I listened to this one this morning and it's a joy. T-K-M repertory done Braxton style. The man himself is wonderful on piano, really channeling Tristano but going his own way entirely. The same can be said of the front line, Jackson Moore & Andre Vida; Konitz and Marsh are the touchstones, but the improvisation is quite original. This was recorded during a fallow stretch in Braxton's career but it would've been a "hit" had it been released by a label at the time. You can download here, or just read Anthony's notes: http://tricentricfoundation.org/label/member-downloads/quintet-tristano-1997/

Sorry, I mentioned in the first post that I do have that. I have more Fats than I realized. Still, thanks for the suggestions. I'm gonna look out for that concert with Bird.

I would never be put off by Benny Goodman. He's one of my very favorites. So I do also have his stuff with Fats.

Oh, I have that JATP CD.

I have the Complete Blue Note, the Savoys, and the Milestone CD with Tadd Dameron. Anything else that doesn't verge into abject completism? (ie indecipherable airchecks, cuts where he plays an 8-bar solo, etc) Also have his Prestige session.

A real treat coming out on New Braxton House/Tri-Centric tomorrow: a double album of Lennie Tristano music recorded in studio in 1997 with Braxton on piano.

Really looking forward to that Ran Blake. I wonder if it's a rare ensemble recording from Mr Blake? I really hope he skips over that Matthew Shipp. It's a fine record indeed but can easily be had for less than $5 on the used market in either its hatOLOGY or original Brinkman edition. If I had to speculate based on past releases, we'll see the new dates come quickly; as for the older sessions I think MORNING JOY and DORTMUND will be along pretty soon, as well as the Dreyblatt, Shipp and Doran. TOPOLOGY, 8+3 TRISTANO and A WHITE LINE are probable in the next year maybe.. I don't see GARDEN, WILLISAU, or SANTA CRUZ coming anytime soon, or ever. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Of course he's also been known to drop titles out of nowhere, like COMIN' ON last year. If you can't tell I spend entirely too much time and energy on this label

Accidentally bought this one twice. $25 shipped in the US.

Thanks. Yes, I've been wanting to check out their stuff for a while and this is a good opportunity to start. They put out so much music that looks good to me that Ive been too daunted to even try to start picking them up.

Thanks. I got the Sharp/Monk, Rudd, the two Gonzalez, Fiedler and a Charles Gayle. Any recommendations on other titles? I'll likely go back later.

October 4, 2011: several Mosaics are running low
colinmce replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
If you have the money, I say go for the L/B. You get three settings: electric small group jazz, straight-ahead quartet and duo. I liked all three discs. A "three star" set but good to have on the shelf. -
Since you're taking the time to sort through these suggestions by listening to the records, maybe I'll expound on my suggestion of Steve Lacy-Mal Waldron: Journey Without End. I think it's a good candidate for a few reasons: First and foremost it's a great record with great playing by two all-time masters (also their first record together) It was released in Japan only on Victor and I don't believe it's ever been on CD. Unlike many of the encounters between Steve and Mal, this is a quartet record, not a duo which I think makes the music more "marketable" On the latter point, the leaders also have high visibility which might secure more sales. If you ask me, this sounds like what you're looking for: a rare, unavailable on CD title with impeccable playing by two amazing musicians. It has some historical significance, and, if it came out next year it would fall in-between the ten year milestone of Waldron and Lacy's passings. I think it would make a fitting tribute and would be enjoyed by just about anyone who bought it. Just my two cents on the matter. Others may disagree.

LF: Joe McPhee - As Serious As Your Life
colinmce replied to colinmce's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Yes. It was also printed in an edition of 1500 rather than the usual 3000. The search continues ... -
Looking for a copy of this stubbornly hard to find hatOLOGY disc. If anyone has a copy they'd like to part with I'd pay up to $25

These usually also show up at Dusty Groove after awhile.

http://www.jazzloft.com/p-55191-estilhacos.aspx Clean Feed has just reissued this, a 1972 recording that was allegedly the first jazz album released in Portugal. I can only assume that this is an incredibly rare Lacy side.

Drat! The Birthday Book I have states his birth as the 15th, same as my son! I so enjoyed that connection....

Sure.

I lost the CD of Andrew Hill's Black Fire a couple years back-- still have the case & inserts. I know it's a long shot but anyone have a spare? I'd be happy to pay the cost of shipping. It was the RVG but I wouldn't care if the disc was a McMaster. I'm thinking this is doubtful, but I figger it couldn't hurt before I just head to Amazon and cough up five bucks for a new copy.

Charlie Parker Records 30CD set
colinmce replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've seen plenty Andorran releases with thumbnails of the original art; I think the problem is using the covers in whole. Hence why these discs aren't LP repros (which would have been quite nice, except in the case of that Arr Pepper session) -
Cool, I love when that happens. I've never got anything so personal but I did once find a red Beatles fanzine flexidisc in a Paul McCartney record. Also some clippings in used Cecil Taylor Barnabys and a nice Whitney Balliet profile on Claude Thornhill in that Columbia anthology.

Available many different ways for cheap. No reason not to get it IMO.
-
Wow, never heard of many of those. I'd buy them all!

Jump Up and Non-Sequitors (Dave Liebman, Ellery Eskelin Jim Black) are now available. As if it bears mentioning (and as Sangrey pointed out upthread) Jump Up is one of the finest jazz records I've ever heard and is absolutely not to be missed.
