called Vilnius Noir. Huh! Have you ever seen a copy? It must've disappeared without a trace.

New duo with Sara Serpa on Clean Feed: http://ranblake.com/reviews/albums/aurora-2012/ Can't wait!
  4. That's normal for that one. But definitely one to grab if you don't have it!
  5. My question exactly. But I'm pretty sure I know the answer ... and so I'll drop those 30 bills thisaway instead and walk off a much happier camper. Paul Bley -- Copenhagen & Haarlem ... 6. Huh, I didn't know the Motion/Brackeen/Izenon albums were on CD. ECM is tricky; such a jumble of LP, CD, OOP, reissue, import, domestic, etc.
  7. Pulled this out yesterday for a spin. I finally bought it after 3 years of forgetting! Unfortunately the CD is OOP and goes for ~$30 on Amazon. LPs are around, but relatively scarce. So get digging if you're interested!
  8. Saw this new Japanese reissue on DG earlier and was intrigued. Anyone know this one? Worth a try at $27 or a fairly run-of-the-mill set? http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=wkm4zgbzhv&ref=featured.php&refQ=cat%3D5
  9. Whoa, awesome re: Motian. Great news.
  10. Good deal, but not a patch on when I got all three for about $14 each a few years back (thanks to the board, of course!)
  11. Hm, interesting. This recording closes out Treme's second season and I scoured these CDs over and over after seeing it, thinking maybe I'd missed it. But I guess not. Great performance.
  12. I would in fact recommend just about anything by Julius Hemphill: Raw Materials & Residuals, Dogon AD, Flat Out Jump Suite, Oakland Duets, Live, Blue Boye, Roi Boye & The New Gotham Minstrels, Buster Bee. Listening to Julius play is like being inside someone's head. A very introspective player.
  13. Yes! When I first got it I was expecting white heat, but was pleasantly surprised. It's gorgeous.
  14. Thanks for the link. I probably haven't visited the Blue Note website since at least 2010. It's much, much improved.
  15. Wow, all in one go. I wish more labels did that. I wonder if someone went for that back in day. Definitely a good investment!
  16. Love this one. One of the best album covers in my collection, to boot.

  18. I have always wanted to give him a hearing, and this looks like a good place to start. Any other suggestions?
  19. Always. I'll never forget putting Rollins/VV on for the first time to hear him bashing away on "A Night in Tunisia". Truly jarring and exciting playing that was way ahead.
  20. The most recent batch of BS/SN boxes was the strongest yet: Hemphill, Lewis, Abrams, Dave Douglas, George Adams. The Hemphill & Douglas sets are especially wonderful. Of the older ones, Braxton, Lacy, Murray, Dixon and Haden are my favorites. The only ones I've skipped on are the Pieranunzi, Rava, and Russell are the ones I've taken a pass on, though I'm open to those. Higher priorities & all.
  21. On again with most titles either $10.97 or $4.97. I hope there's new stuff coming. Things have certainly slowed to a crawl over in Basel.
  22. Original or was this reissued? Original or was this reissued?
  23. I might have more to add later, but I'll note that Spirits Rejoice is my favorite Ayler album. I love the cavernous sound and the three horn front line. While Don Cherry was "better", I like Donald best of all next to Ayler. The version of "Angels" here, with that huge echo, is mesmerizing. I'll never forget blasting it to high hell in the college radio station-- my show was Sinday nights so I had the whole place to myself. And the wind-up on the opening title track is like nothing else. This is Ayler at his most gorgeous. I'm also a big fan of the string band. My favorite stuff is the Europe 1966 material on Holy Ghost and hatOLOGY.
