  1. The original Tentet 3xCD on Okkadisk is back in print, $33 ppd from the label.
  2. I have been on a huge Fred Anderson kick lately. One thing I've always wondered is if his music contains any written material, or if it's entirely improvised. It sure sounds like the latter, but I can't be sure. The notes I've read from several albums don't really speak to this, nor does anything else I've read on him. I'm sure Chuck knows the answer; anyone else?
  3. 60s and 90s, no question.
  4. Certainly is. My friend runs one of the top tape labels going now (Night People), and there are many others, mostly in the psych/noise/improv/whathaveyou world. Seems like he does pretty well, saleswise.
  5. Ordered the trio CD today. No turntable, so no LP. I agree that his first four on Aerophonic were really good. Got both of these yesterday. Great stuff on first listen. The duo with Marhaug is heavy.
  6. One of my more coveted records. Hard to get ahold of and very, very good.
  7. He also just cut one with Joe Morris & Mike Pride.
  8. remember a similar sentiment when listening to his other Soulnote outing "Motion/Stllness" what now seems like ages ago....... Haven't heard this one, but the early ones don't look particularly appealing. His more ambitious 90s/00s work suits me much better. I think the writing on this LP isn't too strong, the playing's good. What would you suggest of the later ones? The Mystery of Compassion on Soul Note may be his masterpiece. Swimming and Second Communion on Omnitone are also fantastic.

  10. Tough! Without thinking too too much: Out to Lunch! The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady Complete Communion Spirits Rejoice Black Fire Nefertiti Can't do any less than that. Geez, though, this is almost dumb it's so hard. Glad to see Iyer give some love to Smokestack. And interesting to see Dan Morgenstern mention The Space Book (though I like Freedom Book much more).

Always happy to follow a recommendation like that - especially knowing how highly you rate AB, colinmce Just snaffled a second hand copy off amazon.uk for £10. Still another one available I got rid of mine years ago, I thought it was pretty silly, but I don't remember any of it now. Not as bad as 100-CD "standards" sets on Leo that would follow (which killed remainders of interest I had in Braxton), in any case. This reminds me that I still have a lot of Braxton I doubt I will ever listen to. Anybody's interested in Solo NYC (2002) on Parallactic, for example? Send me a PM. Having trouble sending you a PM, but if the CD is available, I'm interested.

There is currently a copy of the Gillmor at DG.
  13. Three reasonably priced copies here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xtapscott+dark+tree&_nkw=tapscott+dark+tree&_sacat=0&_from=R40 A real shame that distribution for this title is not better, because I'm fairly certain the 2009 edition is still in print. Great record, I'm a big fan. "Skylark" is gorgeous. The opening "Rosetta" is one of my favorite AB performances. Played straight on soprano until the end where he shreds the tune to ribbons.
  15. I guess I'm a masochist! I need to know even if it hurts.
  16. I want to hurt that person on Ebay. They are practically spammers. They've been clogging up avant jazz CD listings for YEARS now. Ridiculous.
  17. I would say that it's come to where I expect that. But to be fair to DG, you're competing with the whole world for one record, so I get it's not perfect. But it bothers me, too, sure.
  18. Just recently, I've noticed that once a title is purchased its price disappears. I find this to be pretty bothersome, as it's nice to at least get an idea of what they were asking for something even if it was sold. Additionally, let's just say the majority of the main 'Jazz' page is without prices at the moment. I know it takes a little time for them to clear sold items sometimes, but I think it's a little odd. Anyone else peeved by this?
  19. I've heard most of these and find his 90s ensemble music to be some of his very best. I'd grab a few if I had the coin to spare.

Agreed-- has to be somewhere in the middle. I don't think Braxton is a lightweight in that area, but David is right that whoever wrote that pulled it right out of their ass. Huge music writing pet peeve of mine.
  21. Rightly so. Steve, I'll let it go. Thanks for the reply.
  22. Curious as to where you're coming from here.
  23. Ran Blake, Roscoe Mitchell, Billy Bang and Andrew Hill should be no-brainers. A Lindberg or Bergman would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. Ubu could've also added Steve Lacy Groups (Trickles, Troubles, The Condor, Vespers, Revenue, The Cry 1+2)
