  1. Is there even any more footage extant than this? I realize I've never seen Ayler on film before.
  2. Also probably not much of a working group, but there is that drool-worthy photo of Bird with Monk, Mingus and Roy Haynes.

    Anthony Braxton

    Wow, I'm there!
  4. As regards the Ornette-Bradford band, I once saw a photo of them in a book (with Charles Moffet?) that said it was from Atlantic studios ca 1962. I've never been able to find the photo again. Perhaps this was among the music lost in the infamous fire? My vote for this thread is any incarnation of the Giuffre 3 after Bley/Swallow. Don Pullen! Geez ... This may be more of a "what could have been" thing, but would that Braxton's trio with Holland and Philip Wilson been a working band beyond the Town Hall concert.
  5. :tup :tup
  6. Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Benny Goodman, Cecil Taylor, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Andrew Hill, Jimmy Giuffre, Lester Young, Albert Ayler, Herbie Hancock, Jackie McLean Hard to narrow it down better than that!
  7. I wonder if the orchestra will carry on without him? Though his mark is indelible on the music, RivBeaO seems like it would also work very well playing his charts with guest soloists (Sabir Mateen? Billy Harper? Sam Newsome?) A great body of work that deserves to be played and heard still.
  8. When I think of Sam Rivers I think of an open mind and soul. It's a trait all too rare and is his lasting legacy.
  9. I understand where Jim is coming from on that. There is some Kenton I can get behind but I get the same vibe. Listening to Kenton can be like drinking a big warm glass of milk. Which, to me, is creepy. This is very extra-musical and entirely subjective, I admit this.
  10. My guess is that if I packed it in an LP mailer with cardboard, it'd run maybe $10-15USD.
  11. One more try: a straight $50 for everything listed here.
  12. Bump down to $85
  13. Bump down to $55 for everything.
  14. Already a classic in my household. I love it.
  15. Hm, this was mentioned by Cuscuna in an interview some years ago. I think he intended to release it through Blue Note at the time, so I'm glad he found an avenue for release. He mentioned it in tandem with some live Andrew Hill so fingers crossed on that one!
  16. Up. I'll offer everything listed in the first post for $65 shipped, or as stated above.
  17. Mulligan & Zeitlin are sold.
  18. All sold. Mods feel free to delete.
  19. Hajdu is exhausting and is at his best when he's writing about someone/something he actually likes, which is exceedingly rare (and usually is directed at middling contemporary pop stars and hip-hop, such is the vogue for a certain brand of aging white male critic). More often than not, though, he's contented to shoot fish in a barrel. As this piece shows, he's also prone to fits of bizarre invective.
  20. ubu said it: the range of his activities is breathtaking. One of the greats.
  21. Up with a price drop for this OOP set.
  22. Updated with a couple price drops.
