No, that's quite valid.

You're right, I can't be sure what the real story is until there is more info. It's all very tricky over there, the way they mix business with legit and bootleg labels alike. My fingers are crossed on this one .... I'll try to provide a link when one comes up.

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
colinmce replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Zeitlin is definitely one of the best Selects. If you do happen to miss out, all the albums are easy to find on vinyl, and two of three are on CD. However, the Select has a lot of exclusive material that is just as high-level as the LPs. -
The label is a new one called Elemental. It's Spanish, but part of a legit distro called Distrijazz that moves ECM, Tzadik, Clean Feed, Hat, et al.

Yep. After a long week waiting and goddamn no-good, no-mail-ass President's Day, all 3 of my pendings showed up on Tuesday.

This spring a 2xCD set containing two 1965 concerts by Jimmy Giuffre will be released. Concert 1 is from Judson Hall 9/3/65 with Richard Davis & Joe Chambers. Concert 2 is from Columbia University 5/19/65 with Don Friedmann, Chambers, & Barre Phillips. Not sure on the label or exact release date. I got this info from an Instagram post by Fully Altered Media and will try to link the photo of the CD later. This is terribly exciting news.

I'll take one! I'll admit I don't love the saxophone quartet format, and like sax duos here and there. But for some reason a sax trio sounds just right.

There's footage from "the connection" and a short B&W clip that looks to be from the late 50s or early 60s as well Ah yes, how could I forget that. Though, I suppose that Connection footage is easy enough to find outside of this doc.
-
I might be wrong, but I recall most of the footage being contemporaneous to the film, which is to say mid-70s. If there was archival, I'd guess it was from no earlier than 1966-67. But Jackie comes across just as loud and clear as ever. Indeed a powerful document.

I'm going to bump this one nearly a decade later since there's always much to discuss with KV and the off-shoot discussion in the Listening thread instantly pulled together opinions on 4 different projects. I'm, of course, a big fan of what he does. I think he's a perfectly strong player, but a truly great bandleader, organizer, and composer. His work in the last several years with Polish players has been one of the more exciting developments in the music of late. I keep up with what he's doing and try to grab a little bit of each thing when I can. Like I said, I've currently been digging the Made to Break group with Devin Hoff (electric bass), Tim Daisy (drums), and Christof Kurzmann (electronics). They have a CD and LP on clean feed and a new one coming on Trost which I suspect will be their strongest work to date. Really looking forward to picking up the new Resonance Ensemble 2xCD soon, as their last one (What Country Is This?) is among the finest albums I've heard in many years. He also recently released a great duo with Agusti Fernandez on the digital label Discordian that's worth checking out.

. Great introduction to Ran's world. Also one of his fiestiest sessions.

Evans is a hell of a lot of fun with Mary Halvorson & Weasel Walter.

Surprised to hear people hate it so much. I think it's an enjoyable piece. Is what it is.

Well, Wednesday I spied a SME disc at a nice price. Checked yesterday and it was gone! The same seller has Moholo/Bailey - Village Life at a nice price...considering that one if it sticks around. (Anyone have an opinion on it?)

I also agree totally. On a good day, In Europe is my favorite Miles album. The introduction of the band >>> "Autumn Leaves" is one of the most thrilling things I have ever heard. And not to go too far in the other direction, but I'm not terribly enthusiastic about the Philharmonic albums, either. Very strong, of course, but I'm least likely to pick one of those up when I want to hear that band.

Irabagon/Helias/Altschul - It Takes All Kinds (Jazzwerkstatt)

This looks cool.

Anybody know anything about James Brandon Lewis? http://www.dustygroove.com/item/685545 I would normally dismiss it given the label, cover, etc. but the presence of William Parker & Gerald Cleaver has me intrigued.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
colinmce replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Mulligan/Baker is the only one that looks that way, on all copies. Never understood why, but it was in the very first release batch with the Monk & Ammons/Lewis in 1983 so maybe they hadn't yet finalized the look, as it were. -
Import Cds - the online retailer - what do you guys think of them?
colinmce replied to skeith's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Never ordered from them myself, but fwiw I've found that similar operations like MovieMars and Grooves Inc have a tendency to list items they certainly don't have in stock. I get the feeling they program their listings from some sort of shared preset database or something. -
Some new stuff from Emanem coming up, including a 2xCD reissue combining the Carter-Bradford duets, some Isrka 1903 & Lacy's Avignon & After 2 with all unreleased material. Martin Davidson is also now selling Emanem & psi titles through Amazon.

Haven't heard that one, but he plays pretty well on Tim Berne's Mostly Hemphill.
-
He's an odd duck. He wrote the notes to Jimmy Lyons' Give It Up on Soul Note (1985, in the eye of the Wynton hurricane) and praised him as the great post-Bird altoist. When he's not praising Lyons via Bird, he's talking a blanket of shit on free jazz and ignores the other musicians completely.

Synergy! I just ordered this today after it popped into my mind last night. $5.50.

Death of the iPod (Everyone's buying vinyl)
colinmce replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Audio Talk
I have never been able to get over how tedious it is to load albums onto one of these things. Best I managed was a small $30 type of thing that held about 50 albums. It took me hours to load it up and I never bothered with it again. That said, I do use my phone to stream music on Spotify very occasionally.
