  1. Definitely right about new music, but don't be so very sure about the hard boppers et al. Mulligan is famously quoted as saying he was peeved about "Complete Recordings" sets that played in session order; he said they worked hard to scructure the songs on their records a certain way. Differently for sure than Intents & Purposes but still.
  2. I think his work in the Krupa trio is killer.
  3. Looks like some easy listening there.
  4. Listening to the Tentet LP for the first time in awhile and it really is just so modern. If you came in at the right time you could easily mistake it for something like Muhal Richard Abrahms. But then it also just hits that perfect 50s jazz note too. A real treasure.
  5. Sad indeed. I just love those early recordings with Raney and Overton. They sound like they were recorded in a bedroom. There's really nothing else like them. Not to mention the great Tentet.
  6. Tremendously sad. The Band's music has had a tremendous impact on my life. Peace, Levon.
  7. I think he's referring to The Dark Tree. If so, yes get it. It comes with a great CD and is about $3 on Amazon. I haven't yet read Song of the Unsung.
  8. I'm guessing the answer is "No" but do you think it would be feasible to release all three Flying Dutchmans at the same time? People might be more inclined to buy them all in one go. I'm thinking of the old RVG days, stopping by the record shop to grab all four on release day.
  9. Frankly-- and I say this as a major Braxophile-- the Mosaic is not essential. While taking the work as a whole works on the level of "look what he managed to do with major label bucks in just 7 years", I think taking the albums on their own is more representative of Braxton's vision. Not to mention there's equally vital work from this period on Moers, Hat Hut, Leo, Black Saint, Muse & Freedom. The LPs have decent sonics, are easy to find, have great covers, and, above all else, contain exhaustive notes. While it's not Mosaic's policy to include liner notes in their sets, I think the lack here borders on insulting. While I'm fine not having Ira Gitler's 500th bland rundown on a Lee Morgan date reprinted yet again, Anthony goes into strenuous detail explaining his musical systems on these albums and to have the music without this goes explicitly against Braxton's intent. Mike Heffley's notes in the Mosaic are fine but hardly relevatory. Lastly, the way the music is divided is slightly confusing and breaks up some of the records. I don't mean to complain overmuch. I'm thrilled Mosaic put this out and I'm glad I bought it. But for the purposes of answering your question, this is what I think.
  10. Oh yeah!! I have West Coast Hot, but would buy those records again in a heartbeat. Will you pair the Carter-Bradford albums? And obviously I think you should go for the Tapscott.
  11. Yes, it's from Dusty Groove. Corbett vs Dempsey put the record out. iirc, they are based in the space above the DG storefront but I could be wrong. It's been 9 sad years since I stepped foot in there!
  12. Fun, but nothing for the ages. Giardullo & McPhee were excellent, but the surprise "winner" was Roberto Ottaviano. Colin, I'll be in Lafayette in a bit for the Festival Internationale. PM me if you'd like to try to hook up. Will do! I actually haven't yet been to FI, but I do want to check it out. On the McPhee tip, I've been meaning to pick this up, it looks great.
  13. Good condition $75 shipped in US.
  14. How was the Lacy tribute? I'd have loved to see that.
  15. PM'd on Lacy & Threadgill
  16. ECM recorded more than a bit of "black" jazz (cringe...). Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, Mal Waldron, Marion Brown, Paul Motian w/ Charles Brackeen, Old & New Dreams, Dewey Redman, Bennie Maupin and others did excellent work on the label in the 1970s and early 80s. Mr Eicher is up to a lot more than people give him credit for and always has been. Do check out the other AEC albums and these I've listed.
  17. Almost certain there's video of the original quartet, maybe even at the Five Spot, in the Ken Burns. Of course it's a split second and there's no sound ... I could be wrong but I really do recall this.
  18. Extension is now available at Dusty Groove, or rather, will be for a couple hours. I went the Amazon route since I have Prime, so lord knows when mine will show up.
  19. Do you have a list? I like them and have big holes in my Shorter, Blakey, and Silver collections, not to mention odds & ends.
  20. I got half my order today. Hopefully the rest tomorrow? Also my discs were wrapped in a Lonehill catalog
  21. Alas it was empty. In the case of that CD which was in The Turnaround? Or maybe thèy took another turn?
  22. This happened to me with The Turnaround a while back. It's probably in another case, but which??
  23. Can you say a bit more? I might be interested in picking up some Venus titles this way if the packaging is a facsimile of the original.
  24. Lee should almost be exempt from this conversation. I think he could make just about any tune into something interesting.
  25. I have heard both the Webster and Sims-Brookmeyer renditions. I enjoy them but there's still just a je ne sais quoi about the more straightforward vocal versions I've heard.
