Damn! You guys are FAST!!!

Man, if Mingus were alive today and read my comment about track 6..... well, I'm not even so sure he's not gonna rise up out the grave and come whoop my ass anyway! And catesta posted his guesses before I did. What's this world coming to?
-
Wow! That was a very nice piece, and I'll have to look into Seamus Blake. I like that style and tone. And I am SUCH a sucker for a berimbau!

Trying to beat the disc two deadline, so the usual cluelessness is once again proudly on display! 1. There comes a point where trumpet-tenor front-lines start to sound alike. This one’s no different. The electric bass makes me wanna say early 70’s, maybe that’s Woody Shaw on trumpet. Date was probably led by the piano player, even though his solo’s quite short. Y’alls guess is as good as, probably better than mine! 2. Herbie’s “Riot” to be sure, first guess would be the Davis Quintet. Don’t really know what to add to that. 3. Boy, does this sound familiar. Sounds like a Hutcherson Blue Note, with Andrew Hill on piano. OH wait, I’ve got it backwards: it’s a Hill Blue Note date with Hutch at the vibes. I’ve got it somewhere (it’s gotta be in the Mosaic), so don’t know the exact album, but that’s my guess. I just wish I could remember the tenor player. One thing’s for sure: I’ve gotta dig it out and listen to it again. I’ve a bad habit of forgetting just how good this stuff is! 4. I envy anyone hearing this marvelous combo for the first time courtesy of this BFT. The string of albums made by Grant Green, Larry Young, and Elvin Jones deserve their own Mosaic Select (heck, I don’t care if they are in print, these albums are just that special). 5. That one just seemed to slip by without ever grabbing me to go along for the ride. 6. Pretty much the same as 5. Sounds as if everyone’s trying to wake up from a nap! 7. Oh, now this one sounds even more familiar than track 3! Aaaargh! Let’s see: sounds like Art Taylor at the drums (love his sound; not all that distinguishable, but completely unmistakable and NO ONE keeps as solid a time as A.T.! What a delight!) Alright, that’s Jackie McLean on alto; either it’s because his sound is also completely identifiable, or I’m just a big Jackie Mac nut. So I’m guessing it’s one of his Blue Note dates (has that RVG sound), but I don’t know which one. One I don’t have, Icantellyouthat! 8. Don’t know what my deal is with the slow songs on this disc on this listening go-round, but this one’s not holding my interest either! 9. This sounds like it’s from Duke’s Piano in the Foreground album. Don’t know the song, though. Just sounds like his kind of piano phrasing. Well, wait a sec: that sounds like Blakey at the skins. Aw heck, I don’t know! 10. Ahhhhhh, some good greeeaze! I do believe this is Brother Jack. I think. Don’t know the song, but I bet if I check my “Prestige Years” disc, I’ll find the answer! NO wait! I know! This is from Grantstand! Yeah! It’s that bonus track on that CD! That’s my final answer! Really! 11. Oh I’m gonna kick myself for not knowing this one, especially since I’ve always loved that tail end of the head that goes “daaah-de-daaaah.” Oh where else have I heard this song? Aaaargh! 12. Already made this guess earlier. Still can’t believe I traded this away ages ago. What the heck was I thinking? 13. Sounds like Wayne Shorter. Has to be. Even sounds pretty recent, like maybe it’s from Alegria. Even after 40 plus years, Shorter’s sound is identifiable now as it was when he was a Jazz Messenger! Another good collection! Thanks .:.impossible!

Charles Earland....... well, here's my License To Greeeeaze card back again. Where to start, guys? b3-er, ss1: gimme more good ways to blow my cash!

I know, I hate him; he has more replies than both of our birthday threads combined. I say that we withhold our humor from him until he apologizes. That'll teach HIM, right? Right? (man, the crickets are chirping awfully loud this early in the year, ain't they?) (And you think YOU have trouble being serious!)

Holy cow, I'm glad you said that! I forgot I was supposed to get a copy to Stefan. Sorry Stefan! Old age, what can I say?
-
I thought the title referred to the group not recognizing the guitarists. Which would make sense; hell, they're getting Paul Rodgers to fill Freddie's shoes?
-
Hell, I can't even handle (or understand) Brötzmann. I only read this thread out of curiosity, not having heard the album or having had much interest in it, but I gotta tell y'all: this is one of the funniest threads I've read in a long time! Especially Rachel's post about being a Metheniac and the story of the UNT Prof at the Coleman-Metheny gig!

The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!

Is that the new issue or the Columbia Jazz Masterpiece 2-disc set? -
Will you guys shut UP already?!?!? SHEESH!!! Many thanks for the good wishes, although technically (on this side of the pond anyway) it's still March 1 and the big day isn't actually until March 2. But hey, any excuse to start celebrating early is alright with me. Especially since I still have four years before I hit Jack Benny age. (heh heh)

Wow! That is fascinating! Thanks for that link!

Track 1: I’m with catesta: I’ve walked by this FAR too many times at Barnes & Noble & not picked this up. That will change with my next trip! Track 2: “Monk playing through Walter’s hands.” Yes, I believe he’s nailed it there! Track 6: Oh yeah, DEFINITELY gonna have to get this one! This track was nothing short of mesmerizing! Track 8: Yeah, I was certainly stumped: I would never have guessed this was only recorded in 2000! Track 9: Burrell & vibes! I never knew he made an album like this! ‘nother one I gotta check out! Track 10: That’s really called “the Burton grip?” Wow, learn something new every day! I never knew that was something he pioneered; I coulda swore that four-mallet lpaying had come before him, but what do I know? (Don’t answer that. PLEASE!) I wish RCA would release Anagram on its own; those extra tracks at the end of Funeral (which didn’t impress me much on first listen; guess I oughta check it out from the library and listen again) whet the appetite for the whole thing! Track 11: What’s a waterphone? May not pick up the CD, but this track will definitely go on my ever-expanding “BFT’s Greatest Hits” CD! Track 12: {{{sigh}}} I suppose I’ll never get this stuff. I see other people heap tons o’ praise on these guys (especially Drake and Parker); yet this stuff is just lost in these ears. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Track 13: The comment attributed to Monk playing through Davis’ hands could be rewritten here to read “Duke playing through Monk’s hands!” Of course, I’m just saying that to cover my guess! Well, looks like this BFT’s gonna break me just as previous BFTs have done. And we haven’t even got to disc two! Ohhhhhhhh, my wallet!!!!

Happy first 39th birthday!!!
-
No kidding! If ever someone wanted all the volumes in the Duke Ellington Private Collection series, it looks as though they're all avaiable for $5.99 apiece!
-
Ohhhhhh YEAH!!! Jimmy Smith and Stanley Turrentine, how can you go wrong? The title track is worth the price of admission alone. Admittedly, it's built around the same sweet shuffle beat that made "Back at the Chicken Shack" so greeeazy; however, one can never have enough of a good thing like this! Taken together with Back at the Chicken Shack and Midnight Special, well, a more perfect trifecta may not exist!

Happy birthday, fellow Pisces!!! Many more happy birthdays, and many more great posts as well!
-
Well, just like last year, I let the 23rd of February slip by without mentioning that it's the birthday of a great guy, an insanely (and insane) funny poster and e-mailer, and the man most responsible for introducing me to the wonderful world of Jobim (both the album and the music in general). Happy (very belated AGAIN) birthday, my friend!

After Swank won, did anyone else notice that Annette Bening started clapping hard enough to break a hand, all the while looking to see if the camera was still on her? As she was “clapping,” the look on her face said, “That bitch beat me AGAIN!!!” Wonder if, as soon as the camera was off Bening, she immediately stopped clapping? And then to have to listen to Swank’s interminable speech!

The recent rise of out-in-the-open CDR trading...
Big Al replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
I know I’m a guilty party as well, particularly where the Jimmy Smith Mosaic is concerned. I apologize for that as well, and have since deleted the thread. I’m happy to report that I was able to trade a Mosaic of mine for the Smith Mosaic, so no CDRs were traded or made (except for my own personal enjoyment, of course!) -
my last mosaic purchase for the year? Ha!

I agree with the Mosaic liner notes when they said that Pepper's playing is "slashing, angular." Very much so, and if you dig Mulligan, then Pepper may not be your cup of tea. OTOH, it could just be a matter of time. There was a time when I couldn't stand Joe Henderson, and would've taken Paul Desmond over Joe ANY day of the week. Thank God THAT'S in the past! (Although I still dig Desmond...... a LOT!) -

I think I killed this thread by paying it in reverse!
