  1. Does anyone have an inside scoop on if/when this is coming out on DVD? The website (http://www.mynameisalbertayler.com) has not been updated in ages. Has anyone seen it?
  2. I am happy to announce that today I finally received one of the CDs I had ordered on the 26th of September, marking the delivery time as 80 days from Washington State to Toronto, Canada. The other CD was refunded. Wow.
  3. Speaking of CD-r's, I've always noticed Downtown Music Gallery's catalog includes a few CD-r copies of OOP LPs that have never made it to CD (search for Noah Howard or Archie Shepp if you like). Am I being naive in thinking that they are approved by the artists/sending them a chunk of the money? I probably am, aren't I?
  4. Why did I add your photo to my profile? Because you seem to have a hard-on for looking at my profile. Why? Don't you know that every time you look at my profile, it logs it on the right-hand side of the page? I caught you, baby! Are you hoping you'll one day find a pic of me looking dapper with a top-hat and monocle? And if you've got such a beef with member's links, here's a bright idea: CONTACT THE MEMBER YOU HAVE BEEF WITH. It strikes me that that behavior would be the mature thing do, no? Don't worry, if you ever make a cool music blog, I'll give you a shout out too.
  5. Okay, jeez, I know what 'robviti's perceived problem was now: he thought I was endorsing file-trading/illegal music downloads! As someone who does not own a single 'burned' cd, or an iPod, or any mp3's (or mp1's or mp2's for that matter), I can assure everyone that I am on the straight and narrow, and that they needn't report me for un-American activities of any sort to the F.B.I. Sorry this EUREKA moment came about a month too late, but I have been swamped with work and school, and I just figured he didn't like me because I am member 1884745764 to this fine internet message-board.
  6. Marty Paich's 'I Get A Boot Out of You'. Tried to upload a photo, smallest one I could find was 7 kb over size allowance!
  7. Just saw this reply as I came in here to update the situation. If anyone is wondering why 'robviti' wrote the above, it's because about a month ago, I posted a thank you thread that praised a board member's blog for it's South-African jazz content. For reasons only know to him, 'robviti' took great offense to my posting this link (even though the blog maintainer and Organissimo poster posts a link to his blog in his signature). Because I didn't really want an Organissimo member having a heart attack/stroke due to my internet posts, I deleted the post content (I should have left it there in hindsight), as I couldn't delete the thread entirely. On to the Jazz Loft - Alan Lawrence sent me this just today (1 December 2008). Original order was placed 26 September 2008. "Peter, Believe it or now, I just got back the two CDs we sent you. It appears our system, for some reason, left off your apartment number. I don’t know if you still want these but I thought I’d give you first shot at them before I resold them. 8. Are we sure Mosaic doesn't include original covers and liner notes due to copyright issues? I'm assuming licensing the tapes from Blue Note and securing licensing from the estate of Reid Miles, etc. for the images/liner notes are two different things.
  9. Just about to give that one a spin ! I have "Babs Gonzales'" "autobiography" in "paperback" form. It is utterly "painful" to read as he puts "quotation marks" around every "person", "place" or "thing".
  10. I never suggested that everyone on this planet speaks English. The buyer is new to eBay, and perhaps didn't even mean to contain his sale to Germany. I've been selling on eBay since 2000, and I've had to edit plenty of posts because I messed up the shipping/payment options. We're trying to help the man find an obscure box here, Mr. J.A.W., and it doesn't do any harm to ask the seller any questions.
  11. So, will they ship outside of Germany? No harm in asking! Also, you can probably do a bank transfer by getting their account info and going to your branch and explaining what you want to do.
  12. I found a set being offered on www.ebay.de (eBay Germany), but you may have to ask the seller if he/she will ship internationally. Sitting at 60 Euros with no bids, so it looks promising! Link to auction --> http://tinyurl.com/6l95fj
  13. Weren't you the one bugging Cuscuna about a Norah Jones Mosaic box?
  14. You mean the long-box format? They also did a Dexter Gordon box in that shape, a six-disc set of his 1960s Blue Note years. I owned it a few years back, but once I had all the single RVGs too, I figured, why not sell the box on eBay and let someone else enjoy it? A day after I listed it, someone named Maxine e-mailed me, asking me if I could end the auction early. Seemed the copies she had owned had grown feet and walked out of her apartment. It turned out to be Maxine Gordon. I was more than happy to end the auction for Dexter's widow, but I had one condition: I didn't want any money for it. Instead, was it possible that she could send me something sort of memento of Dexter's, no matter how tiny or insignificant? And that's how I ended up with one of Dexter's Rico reeds, and a letter of authenticity from Maxine herself. Considering he's my absolute favorite tenor player, I thought I made out all right!
  15. I don't mind the Christian box, but the Monk one with the rubber spindles was a drag. The Parker Savoy/Dial box is my least favorite, especially since disc 4 ran 10% too fast (common problem), and I had to send off for a replacement disc. Musically, though, who can complain?!
  16. It should be noted that I rarely play more than one side of something before listening to something else. Joe Gordon - Lookin' Good! (Contemporary - 1970s Pre-OJC pressing) Rocky Boyd Quintet - Ease It (Jazztime - Japanese pressing) Stan Getz - Stan Getz In Stockholm (Verve - Japanese pressing) Paul Desmond - s/t (Artists House) Cecil McBee Sextet - Compassion (Inner City) Dollar Brand - The Journey (Chiaroscuro)
  17. Alan, I just hate stories without endings. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I am just curious as to why you have done what you have done. Why did you not just refund my payment immediately after you realized you could not fill my order? Why did you pretend that the discs were sent back to you as ‘undeliverable’? Did you think that I would be more likely to shop with you again if you passed the blame to the mail system? Why do you, without ever having met me, assume that I am so stupid that I would believe that the discs have been ‘lost’ after you shipped them the second time? Perhaps you could try to fool people who buy Billboard Top 40 stuff with these stories, but why try it with someone ordering Anthony Braxton discs? I mean, I’m by no means a genius, but I’d like to think I’m smart enough to know when I’m being taken for a ride. What gives? Can you please give me my PayPal refund already? I sent you this money on the 26th of September. It is now November 7th. The jig is up. I’m not angry, just very, very, confused. Peter
  18. 'Fearless Leader' and 'Interplay' are essential. The sound is gorgeous, and they may be the most enjoyable liner notes I've read.
  19. OK, today I received 15 BYG/Actuel titles on LP in the mail. I specifically ordered all '180-gram' pressings this round, just because. I unwrapped each record immediately to check for any pressing flaws, or other damage. Everything looks great. No warped or scratched albums, and only 3 of the 15 had little hairs on vinyl sticking out from the outer lip. No big deal at all. If anything, I would say that the weight of all of these '180-gram' pressings varies considerably. Some are a lot lighter than the rest, and some are quite heavier than others. Listening to Art Ensemble Of Chicago's 'A.A.C.M. Great Black Music To Our Folks' as I type this, and although parts of it sound a bit bright, it's completely enjoyable. Dead-quiet vinyl too. EDIT: Hmmmm...the last 20 seconds of the Art Ensemble disc went all distorted on side two. The opening 15 seconds of Don Cherry's 'Mu' is distorted in the left channel, but then clears up for the rest of the side. Probably not worth returning these for an exchange.
  20. Sound is fantastic, but the packaging states the album name as 'Sonny's Crip'! I would have taken Sonny for a Blood...
  21. I have been waiting over a month from 2 cds to get to Toronto from Jazz Loft (www.jazzloft.com). Has anyone else had bad experiences? I opened a PayPal dispute a week ago, and then they claimed the discs had been returned to them 'undeliverable'. I have never had any mail 'undeliverable' to me. I live in a clearly marked apartment in the largest city in Canada, not on some dirt road in northern Alaska. They claim to have re-sent it, but I have a feeling I'll have to go through with the claim. I should have asked them to resend it along with the original packaging postmarked September 26th and stamped 'undeliverable'. In response to the PayPal claim, they posted a 'customs number'. Not a tracking number, but just some random number that basically lets UPS know, 'we have a parcel to send out with you guys'. Obviously I'm through with Jazz Loft, but am I alone in being screwed?
  22. Thanks for the links! I didn't even consider popping 'dreams' into the search engine. Glad to see I'm not alone though.
  23. You presume an awful lot about someone you don't know. "His kind?" And if the requirement for posting here was that one had "something constructive and meaningful to add" then dare I say there'd be a hell of a lot fewer members here. I don't think there'd be 'a hell of a lot fewer members here' at all. Feel free to PM the board moderators to suggest bannings, I guess?
  24. Clearly people who register solely to link to eBay auctions are more interested in music as commerce. If 'jaybreezie' had something constructive and meaningful to add to any discussion about jazz music he'd say it. His kind simply covet jazz records for 2-5 second 'drum breaks' or other samples that they then nick for their own 'beatz'. Are you truly lamenting the fact that he does not start threads like, 'YO what is the break-beat sample on 50-Cent's new joint - Bob James or Ray Bryant'?
  25. I have a few music/record related dreams. The first two are recurring: In the first dream, I always stop by this elementary or high school to pick up incredibly rare jazz records that would have otherwise been thrown out. They leave them outside of the library for me. The second dream consists of a huge outdoor record show being held either down the street from my childhood home, or a few blocks south. I never seem to score as well in this dream. Last night, I had a new record related dream: my father and I were in Pittsburgh (for some reason), and we went to this record store that had a jazz section comprised entirely of Alan Silva's former collection. There were some great music biographies in there as well. I found one Alan Silva LP on Actuel for $5.49. I only had $5.00, so my pop had to cover the difference! Does anyone else have strange music related dreams?
