  1. I am sampling Clifford Thornton's 'Freedom & Unity' online, and it sound like a straight LP to CD rip. I have a few discs on the Unheard Music Series, but I always thought they were legit re-issues? This Clifford Thornton is making me think twice. So what's the verdict?
  2. The release date for the first six titles has been pushed back to November 17th (on amazon.ca at least, where I plan to get them from). Anyone in the US grab these yet/get a notice of shipment? Oh, and the label releasing these shows up as 'Phantom Sound & Vision'. Huh?
  3. This is incredibly welcome news. As others have mentioned, Horo LPs are really not economically viable to acquire on eBay.
  4. Hiroshi Tanno is a true gentleman whose product is always, always, A+. The only people to come close to his level of service are Chuck Nessa, and the folks at www.ayler.com, who are also a joy to do business with. I will remain a loyal customer of Hiroshi's LP offerings at least!
  5. I guess I'm the only schmuck who has paid full price for all three boxes? I just happened upon this thread now! I guess it evens out though - just snagged a longtime LP want off eBay, Arthur Jones' 'Scorpio' on BYG for $20. Seriously though, these boxes are worth the full admission price. The sound is terrific, and the notes are excellent.
  6. The Cafe Bohemia is still there (in the form of a generic sports bar), but all of the wood and floors appear original. Not a bar, but I love going to the 125th St. brownstone that was the site of Art Kane's 'A Great Day In Harlem' shoot. When I took some photos of it a few visits ago, a cab pulled up and an older, very distinguished society lady got out and ran inside. I felt like telling her how lucky she was to live at an address with such a history, but she probably wouldn't have cared.
  7. http://www.reelrecordings.org/index.html How many own discs from this label? I have about 5 or 6 and think they are just wonderful. Michael King's work on the recent eremite vinyl issue of Sunny Murray's 'Big Chief' is wonderful as well. They are based in a small town in Ontario, Canada, too!
  8. Sorry to hear about this, but I don't seem to have any trouble finding MPS stuff on LP - either the German or the U.S. BASF pressings. The Tchicai is a nice one to have on CD though - got it used for $14 and probably couldn't find one for less than $150 on LP.
  9. What was this originally released as? I don't support Fresh Sounds/Lonehill/RLR etc.
  10. This looks interesting as hell. I am still awaiting the DVD release of 'Sunny's Time Now'. Isn't jazz music just the greatest?
  11. If it's the concert I'm thinking of from the 70's, it has an all-star lineup but is really very underwhelming artistically, much much less than the sum of its parts. grossly underrehearsed and not well thought out, like so many of the things from that period. There is a lot of gold from that era, but also a lot of dross. I heard this one again recently, and it sounded like dross then and sounds like dross now. Save your money. Make sure you have 'The Free Slave' by Brooks, from a couple of years before. That one, originally on Muse and reissued on CD on 32Jazz, is a gem. Thanks for the insight. I will check out 'The Free Slave' first.
  12. According to various blogs, Roy Brooks & The Artistic Truth's 'Ethnic Expressions' is being re-issued by P-Vine on CD and LP sometime in November. Does anyone know how to obtain this one apart from http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/3681620 ? I've never heard it, but it looks amazing. Plus, the re-issue will cost about $2500 less than the original!
  13. What do folks think about that recent Lucky Thompson set on Uptown? Essential?
  14. Does anyone know where I can find a complete, up-to-date list of the Blue Note RVG compact-disc reissue series? I know the official BN site has them, but I need something I can print out in a page or two (not 25) and see what I'm missing. Thanks in advance!
  15. The 85-year-old Rivers is still evolving and currently leads a big-band at Orlando's Disney park. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...ft=1&f=1039
  16. Speaking of misprints in this series, how about Anthony Braxton's 'Dona Lee'? Small nuisances for a fantastic re-issue campaign!
  17. Discs received in fine order. Thanks Adam!
  18. PM with a question regarding: Paul Bley Quintet Barrage ESP Ornette Coleman Town Hall 1962 ESP
  19. Unless anyone else can suggest a contender, this has got to be the most unexpected re-issue of the past 2-3 years. It speaks sadly of the state of the music industry when I read this thread and thought it was a joke.
  20. Amazon MP3 ...only 3 bucks, too! $2.97? Good Lord, maybe it's time to get into the mp3 thing!
  21. well, there are still nessa and futura/marge... Speaking of Futura/Marge, does anyone know if Billy Harper's 'The Awakening' has been released yet? It has been scheduled to come out for some time, and I don't want to wear out my LP!
  22. An absolute giant. His music and legacy will live on forever!
  23. PM regarding: John Coltrane/Archie Shepp - New Thing at Newport (impulse US digipack 2000 edition) - $8 John Coltrane - Kulu Se Mama (impulse US digipack 2000 edition) - $8 Sonny Rollins - Alfie (impulse 1997 digipack issue) - $6 - some adhesive spots on front 7 back from price tag
  24. Nice find. And it is indeed fantastic. Where else can you find prime Satchmo, Jimmy Smith and Tal Farlow on one disk? That Collector's Edition could contain just the single Jimmy Smith track and still be worth getting! What a fantastic reissue series.
