GREAT idea Conn!!!! SOMEbody out there has to have realized their gross error in judgement in purchasing those copies of Midnight Special and Back at the Chicken Shack. -

Holy Crap! We missed Jim R’s Birthday!
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well I for one am glad he's an auxiliary Al. Ever since Jim made that scan for Jim that Jim was supposed to make...... it's all so confusing. Oh, and happy early birthday, Alex (in case I forget this December)! -
Yes, Jim R’s birthday was this week, but I can’t remember which day. I know it’s February twenty-something, which is Jim’s approximate age anyway. So Happy Birthday old friend (“old” like I’ve known him a long time, NOT like “he’s older than all of my friends put together!”). My birthday present to you is the same as it’s been for the past three years: a burn of the Max Roach Mosaic, should I ever decide to get my own copy.

Here's another one to spend your hard-earned dollars on: Al Grey's SNAP YOUR FINGERS. At times sounding like the most raucous band this side of Terry Gibbs Dream Band, these guys tear up any place you may happen to play this CD!!!
-
I had it once and it bored me to tears. Long and meandering. But for 5 bucks, that's certainly not a bad price to satisfy yer curiosity. (I just wish it hadn't cost me almost $20 to do the same! )

Yeah, I like that song, too! If for no other reason than because I always think of that girl from The Big Bounce whenever I hear it. Bought a rock CD? Heck, I went to a Weezer concert a summer ago with my daughter and some of her friends and had the time of my life!

Answers!!! I need answers!!! This is killin' me!!!

This is my first real exposure to Johnny Cash; I was fortunate enough to find a copy of Unearthed at the FW Library. After listening to this stuff, not only do I want to get my own copy of the box, but ALL of the American recordings. Listening to these recordings—especially the tracks where he only accompanies himself—transports me to other places, places deep inside the soul. Cash was truly able to take a song, ANY song, and make it his own. And when he sings the song, you KNOW it’s real; whether he’s singing about killing a girl who won’t marry him or expressing remorse for the same deed; whether he’s wrestling with the devil or praying to the Almighty; every word rings true. Thanks for starting this thread. This music moves me like nothing, and I mean NOTHING, I’ve ever heard, and makes me wanna investigate more of Cash’s recorded legacy from here.

The Green set is worth every penny, and may have you scouring in all sorts of directions to pick up the albums from which the tracks come!

Okay, I’m going to venture a few guesses. I’m really enjoying this disc, and yet I figured everyone would’ve figured this stuff out already, but if it’s confounding Sangrey, well then I don’t feel so clueless (no more than normal). So I’m going with first impressions, hoping I can remember all of them (which is the whole point of a BFT anyway): 1. Late-period Duke, something off of the Fantasy era, or heck, maybe even Anatomy of a Murder. But it can’t be that, someone more knowledgeable than me would’ve already picked up on that by now. 2. Rob McConnell & Boss Brass? Only because it sounds like a couple of Christmas tunes he did on another CD I have. 3. Some kinda Gerry Mulligan bag? Maybe a Bob Brookmeyer thing? Love the bass guitar in the left channel, and likeIsaidbefore, I can’t WAIT to find out where I can find this!!! 4. Jackie McLean? 5. Pepper Adams? 6. Plas Johnson? 7. Gerry Mulligan? Sure sounds like something he might arrange (BTW, Jeru is my default guess on pretty much any bari player) 8. HAFC™, but I sure dig it! 9. HAFC™, but I sure dig it! Just wish it was longer! I could ride this groove for hours! 10. Oscar Brown Jr.? Haven’t ever heard him, but I always imagined this is what he sounds like. 11. HAFC™, didn’t do much for me. Sounds like a soundtrack interlude or something. 12. HAFC™, but I sure like it! 13. An accordion?!?!?!? Ho-kay!!! NEXT!!! 14. What is this, the Lawrence Welk hour?!?!? Seriously, though, I like the guitar playing on this one. And I take it back: this is actually a nice little tune! Made me go back and re-listen to track 13. 13. (re-listen) Still no clue, but I like it better the second time around. 15. “Little One?” Don’t know who, though. 16. “a Very Good Year?” Sounds recent, though. 17. Nice, but once again, HAFC™! 18. Another soundtrack interlude? 19. Lost interest about the 2-minute mark. 20. Isn’t this the guy who sang on Schoolhouse Rock? Sure like the use of the title of the thread in this song! How’d he think of that? Anyway, nice greeeeazy way to end a fantastic disc!

B, you can close this thread as well(Like I have

Always thought "groper" was Bob Brookmeyer...... -
I'm gonna cheat and read everyone else's answers, simply because I haven't had time to really listen to all of it thoroughly. But I WILL say I hope hope hope HOPE that track 3 is in print!!! Anyway, I'm gonna read the answers and pick it up from there. On first glance, a lot of it sounded a lot the same; but on some of the tracks I've been able to listen to closely, I can hear the subtle differences. And I'm really diggin' it because of that. So, good job Vint!!! Now to see what youse guys have written so far......

I couldn't possibly give less of a shit. Signed, a VERY disgruntled former Rangers fan

Fav Songs Off The Mitchell Set
Big Al replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Fungii Mama!!! Tones for Joan's Bones I could listen to "Togetherness" over and over and never get tired of it! -
Never could get into the Dukes, but I always liked "Vanishing Girl." I love Rag 'n' Bone Buffet. Where else can one find all those great b-sides from the English Settlement era? Re; "Stupidly Happy," perhaps I need to listen to that song when I'm NOT in the company of various XTC haters in my family (all of them). Any comments on the Explode Together set? Man, now THAT'S some weird shit! And speaking of exploding, did I mention the sound on the Caroline version of Black Sea literally expodes outta the speakers? Terry Chambers kicked MAJOR ass all over that record, ESPECIALLY on "Travels in Nihilon," which is a great song anyway! Oh yeah, as long as I'm yammering, the credits on Drums and Wires are just about as funny as the cover of Go2!!!
-
I listened to this at work today, and it only confirms what I think about this album, and in fact, I'm even gonna back off my statement about Spaulding's alto. Still taking some gettin' used to, but at least it sounds good within its context. And Billy Higgins, once again, is THE MAAAAAAAN!!!!

Ellington, Gonsalves & Co. tearing up Newport, 1956 would be good enough for me! EDITed for spelling (whattya expect at 4:30 in the morning?)
