  1. PM'd on Lacy & Threadgill
  2. ECM recorded more than a bit of "black" jazz (cringe...). Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, Mal Waldron, Marion Brown, Paul Motian w/ Charles Brackeen, Old & New Dreams, Dewey Redman, Bennie Maupin and others did excellent work on the label in the 1970s and early 80s. Mr Eicher is up to a lot more than people give him credit for and always has been. Do check out the other AEC albums and these I've listed.
  3. Almost certain there's video of the original quartet, maybe even at the Five Spot, in the Ken Burns. Of course it's a split second and there's no sound ... I could be wrong but I really do recall this.
  4. Extension is now available at Dusty Groove, or rather, will be for a couple hours. I went the Amazon route since I have Prime, so lord knows when mine will show up.
  5. Do you have a list? I like them and have big holes in my Shorter, Blakey, and Silver collections, not to mention odds & ends.
  6. I got half my order today. Hopefully the rest tomorrow? Also my discs were wrapped in a Lonehill catalog
  7. Alas it was empty. In the case of that CD which was in The Turnaround? Or maybe thèy took another turn?
  8. This happened to me with The Turnaround a while back. It's probably in another case, but which??
  9. Can you say a bit more? I might be interested in picking up some Venus titles this way if the packaging is a facsimile of the original.
  10. Lee should almost be exempt from this conversation. I think he could make just about any tune into something interesting.
  11. I have heard both the Webster and Sims-Brookmeyer renditions. I enjoy them but there's still just a je ne sais quoi about the more straightforward vocal versions I've heard.
  12. Also not a fan of "Round Midnight" aside from Monk.
  13. I have never heard a version of either "Stella" or "Valentine" that didn't bore me stiff. Torpid and melodically inert, both. I would also say "Lullabye of Birdland", but Lee Konitz's recent version on the ECM album takes it someplace. I love "Someone to Watch Over Me" but haven't really ever heard a satisfying jazz performance of it.
  14. I'd damn jeffcrom's quick fingers if a copy wasn't already en route to me!
  15. Recorded in my old home base of Iowa City (and Anthony's sole performance in the state, as far as I know) if I'm not mistaken! I'd like to have it one day if only for the curiosity. How is it?
  16. Got my shipping notice the next day. Any idea how long it takes for their product to make it ashore?

    Anthony Braxton

I listened to this one this morning and it's a joy. T-K-M repertory done Braxton style. The man himself is wonderful on piano, really channeling Tristano but going his own way entirely. The same can be said of the front line, Jackson Moore & Andre Vida; Konitz and Marsh are the touchstones, but the improvisation is quite original. This was recorded during a fallow stretch in Braxton's career but it would've been a "hit" had it been released by a label at the time. You can download here, or just read Anthony's notes: http://tricentricfoundation.org/label/member-downloads/quintet-tristano-1997/
  20. Sorry, I mentioned in the first post that I do have that. I have more Fats than I realized. Still, thanks for the suggestions. I'm gonna look out for that concert with Bird.
  21. I would never be put off by Benny Goodman. He's one of my very favorites. So I do also have his stuff with Fats.
  22. Oh, I have that JATP CD.
  23. I have the Complete Blue Note, the Savoys, and the Milestone CD with Tadd Dameron. Anything else that doesn't verge into abject completism? (ie indecipherable airchecks, cuts where he plays an 8-bar solo, etc) Also have his Prestige session.

    Anthony Braxton

A real treat coming out on New Braxton House/Tri-Centric tomorrow: a double album of Lennie Tristano music recorded in studio in 1997 with Braxton on piano.
  25. Really looking forward to that Ran Blake. I wonder if it's a rare ensemble recording from Mr Blake? I really hope he skips over that Matthew Shipp. It's a fine record indeed but can easily be had for less than $5 on the used market in either its hatOLOGY or original Brinkman edition. If I had to speculate based on past releases, we'll see the new dates come quickly; as for the older sessions I think MORNING JOY and DORTMUND will be along pretty soon, as well as the Dreyblatt, Shipp and Doran. TOPOLOGY, 8+3 TRISTANO and A WHITE LINE are probable in the next year maybe.. I don't see GARDEN, WILLISAU, or SANTA CRUZ coming anytime soon, or ever. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Of course he's also been known to drop titles out of nowhere, like COMIN' ON last year. If you can't tell I spend entirely too much time and energy on this label
