The way I see it, you can go elsewhere for fire and intensity. Not every player has to bring that. I appreciate her music for what it is (though I don't mean to discount your alls impression of her playing...subjectivity rules the day) If you want to hear Tom Rainey absolutely burn the house down, listen to Tim Berne's The Shell Game.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
colinmce replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Please do tell. -
My wife will be out of town when they're in New Orleans, so that's a no-go .... sure would've liked to try. I'm always glad to see jazz musicians take a chance on a punk rock-style tour like this. I wish more did.

Record Store Day BN Treat, BN1 and BN2 reissue!
colinmce replied to brownie's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I simply fail to see what makes these different from anything. Some of these titles have been done on HQ CD by Acoustic Sounds and EMI Japan and vinyl by Music Matters, Heavenly Sweetness, and (yes, I know) Scorpio in just the last 3 years. I bet these run close to $30 and offer what exactly beyond what exists? Unless you really want to drop real $$ on a a Stefon Harris album you could get on CD for 50 cents.... -

I don't think there's an emoticon to express just how far back my eyes are rolling. This is getting comical. -

Kevin Whitehead did a very nice, very poignant review of Wess' last album for NPR: http://www.npr.org/2014/02/11/275265524/in-session-frank-wess-magic-201-offers-one-last-lesson

Hm, I might be inclined to agree, though I like Goldberg rather than love him. The Waits group might throw off more sparks.

FWIW it is available as a download from Amazon for about 6 bucks. I might go that route even though I'm not really a downloading type.

Been looking around for this one since it was posted in this thread a year and a half ago. Still never found anything less than ~$40

Rejoice, Leeway, for part 2 of the Roscoe Mitchell/Craig Taborn/Kikanju Baku sessions are out in April. Also some nice ones from No Business coming up: Max Johnson/Laubrock/Maneri/Fujiwara, Rodrigo Amado Trio w/ Peter Evans & Ajamian/Malaby/Mazurek/Chad Taylor

Marvellous I've wondered about this one . I've had mixed experience of No Business pressings . How's this one? No complaints here. Except the price ....

On again, though this portion of the site has crashed both times I tried to load up my cart.

Yep. Someone recently reproduced a quote from Lacy here about how they didn't really gel. Which is not surprising to me at all.
-
No, that's quite valid.
-
You're right, I can't be sure what the real story is until there is more info. It's all very tricky over there, the way they mix business with legit and bootleg labels alike. My fingers are crossed on this one .... I'll try to provide a link when one comes up.

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
colinmce replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Zeitlin is definitely one of the best Selects. If you do happen to miss out, all the albums are easy to find on vinyl, and two of three are on CD. However, the Select has a lot of exclusive material that is just as high-level as the LPs. -
The label is a new one called Elemental. It's Spanish, but part of a legit distro called Distrijazz that moves ECM, Tzadik, Clean Feed, Hat, et al.

Yep. After a long week waiting and goddamn no-good, no-mail-ass President's Day, all 3 of my pendings showed up on Tuesday.

This spring a 2xCD set containing two 1965 concerts by Jimmy Giuffre will be released. Concert 1 is from Judson Hall 9/3/65 with Richard Davis & Joe Chambers. Concert 2 is from Columbia University 5/19/65 with Don Friedmann, Chambers, & Barre Phillips. Not sure on the label or exact release date. I got this info from an Instagram post by Fully Altered Media and will try to link the photo of the CD later. This is terribly exciting news.

I'll take one! I'll admit I don't love the saxophone quartet format, and like sax duos here and there. But for some reason a sax trio sounds just right.

There's footage from "the connection" and a short B&W clip that looks to be from the late 50s or early 60s as well Ah yes, how could I forget that. Though, I suppose that Connection footage is easy enough to find outside of this doc.
