Forgot to mention her lovely playing on the After Glow soundtrack, a disc very much worth seeking out, IMHO!

Twenty One has to be one of the grandest debut albums ever released. And the fact that she more than holds her own against such imposing figures as Carter and Williams belies her tender age! Yes, I do need to check out some of her other work!

AOW (MAR 14 - 20): Horace Silver "Horace-Scope"
Big Al replied to undergroundagent's topic in Album Of The Week
I still haven't had a chance to pick this one up, but I wanna comment on this edition of the Silver Quintet, as I don't think they had it in them to produce anything less than a stellar album! Right now, all I have is Finger Poppin' and Blowin' the Blues Away, and these are two powerhouse albums that are as fiery as anything put out by Silver's former boss in the Jazz Messengers! -
.J. Jackson, One Of MTV's First VJs Dies At Age 62
Big Al replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
He was my favorite of that first crop of VJs. He seemed to be so much more in touch with the music and the musicians. Plus, the man had SOUL! Thanks for the memories, J.J. RIP -

Has anyone seen the picture of McLean & Tolliver on the inside of Right Now!??? Man, what's the deal with Jackie's teeth?!?!?!? Not that it matters; this is probably my favorite McLean date, and I'm so glad it's finally available domestically!

So I'm at the library and looking for a good mystery from my wife when I happened upon the Kinky Friedman collection. Now, I've known about him for years and been tempted to check out his books, but never could bring myself to do it for one reason or another (in the middle of another book, no time, etc). Knowing that a vacation was around the corner, I grabbed the first book I saw, read a few pages, then had to be escorted from the library for laughing so loud. (Well, okay, that didn't REALLY happen; but it could've, and in the minds of some patrons, probably should've!) Anyway, the title in question is Blast from the Past, I'm on page 100-something, have yet to discern a plot, and I couldn't care less because I am laughing my ass off at every other sentence. Since there's no shortage of books by the man, and I'm sure I'm not gonna stop with this one, feel free to pile on with your favorite book of his. (I'm gonig with the assumption that jazzheads are natural Kinky fans).

I've always felt sorry for ol' Lou: having his show stolen from him by Patton & Green gettin' in the pocket & dueling to the death! Green and Patton continuing their duel to the death. They had an ongoing duel spanning several sessions.
-
I caught an episode of last night and laughed my ass off. It featured a game show called "I Know Black People" and a segment about "When 'Keepin' it Real' Gets Out of Hand" (or something like that). I gotta check out that DVD!

I'm glad you saw them and posted about it, because they're playing DFW tomorrow night, and I'm thinking of going ("thinking" because I'm also not the usual concert-goer-type).

Many thanks to all for your suggestions. Jeff Foxworthy... yeah, comedy to y'all; documentary for Texans (stolen from a billboard for King of the Hill; just as true, though) Bob Newhart..... yes! I've got the compilation Something Like This which never fails to send me into conniptions! Cosby.... oh yeah, we'll be taking those with us! "My father never turned the doorknob to get into my bedroom in his life...... PKSSSSHHHHHH!!!!!!" I just wish I wasn't the only one in my family who enjoys the old radio programs, especially Jack Benny. While I'm rolling on the floor, the rest of them are just kinda lookin' at me...... So, tomorrow morning we'll be hitting the road with the aforementioned Cosby tapes, "Stay Fit & Healthy 'til Your Dead" by Dave Barry (read by Arte Johnson), some Garrison Keillor comedy compilation (got the previous two from the library), and "The Collected e-mails of Jim R as Written to Big Al and Read by the Author." (Okay, I made up that last one; it would still have me in stitches)! See y'all in a few daze!

Reminds me of various people I helped move when I was in college..... -
There was a thread on the old BNBB that talked about this; I believe the eventual consensus was that it was actually Larry Young, not John Patton. Someone reported that BJP at one time said, something to the effect of, "Man, how could anyone think that me & Larry sound the same? Of course that's Larry. Breaks my heart that people can't recognize him," or something like that; like he felt that he was getting undeserved credit for Larry's playing. Either way, BJP is still da man!!!!

Yes, yes, YES Younger than Yesterday!!! Very definitely my favorite Byrds album, and the reissue makes it even sweeter with the inclusion of "It Happens Each Day." Pity that didn't make the original LP, as it would've fit nicely alongside gems like "Everybody's Been Burned," "Have You Seen Her Face," and "My Back Pages." Not only that, I also like it that hidden at the end is the instrumental of "Mind Garden." Could these guys play guitar or what? And didn't Chris Hillman come into his own as a songwriter on this album? "Time Between," " Thoughts and Words," the aforementioned "Face," each show musical intelligence and probably the first inklings of the counrty/rock movement that Hillman (with and without the Byrds) would pioneer. Y'ever notice not much gets said about The Notorious Byrd Bros.? I've never understood why. That's like the undiscovered gem of the Byrds catalog, on a par with the Beatles White Album, and as sonically satisfying as anything Brian Wilson put together. It would be a great album if the only track was "Goin' Back," but how about that punchy brass on "Artificial Energy," the time-defying rhythms of "Get to You" and "Dolphin Smile," and the electro-country kick of "Old John Robinson?" I once read a review that likened this album to the Beatles Revolver, and I heartily concur. (Speaking of the Beatles, I hope that if/when they ever get around to giving their catalog the sonic upgrade it richly deserves, they pay attention to how the Byrds catalog was upgraded. This is a perfect example of how to do a reissue series properly. From the photos, to the essays, to the session notes, and most importantly to the overall sound quality. This is how to pay tribute to a band's legacy!) Only recently did I start to appreciate and enjoy Sweetheart of the Rodeo for the wonder it is. Once I got past the absence of the 12-string and the presence of fiddles & banjos, I started to hear a delicate, warm, dare I say "spiritual" album whose sunny qualities reveal themselves more with each listen. And for all the talk about this being a country album, "One Hundred Years from Today" and "Nothing was Delivered" rock harder than anything this side of "Eight Miles High!" Whew! Thanks for starting this thread, Bev. You gots good taste in music. (Doubtless you've heard the Byrds influence on XTC, especially on English Settlement, no?) By the way, just how bad is that reunion album they did in '73?

I'm enjoying this BFT a bunch! Especially track 9; simply beautiful! Track five is exciting, a great stomper! Track 6, the drummer sounds like Tony Williams, no? Aw heck, I'm lovin' this whole thing! Can't wait for the answers, to see how much THIS BFT is gonna cost me! B)

The Man taking all my money...
Big Al replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Holy shit! My employer has a warehouse in Flint, and we have to charge Michigan sales tax to our customers who pick up orders there. I'll never be late on a sales tax filing ever! Seriously, though, that really sucks! I'm sorry for ya! -
Ewwwwwwwwwwwww.......... That was so bad, even Milton Berle wouldn't steal that one! I tell ya, one thing these BFTs has taught me is that I have the most boring mainstream taste in jazz there is. I have yet to have a clue on hardly ANY of the last few BFTs. The bright side, of course, is that there is so much more jazz out there I've yet to discover!

Hmmmm..... now I kinda wished I'd waited, now that I've heard "I'm Coming Virginia" from an album I shoulda gotten YEARS ago, Benny Carter's Jazz Giant. Man, this is ALL good!
